Text and photographs survey the great swamps, large and small, of America, from Florida to Hawaii to New England, detailing swamp life, the natural history of each swamp, and their legends and historical significance
Really great photography, but the focus was much more on the history of human interaction with the swamps than I wanted. Also there was a fair amount of misinformation / near misinformation in it (e.g. claiming the ivory billed woodpecker isn't extinct).
This book is incredible. It is not in the least dull. Each chapter details a new swamp with poetic and engaging language. The regional character and folklore of the areas are fascinating. It was truly a surprising gift to read. While some of the more nuanced information may be out dated as it was written in the 1970s, it’s still a very well written and researched work.
