This is a pretty good idea, but it just seems like there wasn't enough substantial material to pull it off. There were a couple good chapters here and there (like Thor) but others were just too much of a reach and some even combined several different characters in one just to make enough for a chapter. The author would have been better off taking one substantial character and going into an extended analogy with them (or the X Men, because the X-Men are clearly the most awesome).
