While a lot of techniques are "old" and mostly useless in a MMA match we should not forget the context of this book: The Gracie Style of jiu-jitsu to win Valetudo match (pre-MMA era)
As stated above you cannot expect the simple side-kick > double leg > side control > montada > close will work in a MMA match, but IT WILL work on striker.
I like it back then and i still appreciate it

Royce Gracie is a legend and deservedly so. This book does a great job of showing some great MMA and Jiu-jitsu moves. Great pictures and innovative techniques.
