New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author, Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Tennessee where she lives, but this all American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, Indiana, and Tennessee. She's married to a retired Army man who now gets to follow her around the country.
What a thrilling addition to the Refuge series! I like the fact that there’s a thread of mystery (who’s the hacker?) that runs through the entire series.
Not sure why but I didn't really care for either Spike or Reese and I thought it odd that most of the action happened at the end of the book, not the beginning. I expected drama there, they were in Columbia, looking for people, instead they found the people and got away pretty cleanly.
I sort of felt sorry for Angelo, but he also reaped what he sowed and sure he was a young punk, but he had a good example in his sister and should have known better.

Reese and Spike. Little sister of a former teammate, but one that he always was attracted to. Full of brains and courage we see her needing help as she looks for her brother. Spike goes to Mexico to find her and help his teammate Woody. Their attraction takes off as they leave Mexico, but while they leave the country the danger follows them back to the Refuge. We see all the other owners of the refuge and the ladies we met in previous stories. The friendship and bonds are clear, as is the goodness of the refuge. Tex is present which makes everything better and the secret helper is still a secret. The roles of family are strong and the emotions all over the place as danger finds Reese. I am more intrigued by the remaining women, Pike and Owl and I loved the mention of Baker! Another great SS read❤️
I thought it had a bit of a slow start. But, oh, my gosh, the climactic action scene was so intense! I could totally visualize the helicopter swooping in and... (I don't want to give away any spoilers). Gus/Spike was such a good man to Reese--I would have fallen in love, too.
Plus, Tex! And, of course, I loved that Baker from Ms. Stoker's SEAL Team Hawaii got a mention. I really like the community of characters that the author has created, and how they cross over into different series.
Ahh this was so freaking cute! Quite possibly my favorite in the series 🥰
~When her brother goes MIA, Reese takes it upon herself to find him. Even if it means going to Columbia. Gus has always admired his former teammates sister so when he finds out she’s on her own looking for him, he goes to her immediately.~
Reese is so sweet but also a force to be reckoned with. The bond she has with her brother is honestly amazing. I love that she drops everything to make sure he’s okay. She doesn’t even think of the consequences, just knows to trust her gut.
Gus is.. just wow, that man. The way he falls for Reese is beautiful but the way he worships her.. my god. 🥵
This has been my favorite series of Susan's so far. This book did not disappoint. While I love all her books, these connect so strongly. I totally love Reese and Gus they are just what each other needed. Thank you for another wonderful book Susan.
Well yip yah, I got the best of both worlds in this book. I so love when susan writes international suspense and I have it along with good times and refuge and angst. The h in this plotline was kick ass and clever..as i always like. But she was also 'real' which made me so comfortable to listen to, all the while I fell for the H even more. I think spike is my favourite alpha in this series. There is lots of edge of your seat stuff, angst, love, friends, steam and loyalty. It's a wonderful trope that Susan writes so cleverly and reverently that my emotions got all jumbled and tumbled as the story unfolds. I saw the trouble brewing and listened nervously as it got closer, wondering if it was going to change course or plummet into chaos. And it did..holy moly. I can't believe an excerpt from Henley's story popped up. So exciting. A superb piece of writing with a fantastic plotline. From badge of honour series to refuge and beyond...Thanks Susan for yet another adrenaline pumped book. So looking forward to Cora
This is one headstrong woman that has spent her life thinking that just because she's plus sized she's not perfect, but to Spike she always has been. When he gets his chance this time it's good to see he takes it, especially as he is exactly who she's been hoping for as well for a long time. She's not afraid to go after what she wants, including trying to find her brother in another unsafe country. But luckily she's not on her own anymore. Another great story n this very interesting series.
Don't get me wrong, she is used to having to be strong with a brother who is Delta, but the mental strength she shows when under pressure will impress you again and again. Spike has always been attracted to Reese, but knew it wasn't fair to pursue her whilst still deployed, but this is their time and he is not wasting his chance to show her how amazing she is. There may be kidnappings, car chases, cartel thugs and food poisonings but none of that can dampen the sparks between them and so we also get love, respect, passion, weddings, girly drunken dinners, heartfelt words and lots of steamy moments too. I love that we get a bonus romance here too with Woody and Bella, another sweet couple who have more than waited their time before finally being able to be together. The guys are amazing and The Refuge needs to be a real place, for so many reasons. But I really love that the guys are not hiding there themselves, they feel the healing power and know the value of it, however, they don't hesitate to take action and 'deploy' again when needed. An amazing series and Tex as always is indispensable.
I love Gus and Reese. I love how she's determined to find her brother and won't be left behind. I love her relationship with her brother. A brothers best friend story is the best, and I love how Woody is all for his best friend and sister being together. Gus is so good for Reese, and Reese is so good for Gus. They are absolutely adorable together.
Okay, I cannot wait for the mystery helper (who I’m positive I know who it is!!!) to be revealed, and see their story unfold. With that out of the way, I really enjoyed Spike and Reese’s story. I love how we never know how the story will unfold, but we always know that something bad will happen, and it will shock us every time. This series doesn’t shy away from the impacts life events have on people, and it didn’t with Spike and Reese. Great story with realistic characters put in extraordinary circumstances, while finding love <3
Truly just devouring this series. I couldn’t put down Gus & Reese’s story. These men are all in and they’re protective and I eat them up every time! I loved Reese’s loyalty and determination, and I loved Gus being on her side. Immediately starting the next book!
This book has me from the start. I loved it. I really cared about the characters, even the one that was kinda the baddy. Per usual Susan wrote another amazing book.
A great third installment! Reese is a woman a lot of people can identify with. She has strong family ties, body issues and a “can do” attitude. Gus was a surprise to me. He is a loner and likes it that way. But yet he runs off after Reese and Woody to a foreign country with his buddy to rescue them. Everyone wants a friend like that! I enjoyed their budding relationship.
The audio is well done! Maxine Mitchell and Teddy Hamilton are a joy to listen to. The one has a special guest of Gregory Salinas and he rounds things out nicely.
I love the Refuge and I’m loving seeing these men fall one by one. I liked that Spike and Reese already knew each other and already had some feelings for each other. This one made me laugh and cry. I knew something was going to happen, but somehow I wasn’t expecting what actually happened. I was on edge for a lot of this book knowing something was coming. So good!
Deserving Reese by Susan Stoker is a fast-paced, standalone, steamy romantic suspense. Reese and Gus’ HEA tale is fun and charming. I absolutely loved it!
I started this book as soon as I had finished the second book! I was very intrigued to read it because of who the main male character was going to be! After reading, I can say that while I enjoyed this book and felt it was a great addition to the series, it’s probably my least favourite so far! It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy the story or anything, but the plot just wasn’t my favourite! I did like it and it only took me a few sittings to read! There was a lot of romance in the plot and I loved the way it developed and it actually took a while for the characters to start a full blown relationship! It allowed for some steamy scenes too! There was also some action and suspense and I would say there was more on this book than there have been in other books, which I loved! The action and suspense added a lot to the plot! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Reese was the main female character, and in this book she just wanted to find her brother! Reese got more than she bargained for, but she tried her best to deal with it and do the right thing! I really liked Reese and she was smart and had done well for herself! She also found herself surrounded by people that loved and appreciated her! Gus ‘Spike’ was the main male character and love interest of Reese! I loved Gus in this book! He was very sweet and he had deep feelings for Reese! He also supported Reese and was there for her when she needed him! He was very protective of her as well! Gus had also been through a lot and this had shaped him into the guy he was and made him care more about those he loved! This book was written from both Reese and Gus’s point of views! I was obviously expecting it to be because the first two books were written this way! I enjoyed this book being written this way because it helped me connect more with both characters and see how they really felt about each other and how they were dealing with the things going on in their lives! It allowed for more things to happen in the plot, which helped as Reese and Gus and didn’t spend every second of the plot together and they went through some situations by themselves! I now can’t wait to read the next book in this series! I know it’s going to focus on a secondary character and this has me even more excited to read it! The next book doesn’t release until November, which is quite a bit of a wait! I know the wait will be worth it and I do still have some series from this author to read while I wait! The cover for this book is also absolutely perfect for it! I love how well it matches the covers for the first two books and it would draw me to the book! The cover model is also the perfect Gus!
Another winning suspense romance from fave author, Susan Stoker!
The Refuge series by Susan Stoker continues with book three, Deserving Reese. The Refuge is a specially designed resort built to provide a place of healing for people, especially military veterans, suffering from PTSD. In book three, Susan Stoker creates an extremely intense story surrounding one of the co-owners of the refuge, Gus "Spike" Fowler and the sister of an old army buddy, Reese Woodall The book begins with a cute meet and almost immediately explodes into an intriguing rescue mission, involving Reese , Gus, and a drug cartel in Columbia. The set-up chapters involve non-stop action that had me reading until late at night, only taking a break to eat or use the restroom! As usual, Susan Stoker took me on a wild ride from New Mexico to Columbia and back again. But that was only the beginning! After narrowly escaping and returning to the Refuge, the growing relationship between Spike and Reese is still threatened by the cartel. However, the threat comes from within the refuge, and no one sees it coming, especially Reese, who sees only good in everyone she meets.
Once again, Susan's understanding of traumatized returning veterans' psyche and the healing process is demonstrated with every word she writes. My notebook is full of highlights of Susan's brilliant mind, poured out in her wordcraft. If I could, I could articulate veterans' needs as she does! We need more refuge resorts!
The characters in the series are believable and relatable. Yet, Spike and Reese are especially memorable. The descriptions of Spike's alpha male personality, his accent, tattoos, and bad boy hotness are enough to make any woman swoon! But, his fierce protectiveness of Reese, his military prowess, and honorable personality were his best features as far as I was concerned. They were the ame traits that attracted me to my own Delta Forces, man!
Despite the circumstances many of Susan Stoker's female characters find themselves in, they are not damsels in distress. Reese was intelligent, independent, and had a lucrative career. Her only flaw may have been to see the good in everybody. She was always caught off guard by evil she never saw approaching her. Her flaw would make her a perfect match for Spike and his mistrust and cynicism. As soulmates, they balance each other. Their chemistry burns up the pages. Susan can make a simple kiss egnite!
If you are looking to be blown out of the water with suspense and tension overload, you must read this series and especially Deserving Reese! The mystery and pageantry are not to be missed.
Another winner in my opinion. I'm a one-click, hold my calls, go without sleep if I have to, super fan of Susan Stoker's books. This one was definitely NOT a disappointment.
We're still following the guys of The Refuge as they find their happily ever afters. First, we met Brick as he realized that the love of his life, Alaska, was always right there in front of him and he just never noticed. Then we met Tonka and our hearts broke for him as we learned what happened to make him the man he is today while Henley fought so hard to help him heal. Now we have Spike. Oh boy, was Spike something to behold.
If you remember the epilogue from Deserving Henley, you'll recall Spike receiving a phone call from a former teammate, Bubba, letting him know that their friend Woody was missing and that Woody's sister Reese was going to Columbia to find him. Spike flies to Kansas City the following day, hoping to stop her from leaving the country in search for her brother, only to find that she's already left. So... suspense from the start of the book. Already, we're relying on Tex to gather intel on where she is and how to get her out. Love it so far...
But, who is Reese? She's a brain - she's smart, curvy, attractive on all the levels that we know Spike is going to drool over even though she doesn't see it in herself. She's an engineer and hasn't had the best luck in the dating department. But guess what... she's had a crush on Spike for years! Perfect right? Now if we can just get her to have a little more faith in him and trust that his ever growing feelings for her are real.
Was it hot? Aside from the fact that literally everything at The Refuge seems to be working against them getting together physically - like, interruptions left and right - the chemistry is smoking hot. The scenes are perfectly spicy without being overkill.
Bottom line - like everything else by Susan Stoker, I dove into this book headfirst and fell in love with Spike. I knew I would. Did I love the book? HECK YES. Do I recommend it? HECK YES. Can I wait for Pipe's story to come out in November? No... I don't know if I'll survive. I have to have it NOW! 😂🤣
Deserving Reese is the third book (#3) in Susan Stoker’s REFUGE series
Gus ‘Spike’ Fowler, former Delta Force, current partner in The Refuge ( a haven for former military personnel suffering PTSD) learns that the sister of a former Delta Force teammate has disappeared. He’s only met the woman a handful of times but when he realises that the smart but naive woman has gone alone to Columbia to track down her brother he vows to do everything in his power to track her down and keep her safe.
Reese Woodall is the type of woman everybody dismisses. A friendly, kind but naive fuller figured woman, Reece is easily taken advantage of. She’s long had a secret crush on her brothers teammate Spike but he’s never shown the slightest interest in her and why would he? The one person she knows truly loves her and will have her back is her brother ‘Woody’’.
When Woody goes off grid whilst visiting his long time girlfriend in Columbia, Reece decides to find him. Unprepared, in a strange country and suffering ‘Montezuma’s revenge’, Reece doesn’t know where to turn next so when Gus Fowler unexpectedly knocks on her hotel room door she is stunned.
The couple work together to find her brother and get him home but things don’t work out quite as they’d hoped and when trouble follows them home they have to fight for the budding relationship they both long for. Betrayal, secrets and plenty of action follows. ————————————
I quite liked this story. There were plenty of twists and turns and some high octane action scenes at the end. It’s an easy read (I read it within 24 hours) and the storyline moves along at pace. ** There is a threat of sexual assault towards the end which may be triggering **
I love Susan Stoker's books. I do. I cannot get enough of them.
That being said, something felt very different in Deserving Reese, and I cannot put my finger on it. Spike (Gus) intrigued me in the previous two Refuge books. I was wondering what woman would capture his attention, and have him going all protective mode. It's not that I'm disappointed in who his love interest was, because I'm not. It's more so the fact that I didn't feel their connection. It just all seemed so sudden. There wasn't really a meet cute per se. So maybe that was it.
Reese was definitely a strong independent woman. I loved that. I appreciated that. I completely understood her body image issues, and her feeling the way that she did. I also loved her connection with her brother, and how she would do anything for him. But at the same time I find it a little odd that she'd just go to Columbia on a whim. That just...I don't know.
I will say that this book felt instalovey, but it was also kind of slow burn. It took a while for Gus and Reese to finally have those steamy moments. These two definitely had a bond though, and I loved to witness that strengthen over the course of the book.
As for the suspense in this book, well it wasn't what I've come to expect from the author. It was, dare I say it, a bit weak. And late to the game. There was missed potential. In my opinion obviously.
Now there was one part of the story that definitely caught my attention, and has my curiosity piqued. And it is similar to the last book when that mysterious character "appeared". Who are they? I have my guess, but I'll have to wait to see when it's revealed within the Refuge series.
All the big swoony feelings and a side of dangerous suspense
I loved, loved Reese and Spike’s best friend’s little sister romantic suspense story. This story was such a rollercoaster ride of suspense and big feelings that it was hard to put down. Spike is a former Delta Forces soldier who got out because of PTSD issues. He now owns The Refuge with six good friends. It is a retreat for people with PTSD. Reese is the little sister of one of his best friends and former teammate, Woody. When Reese travels alone to Columbia in order to locate a missing Woody, Spike and his fellow Refuge owner, Tiny, follow her to try to help which they do but sometimes the trouble comes back. Both Spike and Reese have ignored the attraction between them for years but some things cannot be ignored especially when they’re mixed with dangerous high stress situations. I loved how their relationship developed organically the more time they spent together and their adorkable awkwardness with each other. The ratcheting up of the suspense while waiting for the bad thing to happen was delicious perfection. I was definitely yelling a bit at some of the characters. This book has a little bit of everything just like you would expect from a romantic suspense - sweet moments, strong friendships, steamy times, real life issues, imperfect characters, dangerous high stress situations, evil actors, and so much love. I am really looking forward to reading more of this series and the alpha sexy guys who are so kind, considerate and loving to these strong women.
I just finished this book this morning because I really wanted too finish the book. I absolutely love Susan Stoker books. I get most of my books from the library, kindleunlimited, and interlibrary loans. This is one of the interlibrary loans and my book is now full of sticky notes to share with you. Okay, let's first talk about the amazing characters in this book. I absolutely love Reese. She is this super smart girl who thinks she is too curvy. But because she is book smart there is some common sense goes out the window. Like trying to find her brother in a drug cartel area. Or the fact that she tried a hot dog from a street vendor from a country that she most likely shouldn't dare. I really fell in love with her sense of humor and love how even though she was scared she didn't back down. Also Gus, it's amazing. He's one of those tough guys on the outside but is all gooey in the middle.
I absolutely loved this book and the plot line is suburb. There was this sense of everything is going on in the world but you know that Susan Stoker was going to pull the rug out from under their safety net. Which she did near the end of the book. I really enjoyed the slow build of the romance between the two main characters. You knew from the beginning they had a crush on each other but things just kept coming in between them through the book. Till boom...a smut scene that will make your toes curl. I highly recommend this book and really any of Susan Stoker's books.
Susan Stoker once again delivers a gripping mix of romance and suspense in "Deserving Reese", the third book in The Refuge series. The story kicks off with high stakes as Reese Woodall travels to Colombia to find her missing brother, only to cross paths with Gus "Spike" Fowler, a former Delta Force operative and her long-time crush. Stoker masterfully blends pulse-pounding action with heartfelt emotion as the pair navigate the dangerous mission and the undeniable chemistry between them.
Reese is a refreshing heroine—smart, brave, and fiercely independent—while Spike is the perfect balance of protective and supportive. Their relationship unfolds naturally, fueled by mutual respect and trust forged in the heat of danger. The transition from the perilous jungles of South America to the safety of The Refuge provides a nice contrast, allowing their romance to fully bloom. But just when it seems like they’ve found their happy ending, Stoker raises the tension once more, keeping readers on edge.
Fast-paced, emotionally engaging, and full of romantic tension, "Deserving Reese" is a thrilling read that will leave fans eagerly awaiting the next installment. Perfect for those who love military romances with strong characters and plenty of action.
As this is book 3 in the Refuge series, you will enjoy is more if you have gotten to know the characters prior to this point. However it's not necessary since Spike hasn't been a main focus so far. I love that Reese knows who she is and what she wants, although it is frustrating when she seemingly acts without thinking which is the entire set up of this story. The secondary story involving Reese's brother, Woody, and his girlfriend Isabella helps move the story along. I do wish it didn't seem as though everyone was ignoring the most obvious reason for their predicaments. Military people in books tend to hash out every last possible concern or detail of what is found, so if they don't do that, it can seem obvious to the reader. One of the nice changes to read about was how Reese was always trying to make others comfortable and happy. I can appreciate her positivity and in the end, I hope people can think about that while reading. There are a few up and down moments as there usually are in Stoker books, but it fits with the personalities of the Refuge and am excited to read about Pipe in the next book.
Miles and years separated them but that did not stop them of thinking about the other. Gus 'Spike' Fowler is a man whose time as a Delta still wers on him. He saw too much, killed too many and saved very few. Reese Woodall is so close to her brother, loyal, super smart, lush and curvy. When she rashly takes off for Colombia to find her brother after he fails to check in, she fails to make contingency plans. Finding the man who's filled her night time fantasies on the other side of her hotel door is a shock to say the least, although not an unwelcome one. Getting Reese's brother, soon to bride and her brother out of Colombia is done relatively quickly and easy. Perhaps a little too easily but they're out. Having Reese stay at the Refuge settles Gus like nothing ever has. He wants and needs her by his side. Reese cannot belive that the man she's crushed on for years treats her like gold. How did she get so lucky? The better they get know each other the more they want and need each other. It maybe fast but their commitment is for a lifetime.
Deserving Reese is the third book in "Refuge Series" and is a fantastic addition. I love to read any book by Susan Stoker, she is the best! Reese Woodall who has always had a crush on her brother's best friend, but she is not worried about that because she very seldom sees him. Besides she has a bigger problem, her brother whom she loves more than anything is missing, in Colombia and Reese doesn't think twice about leaving everything behind and making her way to him. Gus "Spike" Fowler learns that his best friend is missing and his sister has gone to find him, and he quickly heads to South America to find them both. He has more important things to tend to than thinking about his attraction to the sexy and stubborn engineer. That includes getting the both of them away from this dangerous drug cartel. Will Spike find his friend and Reese before it is too late? Will they find a way to be together and have a happily ever after? You will have to read it to find out!! Great addition to this series.
