A book like this should be required reading for any couple considering becoming parents. Currently facing a very difficult situation involving horrific repressed abuse of one of our children by a neighbor many years ago, we have experienced a myriad of emotions. We may have handled some situations differently; we certainly would have been more frank in warning all of our children at a very young age about the evils they might face. We now have a better understanding of how and why young children bury difficult memories. And we are wiser in our ability to recognize telling signs of such abuse. In addition, we now know how long and difficult a journey victims of sexual abuse face. The contributors to this book bring a wide variety of backgrounds, education and knowledge of a difficult subject. The book was a thorough composite of many aspects of abuse.

I think this book is out of print, although I have a copy I'm willing to share. It's unique in that it discusses the many facets of abuse from an LDS perspective. It defines different kinds of abuse, but also shares wonderful insights into spiritual healing, both for perpetrators and survivors. I think a lot of LDS people wonder how to honor parents whose actions may not be very honorable. This book deals with difficult topics with empathy, backed by scriptural and doctrinal research. There's even a chapter on how bishops and others can help, and what pitfalls to avoid. Truly a gift to anyone working through these issues.

This book was a life-saving. It takes about different kinds of abuse including Spiritual Abuse. How your relationship with your Heavenly Father can be changed by your relationship with your earthly parents. It explains abuse better and is more helpful in overcoming the long-term effects than any other book I've ever read.
