Reclusive Mage

Rate this book
The Guild of Arcane Regulation has fractured, and new forces move on the board. Callum cannot quite declare victory, for even a weakened GAR still forces him to hide from the world at large, yet he is no longer prepared to run. Instead he builds his own strengths to stand against those who wish to do him harm.

Change, once started, is hard to stop. Callum’s actions have brought change to the world of the supernatural, but that can bring chaos and destruction even as he eliminates tyranny and corruption. He has to move beyond being one man against the world, and stand in the world he’s made.

I have very much enjoyed the previous books in this series and I was enjoying this book as well until the Constance/Lucy issue.

The book starts out kinda slow. I would almost say slice of life type first half, which is something I enjoy, but then the Constance/Lucy issue hits and it all drops down hill. Honestly if this hadn't been a joint read I probably would have DNFed it right then.

It does kinda come around towards the end; although, now I am more interested in the secondary characters than the main. I will listen to the next book with the hopes that it will go back to a style similar to the first three book and to find out what happens to some of the secondary characters.

P.S. The time skips in this book were just awful as well. OMG so hard to try and keep track of where they are in the time line.

Fully two-thirds of this novel had no driving force. Things were simply happening in the life of the protagonist but there was nothing driving or pulling him toward any goal. It was enjoyable enough, as his life is fairly interesting.

The last third seemed to get back on track, promising a little more from the next book... I hope.

This book is a massive shame because I really loved the first book in this series and I was hoping that this was going to be one of my new favourite series going forward. However, starting with the last book, this story has lost quite a lot of its lustre, charm, and intrigue. What started as a character focused series that revelled in world building and magic has turned into a shallow story that feels more like a list of events than a novel.

For this reason I got a third of the way through this novel and I could go no further. The story was not engaging me and I realised I was just trying to put in a token effort just to finish the book for the sake of the interest I have in the series from the first two novels and not on the merits of the novel itself.

For that reason, I am probably going to bow out of this series here. I enjoyed how it started and also the potential that this series had but unfortunately it just didn't deliver.

I guess different strokes for different folks. I continue to be surprised by the number of low ratings for this series. I'll admit there are a few aspects to the series that could get under a person's skin if they have particular pet peeves, but generally speaking, this is a fun story that's moving at a consistent speed.

This is a volume release of a story originally released as a web serial, which influences the pacing. Similar to how a great tv series would have a hard time fitting into the format of a great film and vice versa, serialized web releases flow at a different rate than novels that happen to be part of a series. That being said, I think this series does a good job at sectioning off parts of the story for volumes and the books usually end with a fairly important and climactic event. All too often, other serials struggle greatly with pacing and seem to climax in the middle of the book and then just carry on for another 100 pages. This series avoids that pitfall.

I usually like a faster pace to the overarching plot, but things are moving steadily in the direction I expected and there are plenty of mini-climaxes and obstacles along the way.

If I had one gripe about this series, it's the trajectory of the main character. It's only a preference rather than a flaw per se, but the MC has maintained some of the naïve personality traits that pull him into trouble while he has been gradually losing a lot of his trademark "paranoia" that kept him alive through his tribulations. He is letting himself get into trouble which seems more obviously a bad idea considering he's been gaining more experience. But now he is skating through a lot of these situations with the help of other characters. Which, I'll admit, is entirely realistic for the story and the plot, but just for me personally, it is less satisfying at times.

There is a particular supporting character that I've never really been a fan of and the character's role has grown and led to most of my complaints in the previous paragraph.

All things told though, I really enjoy the overall world the author has built and especially think the fae finding a story to live angle is interesting. The upcoming books are likely to delve deeper into that very area, so I'm looking forward to them.

I enjoyed and would recommend the first three books of this series. Not this one. The stakes just aren't there any more. The big bad we've been following since the book one just decided to give up. The love interest went from from "girlfriend" to "pregnant with second child" over the course of a single book, almost entirely off-screen. Nothing kept happening. I read with one eye on the "percent read" number so I could see how close to the end I was getting. I get the impression the author did too.

Quality is dropping. this is 2 and a half stars, maybe three.
This one wanders around in search of a point.
Yeah it ends punchy, but I have little faith that book #5 will be much better after the steady decline from book 1.
Still there are a few interesting moments in a mass of meh'.

Assassin Mage

This guy sure loves to murder. Runs into a problem with others, murder. Someone threatens him, murder. He hears some rumors, murder. You get it. Other than the wanton violence, it's an interesting story. There is no plot in place, so don't expect any finale or meaningful dialogue from encounters preordained since the beginning of the series. If he meets or slightly encounters enemies he goes with the nuclear option and nukes them from orbit. His only possible nemesis in House Duvall is played more so like a gag than anything. If you're planning on reading this don't expect much other than casual murder and slow exploration of the MCs plight and powers. There is sort of a cliffhanger, but it's meh. they tried many times to justify the MCs penchant for murderhoboing any supernatural problems he ran into, but by the end it's almost laughable to justify anymore.

While I still enjoy the magic system and its exploitation, I have grown to realize this series has gone rather downhill.

I read a comment somewhere on these books that I wanted to disregard, but unfortunately, it stuck and grew until I just couldn't un-see it for my own enjoyment.

The characters being... so much less paranoid, even downright trusting and friendly--based on extreme power and scariness--is a plot problem I might have ignored.

The inherent racism, not so much.

What? Racism? It's vamps and werewolves and humans and fae. Wouldn't that be a no-brainer, who cares? I'd say sure, and even got behind all the vamps being relatively no good because they do just prey on humans. But when I take a step back and think about a True Blood mapping of supernatural races to ugly stereotypes and internet-ugly talking points, it's kinda hard to ignore that this prepper West Virginian white boy with a fetish for 40's style chicks has never had much thought about the ease of murdering a whole class of people because they've never, ever, ever had a damn good thing to contribute to society, and will never even open up a single line of dialogue to that effect. Just massive firepower from a hidden location.

Now, it may never be explicitly said, but vamps and the Night Lands portal might rather easily be interpreted as blacks, and intensely sending all of them back to their homeland, and if they can't go, to just murder them all on Earth's soil. There's never any introspection on any of this. It's just assumed they're bloodsuckers despite working hand-in-hand with the authoritarian gov that everyone's now seceding from, a-la very Maga-like, only now to make their own gov that gets rid of all the undesirables.

And let's make this also clear: there's no definition of undesirables. It's "whatever I say is undesirable" and "I'm not going to get into semantics with anyone. No debate. Just a show of power."

This is a far cry from the running, hiding prepper, but now that he has a bit of power, he's showing himself to be the mob boss he always wanted to be.

I'm getting tired of this. He's a third-world-king and it looks like he's going to be a full-world king by the next book. His whole claim to righteousness is "I go by my gut. If someone is preying on the normal folk, I'll kill them." Only he decides who is normal folk. And it can change on any whim.

Screw this slippery racist slope.

"Reclusive Mage (Paranoid Mage #4)" by Inadvisably Compelled is a book that, unfortunately, does not live up to the standards set by its predecessors in the series. While it attempts to build on the established world and characters, it falls short in several key areas.

The story continues to follow the adventures of the protagonist, a reclusive mage with a paranoid streak. However, this installment struggles with character development. The central character's growth and motivations remain stagnant, and there is a lack of meaningful character evolution. Supporting characters, too, lack depth and often feel like one-dimensional plot devices rather than fully realized individuals. This makes it challenging for readers to invest emotionally in the characters' fates.

The pacing of the narrative is uneven, with long stretches of exposition and internal monologues that slow down the plot's progression. While introspection can enhance character-driven stories, in this case, it hinders the story's momentum and leaves readers craving more action and external conflict.

The plot, which previously had elements of mystery and intrigue, feels less engaging in this installment. It lacks the same level of suspense and complexity that drew readers into the series initially. The narrative meanders, and the central conflict is not as compelling or well-defined as in previous books.

The writing style, while serviceable, does not have the depth and vivid descriptions necessary to fully immerse the reader in the fantasy world. The world-building is also underdeveloped, with a lack of clear rules and dynamics, which is crucial in a fantasy setting.

In conclusion, "Reclusive Mage (Paranoid Mage #4)" is a disappointing addition to the series. It struggles with character development, pacing, and plot engagement, leaving readers with a sense of unfulfilled potential. While fans of the series may still find some enjoyment in revisiting the familiar characters and world, this installment may not hold the same appeal as its predecessors. Readers looking for a more immersive and engaging fantasy experience might be left wanting more.

I read all 5 of the books of this series one after the other on Royal Road before the physical versions arrived. Unfortunately that means I cant separate out my thoughts on the individual books but overall its still really good.

It starts with a non-typical urban fantasy protagonist who takes one look at the secrets of the magical world and decides he wants nothing to do with the multi generational authoritarian nonsense it represents. The main character has a single rare type of magic that he gets to abuse with modern physics against the magical group thats largely locked into the 1800's to become a real menace, and there is a lot of the early story that is the established mages relentlessly hunting him down.

Eventually he manages to establish a safe operating base at which point the tone changes a bit, it doesnt get worse with the shift in a rare example of the type, but it is very different once the main character can stop running and starts being able to kill.. pretty much anyone he needs to at ranges that can not be contested.

At this point a side story thats been running since the start comes a bit more into the spotlight, where a more standard group of urban fantasy protagonists get to start working in the chaos the actual main character created and really? its just fun, with fairly consistent worldbuilding and a soft magic system that still makes sense in the lore of the world.

It might not be worth paying for the physical version, but for a story thats still fully free on RR its a great way to kill a few days reading.

Audible edition review

Lots of politics in this one.

This was a bit of a disappointment after the past few books. We've moved away from quick action and chases to long, drawn out political meetings where potential actions are debated back and forth. I can think of maybe 2 or 3 exciting bits and they were all over in minutes.

The pacing is slow too. Book 1 is about him discovering he's a mage, fleeing, hiding, etc. Book 4 covers Callum sitting at home gardening for most of it and his kid goes from unconceived to about 3 years old over the course of the story.

Other than nothing ever really happening, the story isn't bad but I was bored enough that I don't think I'll read book 5. The narration was good but Lucy's voice is still very grating. I'd stick to the first 3 books as a great trilogy.

3.5 stars. Still a good series. However it's honestly starting to drop in quality. The falling in love and having a kid all happened way way to fast. Honestly I don't feel like the character or plot shows half the interesting things that originally made me really enjoy the series. The one man against the world that made it so intense and exciting is just gone now. It really is sad to see the quality drop so much and a bunch of months time skip's that add up to like a year or more. It went from no time skips to a bunch of them which honestly is very lame and shows the lack of creative thinking on the authors part.

Not a bad book, but unfortunately this is probably the weakest in the series. The quality hasnt dropped but the large time skips didnt really work for me and gave the impression of rushing. Some of the best moments are other characters reactions to the MC actions but we didnt get to see much of that in my opinion. Honestly I could go on but it would be nitpicking what is still actually a good book, honestly If you've enjoyed the previous volumes you'll still like this volume and for anyone looking at the series as a whole I strongly recommend it.

I just finished reading the 4th and last book in the series and now bummed because I can't find another or something similar I think I'll like. Of course, I've always got 2 or 3 different books I'm in the process of reading, but so far those just can't measure up. Anyway, thank you to the author for keeping me turning the pages for more. "The Ghost" is one of my all time favorite main characters. Why? Because he's not a wimp, not a victim and has the guts along with the determination to serve up justice as required! If anyone can recommend another magic hero type series, please share!

I enjoy this series in general and while this book isn't bad necessarily it definitely lacks a direction or general purpose. It reads more like a series of short stories including time jumps that serve no purpose other then getting through Lucy's pregnancy. Outside of the constance section nothing in the first 3/4 of the book is all that necessary for progression of a 'main' story. The random stories and bits of politics could be condensed into 3 or 4 chapters so there could be room for a more focused story.

I really enjoy this series. It's just great seeing how assumptions make the paranoia seem justified.
This wasn't as crazy as the previous books, but still enjoyable.

With what's on the cover, the "ghost" would have more to lose, and be easier to threaten.
This is not where I guessed this series would go.

I will pick up the sequel when out, but some of my hype is gone. He is a family man now, so he will be taking far less risks.

just want left alone!

First, this dives right into the action. I strongly recommend you read, at least a few chapters of the last book to refresh your memory.

Second, this could be cleaner. It’s not terrible, but the copy editing flaws are pervasive.

Finally, I will be looking forward to the next book. I enjoy seeing the MC Weaponize things in unique ways.

Heck yeah, loved it

Great progression of the story, new magic and characters and storylines, I loved it all. If you've read the books up until this one, it satisfies nicely. If you haven't, I wouldn't suggest picking this one up before doing that, stories are told in order for a reason.

Dunno this kinda felt like a filler arc in some anime that has been going on for way too long. There's little character development or like actual story it's more like a collection of stuff that happens in this world. The flow of time is also kinda fucked and half of the time I wasn't really sure if the next chapter was hours days months or years later. All in all it felt kinda meh.

This was a worthy 4th installment. The series idea was original and interesting, what if there turned out to be magic, but the secret magic society was a bunch of heartless fascist assholes? This one just continues the story. We're treated to new breakthroughs in Callum's magic technique, and more crazy magic battles. The end was rather abrupt, but I still liked the book.

Good continuation, but OP

I like the series. A guy who missed all the checks to see if he has magic and can 'see' them as they are somehow.

Oddly, the series hasn't really looked into his past.
Jason has survived one step ahead of those that want him dead.
Lucy, Jason, and their toddler are now looking to set up a home.

needs better editing

Still an interesting story. But way too much minutiae regarding the MCs magical experiments. Also quite a few typos. Finally the child seemed entirely superfluous.

Again another excellent book

Thanks I really enjoyed the book, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book. Would like to see Callum doing more though. Did feel that some scenes lacked context of enough description, though it was a great novel.

Heh heh. More fun with Callum and Lucy. They have a family now, and some time was skipped, but hey, this reader doesn't want to spend time with a baby, so it's good!

The stakes are raised and I sense a big finale book coming next.

This is a fun series, present day, magic but a different spin on it. In this book the hero gets a wife and a baby (no powers for either yet really) and has to deal with a lot of interesting problems that generally end in someone dead. I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next one.

This was the first of the books where some of the inconsistencies in the story became a bit annoying. Also the whole portal stuff was beginning to go beyond my ability to suspend my disbelief. I'm beginning to feel the author is letting the story get away from him.
