Here are grisly tales of grizzly (and lion and snake and crocodile) encounters to chill the heart of the armchair traveler. Underwood, a former editor-in-chief of Sports Afield magazine, acknowledges that most people stand a much higher chance of being hit by a bus than being consumed by a bear. "And yet...," he adds, ominously. His collection of news stories, legends, and eyewitness reports spans the globe and an entire century. Some of the stories sound a cautionary note about people's aggressive and foolish behavior around wildlife. Others are frankly sensationalized accounts of animals run amok. The work has no index; it does have a dustjacket with a close-up photo of a roaring bear would give any hiker pause. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
This is an eclectic and interesting collection of tales from around the world depicting occurrences of animal attacks/defenses (lets be honest, we are on their turf at the end of the day) against people. Each section covers a different animals, starting with bears, working through lions (including extracts from Patterson's Man-eaters of Tsavo), tigers, other big cats, sharks and crocodiles, finishing up with snakes. Each story is written by a different author making this a brilliant book to dip in and out of and the varied perspectives make this book all the more intriguing as what you as the reader learns from one story influences how you read the next. Well worth a read, especially if you're planning on going out to play anytime soon!
very interesting/ stupid (sometimes for some people) stories of real life encounters with all types of animals. very interesting what other countries have to fear!
