One day, I’m just trying to make ends meet as a security guard at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC. Then I happened upon a mysterious pocket watch and ended up in the year 1814. Time traveling takes a little getting used to, but it definitely helped that I found a pretty blonde woman to help me navigate 19th century DC. And when I discovered I could take things from the past and bring them to the future, a very lucrative idea took root in my brain…
Once upon a time, I read Eric Vall's Summoner, Metal Mage and Without Law series and was taken in by the harem fantasy genre. These first 8-10 books were quite a nostalgia for me, unlike the ghostwritten works produced in the last couple years. When I read the synopsis of one of his newer works, I thought that maybe it wouldn't be as bad as I remembered. However, I was mistaken. I found that 50 percent of the book was wasted sentences used only to increase word count, while the other half was so dull and uninspired that I'm not sure how I managed to finish it. The only thing I found mildly redeeming in the book was that the main character had a backbone and wasn't a sniveling manchild like many harem MC's. I also felt unsettled by the lack of consideration for the woman he "dates" in the 1800s - the germs he brings back to the present time will lead to her certain death. All in all, this book was a good reminder of why I stopped reading Eric Vall's books.
I'm intrigued by the concept of using time travel to plunder for valuables in the last that won't upset the timeline... Which also leads into my curiosity as to how Eric Vall will handle the time travel.
But so far it's a blast to read and has a really engaging story with a few twists and unexpected developments. Looking forward to more!
The book was obviously in the incel fantasy genre, I decided to read it because I'm a sucker for time travel. It was bad. The protagonist character has a bit of substance- after failing in education and military service because he is apparently surrounded by assholes, he is working a dead end job as a security guard. Yet he is flirted with by any woman he meets. OK, there are two of them in the book. One is often called "pretty blond woman", another is "pretty dark hair woman". I wish he used "female" instead of "woman" to perfect the incel personality of the protagonist. The time travel is boring. Mostly because all thoughts and logic in the book are at the middle school level. The language is almost as bad as mine, but English is my 3rd language. The author fails in every aspect- the historical scenes lack depth, the history research is a caricature, the time travel paradox is barely acknowledged to exist and disregarded. The scene involving guns is ridiculous even for me, and I'm not much of gun enthusiast. The protagonist manages to draw his gun from the ankle holder and aim it at the opponent with the said opponent already pointing his gun. I even thought I didn't understand how it worked and watched a couple of youtube videos. They confirmed that drawing and aiming the gun would take well over a second, more than enough time to get killed. Then the "highly trained and licensed" protagonist proceeds to violate the MD "brandishing a weapon" law. Everything in the book is like this. Only one thing rises above the high school level- libido of the main characters. Yet he doesn't score until the middle of the story. So it fails even in the incel porn aspect. And the "time piracy" comes into play near the end and is not developed at all. Junk. Wasted time.
The MC Francis is an anti-authoritian working as a security guard at the Smithsonian. He's getting by, but not really moving ahead in life when, at work, he stumbles upon a time-traveling artifact and jumps back 200 years in the past. There he meets Emily and over a few time-jumps develops a relationship with her. Meanwile, back in the present, he's also developing a relationship with Joan, a researcher working on artifacts, but his a-hole boss has it out for him.
It was a quick easy read, but l have to critique the MC's ability to prioritize and focus on the important things first. Since time traveling artifacts don't come along every day, I can't understand how he's got time to watch Netflix when he should be learning everything he can about the time period he has access to. This includes important people and events, customs of the time etc. so that he can prosper in both time-streams without creating paradoxes. He also needs detailed info on portable items from that time which have historic and collectable value in his present. He can also use the time capsule concept to bury items from the past so that they will stand up to modern scientific verification practices such as carbon dating. Meanwhile, his boss is giving him grief and he needs to manage his present timeline's livelihood while figuring out how to leverage his time-traveling ability. I can understand the need for some normalcy, but the mindset of entertaining ones self when a once in a lifetime opportunity is (temporarily) available is anathema to me. as an ambitious person.
Eric Vall has done it again, this time with a time-traveling nobody who bounces back and forth between the War of 1812 and 21st century Washington, DC. Our hero--Francis, aka Frankie, a history buff and security guard at the Smithsonian Institute--discovers a mysterious watch in a newly acquired box of donated historical artifacts. The timepiece allows him to travel back in time, where he meets the lovely Emily in the American capital during the Madison presidency.
Frankie eventually takes Emily to a ball at the Presidential Mansion, the original White House which got burned down by invading British in 1814. So far, Vall has scrupulously avoided taking sides in the War, which will also avoid offending UK book buyers.
All the while a secondary story is taking place in the present time which involves a beautiful reseacher who is stalked by a killer looking for the artifact.
The novel contains a few sexually explicit scenes and is not gor pre-teens. Nevertheless, Time Pirate is well-written and compelling. I am eagerly awaiting TP-2.
I really need to look at genre's a bit more carefully. Throughout, Francis was a total and utter ... douchebag. A womanising, cock-happy jock with seemingly not two brain cells to rub together. if this is how your stereotypical security guard in the US views women I'm amazed the world hasn't yet imploded.
And of course then right at the end of the book the author drops harem, and I'm all ah, yes, now that makes sense. Only didn't DNF because I was captivated by the sheer ludicrous nature of the story, but wouldn't have picked up had I seen the harem bit. I need to read something clean now.
It's not bad, but some parts are just too ridiculous
I can't tell if the MC is smart, or dumb as a box rocks. I mean he literally found a dead researcher, described as old, but when his girl talked about her meeting about a researcher that's old and on holiday but not answering his phone he didn't even put 2 & 2 together... I mean come on! If it was a snake it would've bit him. So, I give this 4 stars because the writing is decent and it keeps you engaged but it doesn't get 5 stars because the author is trying too hard to make the MC oblivious to the point that it makes him seem stupid or dense as lead.
Eric Vall , I hope you are busy writing the next book of this series, and "okay but try not to....
Murder anyone" and "13th floor" etc. As I really want to read all of them to completion. My sole complaint is the brevity of each book and the long wait between them. Oh! One more thing, though be it a common mistake, the correct phrase is " One of a kind" often shortened to "one of" not one off. I don't know who started the of/off debacle but I would like to break their keyboard.
Lot of extra words to make the story longer. Not believable ( even past the fact we are talking about time travel), as the main character seems to think he's smart, but acts stupidly. Just bad editing and plot needs a lot more work. No suspense, or action that you really care about. Found myself skipping dumb filler actions and dialogue. It's a plot that could go somewhere because it's a neat premise. But it was a struggle just to get through this book it just doesn't have a lot to offer.
A quick read that ends each chapter with a dilemma, so you want to read the next one chapter right now. My only real gripe was that on every other page he referred to “the pretty blonde” or “the pretty dark haired woman”. It took me out of the entrancing story. Looking forward to the next four books. Character development was quite good. Pacing was excellent. My first book by this author. Sex aplenty and mild violence. However, brining the unvaccinated girl into the present times a major suspension of disbelief.
So the characters are likable, the story... Like a lot of these don't make much sense. But there is a sex scene... I don't know if this is written by a high schooler but it kind of sounds like. If you read it it should be obvious all the issues with it. He has a time machine but only goes to a single place in time... Why?
It could be much better but it is not a long read so it is ok.
Well, it's not my usual type of story, I'm more into fantasy type tales. I decided to give it a try since it's Eric Vall and as usual I wasn't disappointed. The story is good, and the MC is the type I like. It's not a bumbling idiot because a girl is hot and not a narcissistic idiot who acts like all girls should love him. As with other books of the genre, it stretches the imagination when coming up with explanations for situations. But it's enjoyable.
The book was fun and has some interesting history. I enjoyed reading about the expressions they didn’t exist in 1814. Also the descriptions of DC during that period were colorful. I did notice that 1814 characters said “okay”. A word that didn’t exist until later. Still, still, one of the better books of its type.
Not a bad idea for a good story. But he had better be careful, he's lucky he didn't jump into the middle of a wall. I hope the next book is just as good or better then this one. The idea of going back and getting stuff to sell is the dream of many young men who reads SI FI. Keep up the good work.
I really enjoy time travel stories so this gets a bump from the premise alone. I wish there was more consideration of the plot and the use of the device but the story was fun. MC needed some more depth and the rest of the cast believed the "secret" far too readily. All in all it was an enjoyable read and despite my nit-picks ill try the next one.
It was an interesting start to a new series with an idea I haven’t really seen before, still feels like reverse isekai that’s all the rage these days but done in a different way, can’t wait for the next one
I don’t normally do reviews anymore. That said,I really loved the original thought put into this book. The characters are written well and they mesh well.Hot smart babes and tons of action.
Lots of possible ways to make a million.... or screw everything up, but the possibilities are endless! I'm waiting for the butterfly effect to kick in though
A little short, I would have liked one or two more chapters showing Joan and Emily meeting. This was kind of set-up as the major conflict in the books since the MC is
I really love the time travel genre especially when it's not bogged down with concerns over paradox. This story is just starting so I'm hopeful that it can keep it up.
That was a fun read. I personally cannot wait for the next in this series. Very interesting concept and the read flowed. Unfortunately, to me, the first in this series was entirely too short. Thank you for this adventure.
Very cool new series. I like that not everything in the protagonists' life is immediately solved by discovering time travel. In fact his life becomes a lot more complicated. Cool.story, great action, I can't wait to see wht happens next.
Absolutely fantastic! Loved it from the first chapter till the end. Absolutely recommend. If you enjoyed the movies, you will enjoy this. No it has almost nothing to do with movie, but you will understand once you get into the first story.
I thought this book was decent. I love a good time travel book. But it didn't take too long for it to turn into a porn novel, just not my thing at all.
Time travel and a Smithsonian security guard, researcher, museum curator, and DC detective. Beautiful women and the burning of Washington make a complete first installment.
