Kirkland, you world-class shit! Oh well. It's not like this should be a surprise. He's been this way from the beginning, but one hopes he'd eventually learn. Nope. Some people are just too damn thick.
This was in danger of being a two star book for a while, but the last few pages rescued it. Coleman's writing has gotten sloppy. Lines from the bad guys are hammed up even more than usual. There are more cliches, some more melodrama, some more inconsistencies. (Is Kirkland 18, 17, or 16? I think he's been all three throughout the course of this series which has been going on for maybe a couple of months at this point. And we can't just say he had a birthday, because the age when it's listed doesn't go in numerical order).
I'm wondering if Coleman had "write a young adult adventure series" on his bucket list, got well into it, then decided he'd had enough and just cranked out the last three books to git-r-done. I hope not, but even if the last two have just as many flaws as this one I'll enjoy reading them. They're easy enough to gloss over. An editor would've come in handy here, but it's still not enough to deter me from finishing this again. I'm still really enjoying the story itself, though this book was a little slower than the others. There wasn't as much action, but I enjoyed the cliffhanger ending.
Escape from lost island series is along the lines of "Lord of the Flies" but without the Devil worshipping. I read this series when I was in Jr. High and recently reread them through interlibrary loan at the library. Well worth the time.
In a nutshell: Evil mutants live on an island that is owned by the military (experiments gone wrong). Plane of young boys get stranded and must try to survive until someone can rescue them or they find a way to escape.
Great set of books I wish the series would be reprinted. Series includes: Stranded! Attack! Mutiny! Discovered! Revenge! and Escape! by Clay Coleman
I remember reading this series as a teenager and thoroughly enjoying them. Great story of a plane crash and what some kids find on an island that was used as a genetic research lab.
