Alberto Ruy-Sánchez Lacy nació en la ciudad de México el siete de diciembre de 1951. Hijo de padre y madre originarios del norte de México, de Sonora. Está casado con la historiadora Margarita de Orellana. Tienen dos hijos, Andrea (nacida en 1984) y Santiago (en 1987) Vivió en París ocho años, donde estudió entre otros profesores con Roland Barthes, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Rancière, terminó un doctorado y se hizo editor y escritor. Desde 1988 dirige la revista Artes de México, que en dos décadas obtuvo más de ciento cincuenta premios nacionales e internacionales al arte editorial.

En 1987, con su primera novela, Los nombres del aire recibió el más importante premio literario mexicano, el Xavier Villaurrutia, y se convirtió inmediatamente en un libro de culto, que desde entonces no ha dejado de ser reimpreso cada año. En él inicia una exploración poética y narrativa del deseo que continúan las novelas En los labios del agua (1996), que recibió en su edición francesa el prestigioso Prix des Trois Continents; Los jardines secretos de Mogador (2001), Premio Cálamo/La otra mirada (Zaragoza, 2002); La mano del fuego: un Kama Sutra involuntario (2007). Y Nueve veces el asombro (México, 2005).

Su obra ha sido traducida a varios idiomas y distinguida además por la Fundación Guggenheim en Nueva York, el Sistema Nacional de Creadores en México, la Universidad de Louisville en Kentucky, la Fundación Tinker a través de la Universidad de Stanford en California, y el Gobierno de Francia que lo condecoró como Oficial de la Orden de las Artes y de las Letras. En 2006 se le otorgó el Premio Juan Pablos al Mérito Editorial, la máxima distinción que un editor puede recibir en México por su trayectoria profesional. Con frecuencia imparte conferencias en Europa, África, Asia y América. Ha sido varias veces profesor invitado en Stanford University, en Middlebury College y durante cinco años dirigió el seminario taller de Creative Non Fiction en Banff Center for the Arts en Canadá.

Alberto Ruy Sánchez (1951) is a fiction and non fiction writer, poet and essayist from Mexico City. He received his Ph.D. in 1980 from the University of Paris under the directorship of Roland Barthes.
His novels include: Los nombres del aire (1987, Premio Xavier Villaurrutia), Los demonios de la lengua (1987), En los labios del agua (1996, recipient of the Prix des Trois Continents for its French translation by Gabriel Iaculli); and Los jardines secretos de Mogador: Voces de tierra (2001, Premio Cálamo la Otra Mirada). His most recent publications include, Limulus. Visiones del fósil viviente/​Visions of the Living Fossil (2004, co-authored with the artist Brian Nissen and translated by Rhonda Dahl Buchanan) and Nueve veces el asombro (2005). He has published widely in scholarly journals and is the author of several books of literary criticism, including Una introducción a Octavio Paz (1990, recipient of the Premio José Fuentes Mares). Since 1988 he has served as the editor-in-chief of Artes de México, which has won more than one hundred national and international editorial awards. In 2000 he was proclaimed Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government, and in 2005 he received the honor of Gran Orden de Honor Nacional al Mérito Autoral in Mexico City. He is also an Honorary Citizen of Louisville, Kentucky, an Honorable Kentucky Colonel, and an Honorary Captain of the majestic steamship, the Belle of Louisville.
