Уф, даже и в ескейпизма има нива. Тук истериите и липсата на логика са почти 100% от сюжета. Втората звезда е само заради любимците ми от третата книга, които се срещат тук за първи път - техните няколко страници са единственото, което си струваше.

SERIE NO OTHER vol. 1
Avevo bisogno di un libro romanticoso e la scelta è caduta su questo, che mi faceva gli occhi dolci da parecchio.
La prima pubblicazione è a fine anni 90, quindi stiamo parlando di un libro (serie) scritto più di vent'anni fa. E si sente. Soprattutto all'inizio le descrizioni dei personaggi, e della situazione del luogo: siamo nel vecchio West nel pieno della colonizzazione, dove gli indiani venivano mandati nelle riserve. Abbiamo pertanto cenni storici. Incontriamo Cavallo Pazzo, sentiamo parlare del generale Custer e ci avvinciamo alla cultura sioux durante un soggiorno in un campo indiano. E io ho adorato tutto questo. Mi è davvero, davvero piaciuto. Finalmente un libro che oltre alla storia d'amore ci fa immergere totalmente nel periodo storico in cui si svolge. Sarà anche che io ho un debole per gli indiani ^^ Ci sono anche delle note a piè pagina in cui vengono spiegate battaglie, e altri avvenimenti di cui si parla. Se però non siete avvezze a queste cose, potreste trovarlo un pò noioso.
Inizio scoppiettante, i due protagonisti mi hanno fatto morire dal ridere con i loro battibecchi. Skylar si è sposata per procura con Lord Douglas, ma purtroppo suo marito è morto, così va da sola nel selvaggio West a reclamare la sua posizione di vedova e avente diritto all'eredità.
Appena arriva, viene rapita da degli indiani, ma presto scoprirà che chi l'ha rapita è il vero Lord Douglas..e lei è sposata con lui. Un mezzo sangue. Da qui in poi ne vedremo delle belle.
I personaggi principali mi sono piaciuti. Skylar è una donna forte che ha accettato di sposarsi, senza sapere nulla del suo nuovo marito, per sfuggire ad una situazione pericolosa. Falco, o Andrew Lord Douglas, è figlio di un Lord scozzese, e di una donna sioux. Onesto e orgoglioso è ben voluto da tutti. E la sua missione è cercare un dialogo tra le tribù indiane e i nuovi stati d'america in merito alla suddivisione delle terre.
In questi romanzi siamo abituati ad arrivare quasi subito al sodo, e soprattutto a dei protagonisti che si innamorano nel giro di due secondi. Qui scordatevelo. Anche se il pensiero gli sfiora, prima di ammetterlo ci vuole un bel pò. Forse troppo. Infatti avrei preferito che dopo un certo avvenimento, dopo la metà del libro, ci fosse un pò una resa. Che finalmente i due protagonisti si spiegassero e che litigassero. Così non è stato. E questo mi ha dato un pò fastidio.
E' un libro pieno di avvenimenti e di intrecci, che alla fine si sono sciolti senza troppi pensieri. A parte uno, che è quello che spero scopriremo nel prossimo volume. Dopo tutti i turbamenti, le liti e l'orgoglio dei due protagonisti, ho trovato assurdo che si sistemasse tutto nelle ultime pagine. In questo modo Skylar è diventata ripetitiva che accampava sempre le stesse scuse, ormai diventate inconsistenti, e che ha trascinato il suo segreto anche quando ormai non ce n'era bisogno. E Falco lo ha accettato, dopo tutto quello che gli ha fatto, senza battere ciglio.
Peccato perchè è stato davvero bello.
E' come se alla fine l'autrice avesse affrettato le cose, perché non c'era più spazio per scrivere.
Alcune scene che dovrebbero essere romantiche sono molto crude, sfioriamo anche la violenza. Per cui se siete sensibili, non leggetelo. Potrebbe rovinarvi la lettura.
A parte la delusione un pò verso la fine, questo libro mi è piaciuto e non vedo l'ora di leggere i prossimi.

Di Shannon Drake aka Heather Graham mi ha sempre stupito la grande capacità di saltare da motivi horror-suspense a romance storici con risultati interessanti ogni volta.
Questo è un romanzo del 1995, ad esempio: nella struttura risente un po' del periodo (grande accuratezza nell'ambientazione e nella ricostruzione, con utilizzo persino di note a pie' di pagine per riuscire a rendere il più possibile i fatti dell'epoca, le tradizioni e il vocabolario indiano), a volte risulta un po' troppo insistente nella tensione da sceneggiato drammatico tra i due (in certe scene la violenza di lui, pur giustificata dall'essere un uomo perfettamente calato nel tempo e nella civiltà in cui vive, potrebbe far inorridire le lettrici d'oggi, abituate a uomini bastardi sulla carta ma poi frollini al primo sguardo, oppure agli ormai presenti mafia-men che sono brutali perché lo richiede il ruolo), però è un "malloppone" (380 pagine!!!) di quelli che ti fanno immergere nella trama e ti appassionano.
Lord e lady Douglas non si sono sposati per amore, questo è certo.
Ma devono imparare a convivere e a conoscersi, per mantenere il piccolo mondo di persone che dipende da loro e dalle loro decisioni.
Si vede che la Drake s'è documentata a lungo (anche le luci ed ombre di Custer sono rese bene), prima di individuare due protagonisti così particolari: lui, lord Douglas, ma anche Falco di Tuono, un Sioux Oglala, un trentenne perfettamente in mezzo a due realtà opposte (e piuttosto in bilico sullo scegliere dove schierarsi), ricco, nobile, prigioniero delle tradizioni del mondo civilizzato e delle responsabilità familiari; lei, Skylar, in fuga da un passato di sangue e da un familiare violento, con l'unica speranza di trovare la propria salvezza nel West tormentato dei cacciatori d'oro, dei coloni avidi di terra, dei bisonti portati sull'orlo dell'estinzione e dei pellerossa cacciati, depredati, decimati a furia di aggressioni e di malattie "bianche" (la strage provocata dal vaiolo importato, talora dolosamente, ricorre in molti romanzi simili).
Ne deriva una trama avventurosa, emozionante, ricca di uomini e donne positivi/negativi, e che offre in più un notevole spaccato sui contrasti interni sia al fronte politico statunitense che a quello delle tribù indiane.
Rispetto ad altri romance più leggeri, questo può apparire più denso e impegnativo, ma merita.

2 1/2 stars actually. This wasn't much of a romance and seemed more of an essay on the old west and Native American culture. While I generally enjoy reading history, in this case, I didn't appreciate it taking away from the story which (one may confidently assume) was meant to be a romance. With all the focus on General Custer and the Sioux Indians, the love story between the protagonists suffered and wasn't really convincing at all. And there are other romances of the same genre that are much better written and more compelling. For example: Nicole Jordan's The Savage https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...) which remains one of my favourite American romances, where the struggles of the old west was well highlighted but never once took away from the bond between the h and the H.
Also, I've read much better stuff from this author. This just didn't measure up.

Second time reading and I still absolutely adored it. In fact, it's a 5 star for me. I just wish Sabrina and Sloan get their own story.

I absolutely adored this book. It's fulfilling. It was so satisfying, full of twists and interesting plots.
I simply fell in love with the Hero and heroine. They were at odds with each other right off the bat but that's why I liked this story; there's never a dull moment between these two. H.G. is always keeping us the readers on our toes, never settling, always guessing.
I lived for these types of books.
The only reason I docked a star off was because I was hoping for more angst (there's a lot! but I'm a sucker for angsty stuff).
Hawk was ever so gentlemanly and sexy and hot, whereas Skylar was ever so beautiful and kind. Did I tell you I absolutely dig drop dead gorgeous heroines? It's cliche but truly, they're my favorites.

The outline of this book may fool you, like it did me, into expecting something nail-biting, adventurous and passionate, thirty pages in and it'll be more than clear that you're wasting your time with this awful book. Amateurish writing, inane characters, a TSTL heroine (one of the most TSTL I've ever come across), and constant headache inducing bickering between the two main characters. Why do writers like Shannon Drake think that women like the heroine could ever inspire love? More like a kick up the backside. The hero in his exchanges with other characters sounds like an interesting human being, but give him five seconds in the vicinity of the heroine and he turns into an insufferable, zero-dimensional clod. I love me a priapic guy as much as the next reader, but pin some character on that penis, please. Avoid, avoid.

Una lettura molto scorrevole e coinvolgente, molto realistica e dettagliata per quanto riguarda l’ambientazione storica di cui tratta il libro.
All’inizio della storia le opinioni contrastanti tra Falco e Skylar mi hanno divertito parecchio ma con il procedere della lettura diventano un po' ripetitive soprattutto per quanto riguarda Skylar e il nascondere il suo passato a suo marito.
Oltre a questo mi è piaciuto conoscere, anche se in modo superficiale, gli altri personaggi che ruotano intorno ai nostri protagonisti specialmente Sloan e Sabrina che ho trovato molto accattivante e divertente (lui) e intrigante e misteriosa (lei).
In conclusione una buona lettura a cui non do il massimo per ripetitività delle situazioni come ho scritto prima.

I would have enjoyed this book more without some aspects I found annoying.
1. It's not really clear why Skylar's stepfather wants to kill her.
2. Skylar is constantly bickering with Hawk, even when Hawk is acting reasonably. I see no reason for her not to trust him and seek his help.
3. The sex scenes are well done but it bothers me a little how close to rape some of them are.
4. The long political discourses about the Indian situation were boring and stopped the story moving forward.
5. The constant Indian attacks on Skylar get a bit repetitive.
I've made an exception and given 3 stars even though I skipped the historical bits on Custer and Indian Wars. Normally, if I end up skipping it's 2 stars.

Skylar Connor was on a stagecoach heading west, to escape her monster stepfather when the coach was ambushed by Indians. One of the Indians took her to a cabin in the woods. She had thought she was widowed but the wedding turned out to be a legal proxy and the Indian that captured her was her new husband. Surprise! As the story goes, she is Lady Douglas and her husband is Lord Douglas "Hawk" handsome half-breed son of a Sioux woman and an English lord. He had stolen her from the stagecoach and declares it is he whom she wed sight unseen. Now Hawk has a wife he doesn't want who ignites his rage and his desire and will let no other man claim.

The love interest is insufferable- he won't let her finish a sentence and he groped her because it is "his right". Didn't finish the book because he was a pig.

Interesting, that's all I can say for this is my very first novel of Shannon Drake. I didn't realize it was a series novel and this was the second.
Well, I didn't really pay attention to the conflict between Indians and whites, looked more to the story between Skylar and Hawk.
I do like the way Skylar put on more fight everytime she was caught. But the way Dillman (her stepfather) haunted her was not described so much in the beginning.
I was a bit surprised that the story of this second novel might overlap in a particular times with the first and the third. And now I was wondering what really happened to David (Hawk's younger brother) in the first and what will be happened to Sloan and Sabrina in the third for their first encounter was described already in the second. More conflict (and heat) between them certainly.

This is the first book of a 3 book series. It takes place in the Dakotas in 1875, and is just an amazing read! The Native American history is wonderfully portrayed, and the hero & heroine explosively irritating and lovable at the same time! I can hardly wait to start book two! Highly recommend this book to anyone who likes Historical Romance in the Native American genre...I think you'll enjoy this book immensely!

It was an interesting book, I found myself awake into the midnight trying to finish the book. I love Skylar and Hawk's story, looking forward to reading Sabrina and Sloan's. Though I didn't really get the Brad Dillman's part in the novel and why he wanted Skylar killed aside the fact she knew he was her father's killer. Also, how he found out she was now the 'new Lady Douglas'.

This is the first book I've read by Shannon Drake and I've read all three in the No Other series and love them all, the author really pulls you into the story of each book and each couple. This one is probably my favorite.

La cosa che emerge fin dalle prime pagine di questo romanzo è che lei è troppo testarda e orgogliosa e lui troppo impulsivo e prepotente. Se si fossero fermati a parlari per dieci minuti avrebbero risolto tutto… ma così non è purtroppo e dobbiamo subirci per più di 50 pagine insulti, ricatti e rapporti forzati, oltre ad un breve scorcio del passato dei due protagonisti (approfondito quello di lui, appena abbozzato quello di lei che chiaramente nasconde qualcosa). La Graham inserisce una buona ricostruzione storica: gli usi degli indiani (in fondo Falco è metà Sioux), la corsa all’oro, l’Unione.. che se da un lato risultano interessanti e ci aiutano a capire meglio il mondo in cui si muovono i nostri protagonisti, dall’altro rendono la lettura dispersiva e la rallentano. Il rapporto tra Falco e Skylar prosegue così fino a metà libro, dove dietro il paravento dei soldi lei riesce ad ammettere il desiderio fisico che prova per lui e per la prima volta non giace passivamente, e lui grazie al ricatto dei soldi riesce a strapparle una parte dei suoi segreti (che squallore sigh) Poi il cattivo comincia a muoversi e il rapporto tra Skylar e Falco comincia lentamente ad approfondirsi… purtroppo tutto accade molto lentamente, e dobbiamo ancora sorbirci i soliti insulti, minacce etc etc lei fino alla fine non si fida di lui e lui non perde occasione per portasela a letto… o litigarci XD assistiamo anche all’inizio del rapporto tra Sloan e Sabrina, protagonisti del 3° libro della serie che praticamente sembra una fotocopia di quello tra Falco e Skylar (lui impulsivo che la trascina a letto senza neanche sapere il suo nome, e lei troppo testarda e orgogliosa per dirgli chi è e da chi sta scappando pur di non finire nelle mani del cattivo preferisce andare a letto con un’estraneo…doppio sigh). In definitiva non posso dargli più di tre stelle sperando che la serie migliori andando avanti =)
