Three plus stars, not 2.5 rounded up like the last book.

First let's discuss the cover. The artist normally does a pretty good job in portraying one scene in the book. He mixed a few things together for the the last one, but is back to a single moment in this one. However, the clothes are all wrong. These boys have been on the islands for a couple of months now. Augie (the boy in the back) is wearing a pair of tattered shorts according to the text. We're not sure what Kirkland is wearing, but I doubt it looked anything like this even before the plane crash. He was one of the detained army brat delinquents who made fun of the main characters because they were preps. This outfit screams preppie, and he looks like he just strolled out of his 11th grade English class instead of taking a couple day trek across a desert and rolling in some mud once he got to the jungle. I wonder who's been doing their laundry? Their threads have got to be pretty rank by now since they had no other clothes. But enough about that.

This book moved a little slower than the others, and it felt like it was filler. Half of it is spent resolving a plot point from the end of the last book, and focused mostly on Kirkland. One thing I did like about it was Kirkland's character development. He's coming around and finally taking responsibility for his own actions, not to mention getting a bit of humility. We'll see how long this lasts.

Here are a couple of nit picks. Kirkland can now open the secret rooms activated by voice command. So can Miles, and I assume just about anyone else. One of the main issues in the early books was that only Len and Dr. Albright could open them. They wouldn't respond to anyone else's voice. If they had, the plot of the third book would have to have gone in a completely different direction.

Apparently there's a button on the wall hidden between some shelves in the lab that locks it down and imprisons the person who hit it until someone else comes along and lets him out. A computerized voice says "You have triggered the emergency locking device. You are now a prisoner until the door is opened from the outside. Have a nice day."

... Why? What a silly trap, although it seems to have worked. But really, why would anyone build such a thing? Maybe they knew the place would be visited by a let's-push-this-button-and-see-what-happens idiot? Perhaps the computer voice lied and there was an override that only the scientists knew? I don't know. All I know is that it helped hold someone so the plot could be furthered when he was released.

This is getting like Gilligan's Island as far as guest stars. The boys are trapped there, but a girl from a neighboring island several miles west shows up, and apparently comes and goes as she pleases. Maybe she'll be helpful in the next book. Only one way to find out, and I'm going to pursue that course of action posthaste. I'm still loving the story itself.

Escape from lost island series is along the lines of "Lord of the Flies" but without the Devil worshipping. I read this series when I was in Jr. High and recently reread them through interlibrary loan at the library. Well worth the time.

In a nutshell: Evil mutants live on an island that is owned by the military (experiments gone wrong). Plane of young boys get stranded and must try to survive until someone can rescue them or they find a way to escape.

Great set of books I wish the series would be reprinted.
Series includes: Stranded! Attack! Mutiny! Discovered! Revenge! and Escape! by Clay Coleman

I remember reading this series as a teenager and thoroughly enjoying them. Great story of a plane crash and what some kids find on an island that was used as a genetic research lab.
