For serious students of yoga who have an established pranayama practice, this book is a follow-up to Rosen’s previous book, The Yoga of Breath. Here he picks up where he left off, offering a selection of traditional yogic techniques for those who wish to deepen their practice of pranayama and their understanding of the ancient wisdom of yoga. Rosen skillfully puts forward an array of awareness disciplines, breathing practices, mudras, and seals, interspersed with anecdotes and quotes from ancient texts.
A free audio program available online offers a variety of guided practices so that listeners can create their own pranayama series, with guidance from the author in the appendix. (Download instructions available in the book.)
Of two books on breathing, I thought this would be the easier and more interesting. It was easier but not as interesting as Iyengar's book on breathing. I felt the author was too familiar in his writing, lots of asides and parenthetical statements not germane to the book. I was somewhat disappointed in the references to the first of the author's books and the fact there was no review of that material, even in its briefest form to catch the reader of this book up with the subject being discussed. I was left feeling I should read the first book in order to have the whole story. I did like the philosophy, mythology and history of yoga that the author included. This book combined with Iyengar's book make a fine pair but Iyengar's book is enough on the subject of breathing.
