A bit of a sea-change in the series: now we get actual occultists and necromancers, rather than the harmless cunning folk who hitherto have been the witchfinder's victims. The ending feels a bit hurried - shame the ceremony couldn't have been played out a bit more, but then again, James was the kind of pulp writer who could churn out 14 novels a year at his peak, so writing anything longer than the required 40,000 words probably wasn't on the cards.
