Pokemon Sapphire was my first Pokemon game as a kid. I was having difficulty beating Roxanne in Rustboro so I would just restart the game over and over until I got to the part I couldnt beat. One day my dad came home from work and handed me this book. There I learned that after saving Peeko, Mr. Briney would drive me to Dewport, and the rest is history. I poured over this book for hours on end and it might be one of the most impactful books I have ever read given that without I might not have developed the same interests and hobbies I have today and I may simply be an entirely different person.
This wasn't as awesome as my other Pokemon game guide for Silver and Gold, but it was effective and definitely helped me get through the game. The pokedex info at the back was invaluable, though a bit hard to read.
This book was a core memory for me as a child. It was my Library of Alexandria. My Rosetta Stone. Elizabeth Hollinger’s magnum opus.
I don’t remember a single page of this book. I don’t even think I owned Pokemon Ruby when I bought it. But I do remember the pure unadulterated bliss- a feeling I have been trying to recapture for decades.
Will I find that joy outside the pages of this book? No. Is it 2am while I’m writing this review? Yes.
