A well written book for in depth exegesis. The best part of the book might actually be the appendix where the author takes the principles from the book and organizes them into a step-by-step process for exegesis. I do wish he had included more solutions than examples in the interpretive problem chapter. I would also warn readers if you do not have a basic understanding of Greek, much of this book will be difficult if not impossible to read. Still, a great addition to my library

Blomberg and Markley have written an excellent and accessible book for New Testament exegesis. I had this as a textbook and going into the class I had no real training in Greek. Even still, this book was simple enough that I was able to follow their process without ever being as lost as I thought I would be. The authors do not share the same theological background as I do (I am Pentecostal and Armenian, Blomberg is neither). Even still, when one of their many examples pointed to a conclusion I would disagree with, they nearly always acknowledged how and why other theologians could reach a different conclusion. Such humility points to the fact that their primary concern is that the reader discerns for themself how to exegete a text well. I would strongly recommend this as a classroom textbook, but also for anyone who is in any form of ministry that includes Biblical preaching or teaching.

A very helpful, well laid out approach to New Testament exegesis from one who holds to a solid view of the grammatical-historical approach. An easily understood and applicable approach to textual criticism and many good examples of how to accomplish the steps set forth.

Every Bible student needs a process of exegesis to follow. This one could be an easily developed method that would serve any student well.

This is an excellent and practical primer unpacking ten major steps to take in faithfully exegeting New Testament passages. The authors, one of whom is a renowned evangelical NT biblical scholar, adequately describe each aspect and then proceed to give numerous biblical examples that illustrate with insight the benefit of thoughtfully doing that step in exegesis. They write most of the time as if their readers will have some knowledge of biblical Greek, even rudimentary, but even those who haven’t will profit greatly from this book. And there are a few portions specifically for those without training in Greek. The very end of the book brings together summaries of all ten steps and turns them into a checklist to follow for future exegesis. For anyone looking to become a better exegete of God’s Word, particularly the NT, this is one of the best books I’ve found to turn to for significant aid.

This is an excellent outline for the major components of proper biblical exegesis. It covers: textual criticism, translation and translations, historical-cultural context, literary context, word studies, grammar, interpretive problems, outlining, theology, and application. These book provides excellent advice on navigating through each of those areas to ensure you properly understand scriptures when you study them. It was written with textbook quality in understandable language that the typical minister should be able to understand.

This is a top notch handbook on how to exegete the New Testament.

All of the chapters are accessible and Blomberg and Markley hit all of the major topics in NT exegesis.

They lean Baptist and conservative but the overall approach is centrist and they don’t take any pot shots at the body of Christ in their examples.

I’d highly recommend this work, and I’ll be consulting it as a reference in the future.

This is an excellent book for preachers, teachers, or people who just want to be able to study their Bible beyond the surface of the typical Sunday school class experience. While it does involve some level to technical jargon, it painstakingly explains each concept and term and makes for an excellent resource to either read in its entirety or to pick and choose topics in the study process for which one might need help.

One of two helpful required readings (of this type) for Advanced New Testament Exegesis. We coupled it with Croy's Prima Scriptura.
