Julie's writing always feels like a modern day classic. I love the attention to historical detail and the purposeful mentions of everyday life detail that only add additional layers to each story. A Winter By the Sea is a story about finding your purpose and realizing that the things we hope and pray for...might not always be the things we truly need.
The On Devonshire Shores series is truly a delight. I love that it forces me to slow down and soak in all the little details of friendship, sisterhood, love, all wrapped up in a cozy seaside setting. This story has a main character focus but still has a great focus on the relationships between the siblings as they navigate this new change in station.
I loved how we were introduced to many wonderful characters to add to the ones we already fell in love with. There is something about the close proximity of these characters that brings a cozy found family feel to every story.
The romance aspect of this book had me turning pages...at one point I was seriously concerned things would not end in my favor BUT the ending pulled through to a truly wonderful finish. The romance is just angsty enough while still being sweet, wholesome and totally worth cheering for. This was one of my favorite aspects of the book.
I cannot wait to see what Julie does with the other sisters storylines because there are a few loose ends id love to see comfortably tied! Im a fan!

The Summers sisters are requested to accommodate three male staff members of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, who have rented Woolbrook Cottage for the winter and live in the neighborhood. However, as they welcome these guests into their seaside home, they discover hidden secrets and the potential for romantic relationships.
The book has beautiful writing that is evident in every scene. The author has put a lot of thought, time, and research into it. The slow-burn romance is well-executed, and the plot moves at the right pace with plenty of conflicts and emotional tension.
I enjoyed the family dynamics and the gradual development of the romantic relationship between the relatable characters. This charming and sweet story had both lighthearted and serious moments that any book lover would adore. The beautiful cozy winter setting, well-rounded cast, and interesting house guests made the story even more enjoyable. I'm looking forward to the next book. If you're a fan of Little Women and well-detailed historical romance, you can't afford to miss this story. Highly recommend it!

“…kissing the man you loved wasn’t poetry. It was better.”
Oh how I loved this story! And how I loved getting to visit with the Summers sisters, their mother, and the eccentric Mr. Gwilt again! There’s a swoony romance brewing, a new batch of guests with layered backstories, further character development and more insight into the sisters themselves, and a sweet (and organically presented) message of faith. But there’s also a very intriguing history that plays out on these pages, and I immensely enjoyed that element as well. Getting to ‘meet’ Prince Edward (the Duke of Kent and Strathearn, King George III’s fourth son) and the unlikely-but-future Queen (as a little baby) helped bring that part of history to life and made me appreciate even more the surprise twists that ended up eventually putting Victoria on the throne.
As with The Sisters of Sea View, Klassen tells the story from alternating third person perspectives, though in A Winter by the Sea we only switch between Emily and Sarah. These transitions are seamlessly done and create the cozy feeling that we readers are curled up on a couch in the parlor watching one sister and then the other. Because of this, I have become deeply invested in Sarah and Emily – and Viola – and care about their struggles and successes, their joys and heartbreaks. (On that note, I am still rooting for the return of a certain swoony Scotsman, and certain events in this story have me hoping for a reunion sooner rather than later.) I really enjoyed the growth I saw in both Sarah and Emily over the course of this story, as well as the shifting family dynamics and the emphasis on trusting God with your future. This is a reminder we all need, regardless of how different – or similar – our circumstances may be from those of the Summers sisters.
And the romance… oh the agony and the bliss! There is a delicious tension of attraction that simmers instantly between Emily and Mr. Thomson – the Duke of Kent’s private secretary who is staying at Sea View while the Royal party winters in Sidmouth. As the novel progresses, we come to see James as the kindest of men, a voracious reader (go ahead and swoon – I know you want to), and a man of faith. Watching his anguish as Emily’s first love returns and wants to make amends… well, you just need to read it for yourself. But trust me, Klassen does a fabulous job of immersing us so completely in this story that your own heart will twist for James and for Emily and for Charles. As a general rule, I don’t like love triangles but this one is written so tenderly that I’m glad I didn’t shy away from reading it. (I say that as though anything could keep me from reading a Julie Klassen book – please!)
Bottom Line: Grab a comfy blanket and your fave hot beverage and settle in by a roaring fire (if only in your imagination) to read A Winter by the Sea – the second book in Julie Klassen’s delightfully character-driven Regency series. You will experience a range of emotions over the course of this sweet story, but you will close the last page with a smile and a lighter heart. You may even learn some history while being thoroughly captivated by Klassen’s engaging writing voice and layered plot. Add in a kind and bookish hero, a plucky and bookish heroine, new friends and old, unexpected twists and turns, compelling characters, a quaint seaside village, and a reminder to lean into God’s wisdom and trust Him with your future… what more could you want? Perfect for fans of Persuasion and Little Women!

A Winter by the Sea - Julie Klassen - 3.5 Stars (Book 2 in the On Devonshire Shores series)
"A Winter by the Sea", the second installment in Julie Klassen's On Devonshire Shores series, proved to be an enjoyable read. We continue our journey with the Summers sisters, primarily following Emily Summers as she pursues her dream of becoming an author. Facing rejecting from a local publisher, she agrees to an intriguing proposing from a charming competitor, leading her into unexpected twists involving a love triangle. Despite my usual aversion to love triangles, this one was well-executed.
This series fully immerses you in the atmospheric setting and you really do feel like you are right there with the "Sisters of Sea View" throughout the story. My only complaints are the books in this series do feel a bit too long for my liking, as I struggle to keep interest at times with the plot. There were also times it felt too slow for me, but I enjoyed this book in the series a bit more than I did book 1, mostly because of the less POVS to keep up with from a personal standpoint.
Emily's character shines in this book, showcasing her passion for writing and her dedication to her family. I loved seeing her process writing the guidebook for Sidmouth too, very interesting. We see a little bit of Sarah's journey but I preferred just following Emily here. She really cares for her family and I think she may be my favorite sister in the group. We also see some of the royal family shown here - that added a fun layer too.
This book really is a very fitting one to read in the Winter time as well as it has some really great descriptions of the Winter season. Maybe because I finished reading Little Women recently is another reason I liked this one a bit more than book 1 because I could certainly see how lovers of Little Women would enjoy this story.
Overall, a good continuation to the series that I think people who love regency-era stories with rich historical settings would enjoy. Thank you to Bethany House for a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is Book Two in the On Devonshire Shores series. It can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading Book One, The Sisters of Sea View. In this installment, the sisters and their mother are excited to find out that the Duke and Duchess of Kent have rented the cottage next door for the winter. The Royals will be accompanied by their young daughter, a girl who will one day be Queen Victoria. Then the sisters learn that three of the lower members of the Royal staff will be lodging at Sea View.
I loved reading about a royal visit and all the preparations, headaches, and prestige involved. Don’t you hate it when the royals use up all the eggs in town? The fun of reading a series set in a hotel, or “Guest House, as they call it, is that new residents move in with each book, so a new cast of characters arrives, blends with the established characters, and shakes things up. Add secrets and romance to this delightful mixture, and this is a winning recipe for a great story. There is also a delightful bookish storyline involving Emily that is sure to please readers. Julie Klassen has such a great talent for creating characters that we care about, and she is a master at weaving in real events from history. This book is no exception. I can’t wait to see what the Summers Sisters do next!

A Winter by the Sea is the second book in the On Devonshire Shores series. Having read the first I eagerly looked forward to reading this one and was not disappointed. I feel as though once again I've gone back in time with the Summers sisters. They have new neighbors for the winter season, the Duke and Duchess of Kent and their daughter--the future Queen Victoria--who rent neighboring Woolbrook Cottage. I enjoyed getting to know the royalty and seeing how they interacted. When the staff they bring with them doesn't all fit in Woolbrook Cottage the male staff will be staying at the seaside house. The characters are so well presented and researched; I enjoyed getting to know them all. So many different personalities, a few are quite the characters. There are not many authors that can write regency romance the way this author can. Each storyline is unique with characters and plots that hold my attention and makes me want to read more. Romance and an intriguing storyline with realistic scenes will have you remembering this story long after you're done. I highly recommend this series and book.

A lovely, meandering story focused on Emily's three loves- two different men and her writing. One suitor she long pined for abandoned her in her family's time of need, only to reappear with renewed hopes. Her new friend lodging at the inn provides a level of support and encouragement of her own dreams that she's never experienced before, but of course there are obstacles to the relationship. Her writing brings her new opportunities as she reaches outside her comfort zone, yet her family is there as her foundation of strength. I enjoyed seeing her character growth, becoming less self-centered as she follows her sisters' examples of selfless service and compassion. We also read in the perspective of older sister Sarah, who has another potential relationship developing, but her main focus is on the inn and her family. Having royals visiting the small community brought a level of excitement and drama, interesting characters, and elements of real history. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

This was a bit of a miss for me. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it, either.
Pros:
❄️As in the first book in the series, I loved the setting and the community that is created.
❄️Our main characters are reminiscent of the Bennett family or the March family, but are also their own entity.
❄️I enjoyed the historical elements with the royal family in this story - what a fun glimpse into the early Queen Victoria's life and that of her parents!
Cons:
❄️There were some aspects that I didn't feel should be in a Christian fiction book, especially in the way they were included, without caveat or caution. One was the fortune teller, and the other was intentional deceit. I won't say anymore because I don't want to spoil anything, but I don't think either of these was handled in a Biblical way in the course of the story.
❄️I wasn't a big fan of the love triangle. Normally, a love triangle doesn't bother me too much, but something about the way this one developed I didn't like.
❄️One aspect of the plot felt really far-fetched to me and involved a meddling female. Meddling females irritate me so much, ESPECIALLY when they are put forth as positive characters. Ugh. Save me from the meddling females!
I am looking forward to the third in the series because I believe we will finally get Claire's story, and I'm really interested in that!

I have been a fan of this author for years and have read nearly all of her books. This is the second book of the On Devonshire Shores series about the Summer sisters and their widowed mother who turn their new family home into a guest house in order to make a living and stay together in the seaside town of Sidmouth. I loved the writing, the characters, the Jane Austen references and the faith elements. Now to wait for book three…

'...while I would not have chosen any of this...nor would I go back and change it'
Julie Klassen has provided such a beautiful escape with this series. From the descriptions that make you feel like you are there, to the setting-where you WISH you were actually there, to the characters that become more like family with each turning page, to the small splash of suspense, and finally to the much anticipated romance.
This book is Emily's story and I had so many feelings about Emily from book one. I absolutely LOVED getting to know her character more. Her tendency to jump in without looking first provided for some nail biting situations, but also the potential to FEEL BIG FEELINGS and the ability to look for the beauty and joy in all things.
I loved that this author adds in so many historical facts and does so much research. Being able to get a glimpse into royal visitors is always fun in any historical novel and Julie captivate every feeling and situation with incredible talent. I also loved the author notes at the end. Never miss any notes that this author provides. The story becomes even better knowing the actual history behind the writing.
The Summers' family dynamic is much like the March family in Little Women. The stories are completely separate, but the vibe of family is everything is very much the same and I am a HUGE fan!
I can't wait to see what comes next in this series and will be highly anticipating book 3!!

A Winter by the Sea by Julie Klassen is a sweet historical romance. Mixed with a little suspense and some very special "royal" visitors.
I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the story, along with the characters first introduced in the first book. I did find this second book a bit slower for me at the time I was reading it. I really enjoyed the parts of seeing Emily work on her writing, in the first book she reminded me a lot of Amy from Little Women but I see a lot of Jo in her too now that we've had Emily's story. I'm excited to see what happens in the next book of the series.

I really enjoyed the parts of seeing Emily work on her writing, in the first book she reminded me a lot of Amy from Little Women but I see a lot of Jo in her too now that we've had Emily's story. I'm excited to see what happens in the next book of the series.

A royal visit from a prince.
Master storyteller Julie Klassen has brought reality into this series by giving an account of a royal visit by baby Victoria and her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, to the Village of Sidmouth. I was fascinated by the details of the visit and the pomp associated with it. Ms. Klassen has woven her characters into the lives of the royals and their entourage in an engaging way. The Summers sisters and their mother are hosting several of the household staff of the Duke.
This book showcases Emily Summers and her aspiration to become an author. I was glad to see Mr. Gwilt from book one, had written a book about Parry the Parrot and that Emily was encouraging him to publish the work.
Ah Emily. She has been pining for Charles, an old friend from back home, who she has not heard from in over a year. However, when James, secretary to the Duke, boards with the Summers at Sea View, Emily takes particular notice. She will have to seek God’s will and search her own heart for answers to her confusing emotions.
This was a sweet, engaging story with many interesting details and some exciting and tragic scenes. Especially helpful was a map of the village.
I am looking forward to book three from this English seaside village in 1819.

Wow. That's all I can say, Julie. You amaze me in your storytelling that gracefully pulls historical events so effortlessly into these Regency-era plots!
Brilliant.
I enjoyed Emily of the Summers sisters as the main female lead in this one. She's fun, bookish, loyal, and so very interesting. I will not talk about ANY other details about this one because.....

I read book 1 and now this book 2 in the series with my book club and enjoyed it thoroughly!

Can I just say how much I adore this series?! Julie Klassen has captured something truly special with the On Devonshire Shores series. I fell in love with the Summers sisters in The Sisters of Sea View and was eagerly anticipating Emily’s story. It was every bit as enjoyable as the first book and made me fall in love with this family all over again. I devoured this delightful, heartfelt romance with nods to both Little Women and Persuasion. There’s even a hint of mystery for those who like a little bit of suspense, leading to an exciting conclusion.
Emily has a writer’s heart and longs to publish a novel. I enjoyed the way the author gave us a glimpse into the real worries and insecurities every writer faces through Emily. She jumps into things full force and I loved that about her. She’s been pining for her old love for a while now and it was fun seeing her have to choose between the past and the future. I loved her choice!
I also loved the new gentlemen who came to stay at their boarding house. Each has his own unique issues and challenges and I enjoyed getting to know them, but especially James. He’s such a talented, swoon worthy gentleman who reads Jane Austen! *sigh*

A very well written novel with lots of interesting historical figures added in!
This is the second book that tells tells the story of Emily with Sarah as a tie in.
I liked this family very much and they've impressed me a lot. A very down to earth family that has fallen on hard times. I've come to admire them for not giving up and becoming closer to each other.
My favorite of course is the setting! I live across the street from the ocean so I can relate to living by the water.
Second favorite thing was the future Queen added in. I was intrigued from the moment her family came into the picture.
There were a few other scenes that I enjoyed too.
I took my time reading this because I wanted to savor it. It was awesome!
I didn't want it to end.
I'm hoping Georgiana gets her story. I have a feeling that she'll end up being my favorite character actually she already is! I love her personality and adventurous spirit. I can't wait to see what Klassen does with her.

There’s something about this author’s writing style that just slowly draws you in and takes you on a journey. I loved this winter filled story of hope and recovery.
I enjoyed Emily’s story a lot. I liked seeing her stretch past her comfort zones and also maintain that strong family bond that she has. Her love for her sisters was beautiful and moving through a love triangle that worked well for me. You always knew where it was heading, but I think the push and pull gave Emily a chance for much needed growth and release from her past.
My only little thing is when the story focused on another sister I lost a little interest. I felt really committed to Emily’s story, but not as much as Sarah’s.
The fictional community is wonderful. It’s got the small town vibes but set in a historical time period. I love how they come together for each other and the subtle faith aspects that round out the themes of the novel. I’m very much looking forward to the next story in this series.

Aside from the love triangle and how hard it was to get a handle on the characters (even though I've read the first book), I really enjoyed A Winter by the Sea. There were many nods to Jane Austen's books, some of which I found very clever and a few I thought were maybe a bit too on-the-nose/unoriginal, but all-in-all this was a very enjoyable slow-paced read. Perfect to curl up with a hot beverage or to read outside in the sun on a lazy afternoon.

First of all, can we talk about the cover?! Just as amazing as the first book in the series.
I have to admit, Julie Klassen has a knack for writing stories with a great ensemble of characters. This story is no exception. This time the Summers ladies are to host some of the staff of the Duke and Dutchess of Kent! What an honor and stress inducing situation!
No surprise that the three staff are all men who are as different as night and day. One makes me squint at him to wonder what in the world he's up to, once gave me (and Emily) heart eyes, and there last had me rolling my eyes on the regular.
Emily, somewhat the "lead" in this story has SO much going on! She hopes to get her first novel published, but she seems to be dashed at every turn. Then, there's the heartbreak she's still dealing with from Charles giving her the cut after her sister Claire runs off a year ago. I couldn't say I was sad that Mr. Thompson started catching her eye. Who can resist a man willing to give the youngest sister, Georgiana fencing lessons?!
I'll admit that I don't very often pay attention to the epigraphs, but with every new chapter, I couldn't wait to read them to have an idea of what might be coming! Be sure to read them as you go.
Sidmouth came alive in this story. I could imaging taking a walk along the esplanade, the cold weather, the sea caves, running into the nanny and princess, etc. I absolutely want to visit this area one day just imagining the characters in this series!

Author Kassel has woven into her story the arrival at Sidmouth of the Duke and Duchess of Kent along with their entourage, including their young daughter Princess Victoria who would later become Queen of England based on true historical events.

In the spirit of such endearing classics as Little Women or Sense & Sensibility featuring a family of warm-hearted sisters living life and finding love, Julie Klassen’s tales of the Summers sisters in their guest house by the sea bring a rich and deeply satisfying reading experience that I highly anticipate.
A Winter by the Sea is the second in the On Devonshire Shores series set in the late Regency era in the seaside resort town of Sidmouth featuring a family of women who were forced to give up their genteel life on a country estate for the semi-genteel life as guesthouse keepers after the father passed on and estate was entailed away.
This is the vibrant and impulsive Emily’s turn to get the focus of the story. I’m not fond of love triangles, but Julie Klassen deftly handled Emily’s need to come to terms with her past and learning the difference between ‘Romance’ like the novels she loves and real abiding love. I loved seeing her blossom as she wrote the area guidebook and worked to get Mr. Gwilt’s stories published. I liked how she ended up showing steadiness and thoughtfulness in the way she handled her feelings for the two men vying for her heart.
Emily’s story is surrounded by the overall story of her family of sisters, their growing circle of friends, the mild suspense plot that came up for them to deal with, and of course the inclusion of the real life historical figures who featured prominently like the Duke of Kent, his family and household for this fateful visit to Sidmouth. Gently-paced, a well-painted backdrop and setting, infused with spiritual and character growth and a sweet slow-burn romance growing in the background, A Winter By the Sea engaged me on more than one level and I reluctantly closed the last page. Don’t hesitate to slip this book/series onto your winter reading pile.

This is the second book in the On Devonshire Shores Series, and it was an absolute delight to return to Sea View and all the characters I came to love in the first book.
It’s a charming story of life in this small village, of the lovable Summers sisters, and a cast of other wonderfully drawn characters.
I love Julie’s style of writing, and the classic and cozy feel of this one had me totally engaged from beginning to end.
If you like books that are well written, character driven, have a sweet romance, with a Little Women vibe and nods to Jane Austen, I think you’ll really enjoy this book. I certainly did!

For me, this book was just.. meh.
This is the second book in the "On Devonshire Shores" series. I really enjoyed the first book, "The Sisters of Sea View", but the same characters in this book felt foreign and distant from the reader and each other compared to the last book.
"A Winter By The Sea" read more like a stiff-toned Regency read than a whimsical seaside historical romance.
I think if these books were a bit shorter, and had more relaxed dialogue instead of as many descriptions of scenery, I think they would read more easily.
If you're a fan of Bridgerton and Downton Abbey (I'm not, nothing personal to those of the fandoms) you might love this book.
Things I didn't like:
-a scene where two characters (a male and a female) are reading on the couch late at night and both accidentally fall asleep. This was just kinda thoughtless and made it look like they might have been..well you know.
-an embarassing scene where a character has a low cut dress and the book mentions her lifted bosom showing when she accidentally happens upon a houseguest. Why would you memtion that? This was awkward, so inappropriate and didn't add anything to the story at all.
I don't think I'll continue with this series, and I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone for two reasons: I personally found it to be rather boring, and those weird scenes.

A Winter by the Sea by Julie Klassen is a historical romance novel with Christian main characters. It is the second book in the series set in Regency Devon, in England.
It follows Emily, one of four sisters in this series, who has set up a guest house in Sidmouth. She has always wanted to marry her childhood friend, but also to publish a book. A royal duke and his family come to stay at Sidmouth and some of their staff move into the guest house.
This is a heartwarming story of romance and family affection. It has a love triangle, but I felt it was justified. I loved revisiting the characters and the place (which is a 30 minute drive from me). I felt at home again from the start of the story and although it is a fairly long book; I wasn’t ready for it to end.
The pace is sedate, but it never felt slow and I never got bored. I liked this one better than the first book. In part, I think that was because I already knew the main characters liked them.
There are some things that I would love to see in the remaining two books in the series, especially in the last Christmas themed book. But I will have to wait a while to continue.

Wintery and wonderful Julie Klassen novel! For some reason, I had a hard time loving the first book in this series after reading The Ivy Hill series (which I adore!). But, after finishing this book, I feel more connected to the Emily, Sarah, Georgiana and their mother and that made me more invested in the story.
I love all of the winter weather details of the clothes, books, cooking and home in this book. Sometimes, I got confused with the characters (there are a lot!), but I think I finally felt familiar with them all by the end.
I'm looking forward to finding out what happens to the Summers sisters in the next couple of novels. All of Julie Klassen books have such a lovely feel about them and I hope to read them all eventually.
Highly recommended if you enjoy historical romance or historical-themed novels about families in England.

This is the second book in the series. I had read the first book only weeks before so the characters were fresh in my mind. Oh my goodness. This book was better than the first. Julie Klassen is like a modern day Jane Austen to me. And this book definitely gives the Jane Austen vibes. A beautiful setting, with great historical figures making their appearance. I also couldn’t predict the outcome of this and I loved that. I was so sad when it ended because I wanted more! I feel like I’m part of the sisters at sea view. I can’t recommend this book enough.

When I heard book two was coming out on my bday I gifted a copy to myself and couldn’t wait to read it. Returning to the sea was like a breath of fresh air and several old friends came back to meet me and welcomed me back.
The Summer Sisters were delightful as always. And held my attention as they went about their daily tasks. A sprinkle of romance, new friends, past lovers and a Duke all held my attention through the whole book.
I always love a book series and I feel I might love book two more than book one but they both are so dear and just perfect.
