About the author

Canadian-born Mark Pytlik is the Founder and CEO of Stinkdigital. Since its launch in January 2009, the sister-company to Stinkfilm has grown to 100+ full-time staff members and been responsible for some of the world's most recognized digital and integrated work. The company's first major interactive campaign as a company (Philips "Carousel") won a Grand Prix in Cannes 2009. In the seven years since, Stinkdigital has won Cannes Lions, including eight golds and a Grand Prix, 20 D&AD pencils, 20 Webby Awards and become the youngest company ever to be inducted into the FWA Hall of Fame. Today the company's clients include Google, Twitter, Spotify, Samsung, Pinterest and Ray-Ban.

In addition to appearances on news outlets ranging from the Wall Street Journal to Fox News, Mark has spoken at the Cannes Lions, Awwwards, Eurobest and South by Southwest. A former journalist, Mark is the former Associate Editor of the advertising publication Boards, the author of the Bjork biography Wow & Flutter and a longtime contributor to the music website Pitchfork. He is currently based in New York.

Informative biography for new and longtime fans alike. Unfortunately the book only covers the first half of her career since it was written over 20 years ago now, but the content is still great.

I learned a lot more than I expected to!

For one, was shocked that she was in Miami, two blocks away, on the same day that fan mailed the bomb to the UK from his Miami apartment. When I saw her live in Miami in 2022 she mentioned nothing but positive and fun times when she’s visited over the years, but I wouldn’t have blamed her for never returning again.

The Dancer in the Dark chapter was also a highlight, because I didn’t realize the turmoil was that bad (and knowing what we now know about Trier)

Also appreciated the insights into pre-Debut and the various punk bands she was in in Iceland.

This is spread throughout the book, but I loved hearing about her friendships and collaborators with producers, other artists, and musicians. Just a complete music nerd in the best of ways. She’s always had her finger on the pulse of the experimental and electronic music scenes. In one chapter, she invites an artist that had only sold 3,000 copies to work on Vespertine, after she had randomly found it in a vinyl shop. You can still see this strong intuition she has nowadays with her work with Arca and other electronic artists (Sega Bodega, Shygirl, etc)

Stunning portrayal. Love the song break down and album info at the end. Wish all the artists I listen to had a bio such as this one. Top notch!!

(Tähtiarvioista luopuneena vain tekstiä) Björkin vaiheikas ura vuoteen 2003 saakka on herkullista luettavaa, ja enimmäkseen Mark Pytlik on tehnyt työnsä hyvällä maulla - kirjahan perustuu vain yhteistyökumppanien ja perheenjäsenten haastatteluihin ja Björkin medioille antamiin haastatteluihin. 20 vuotta vanhassa kirjassa on myös hauskaa retroa, etenkin lopun erillisosiossa jossa arvioidaan harvinaisuuksien (joita julkaistu mm. kasettina lehden välissä) musiikillista arvio.

Välillä mennään kuitenkin turhan paljon ihmissuhteisiin ja draamaan ja kaikkein raivostuttavinta ovat lukujen mauttomat päätteet: ”Hän ei osannut aavistakaan, että hän tarvitsisi jokaisen gramman tuosta voimasta selvitäkseen siitä, mitä seuraavilla 12 kuukaudella olisi tarjolla hänen varalleen.” Kronologinen rakenne sinänsä on enimmäkseen toimiva ja hyvin koottu eri lähteistä.

Kuten jo tuosta lainatusta virkkeestä kuuluu, kirjan suomenkielinen käännös on paikoin hämmentävän kankea. Käännös on täynnä anglismeja, puhutaan esimerkiksi ”rakkauden tekemisestä” ja ”yhdennestätoista tunnista”. Ja tietenkin Björkin oman äänen puute välillä häiritsee - kirja toimii ehkä paremmin viime vuonna julkaistujen Björkin omien, eri albumien syntyjä koskevien podcastien kanssa. Kaikki lainatut haastattelusitaatit Björkiltä ovat kyllä kultaa, ja Pytlik kyllä nostaa esille paljon yksityiskohtia musiikillisesta lahjakkuudesta ja työtavoista.

Hyvin kirjoitettu, Björkin musiikilliseen uraan intensiivisesti ja yksityiskohtaisesti keskittyvä teos, joka aikanaan vuonna 2003 oli ensimmäinen björkistä kirjoitettu elämäkerta...

Tässä käydään paljon läpi myös Islannin punk-skeneä 80-luvulla, ja perehdytään Björkin eri bändien henkilökemioihin. Ja lopulta todella vaiherikkaiden vuosien jälkeen perustettiin the sugarcubes, jonka birthday-sinkku valittiin viime hetkillä brittien viikon sinkuksi. Siitä alkoi Björkin tie kansainväliseen julkisuuteen, Amerikan kiertueelle jne. Sugarcubes kuitenkin hajosi 92, vain muutaman vuoden jälkeen perustamisestaan. Björk oli alusta alkaen median suosikki, ja tämä aiheutti ristivetoa bändin sisällä.
