Edward becomes the assistant to a new magician who just moved into a cottage outside of the village. But Moongobble is not a very good magician. He is still learning magic and hoping to be admitted into the exclusive magician's guild. He has to complete several quests in order to prove his worth to the other magicians, and Edward is coming along to help!

I love the imaginative plot and delightful fairy-tale characters. The story is simple, but meaningful and full of fun! I like how each book in the series builds on each other as we meet more characters and visit more enchanted places in this fantasy world. These books are really funny too! The characters are sassy with some great dialogue and fun jokes.

The magic is very innocent, and the stories are never too scary. I love how almost every villain they encounter throughout the series turns out to be a misunderstood monster or a cursed person who needs help. They go questing around doing good for others and solving magical mysteries.

I think it's very sweet how Edward and Moongobble establish a trust right away. Although Moongobble is the adult and Edward is a child, it is often Edward who takes care of and protects Moongobble. But Moongobble is also very protective over Edward, so between the two of them, they come safely through all their adventures.

The writing is simple enough for a first-grader to read, but enjoyable enough for an adult to read. I loved this fun series!

The fourth book in the Moongooble series, and just when everything seems to be going well with Moongobble as a full Magician, a mischief monster shows up. And not just anyone, but Snelly, the daughter of the Queen of the Mischief Monsters. Edward, Moongobble and their friends must return Snelly to her mom before her mother starts a mischief war.

Another super fun story, and my five year old son absolutely loved it! we immediately had to start the next book in the series.

Didn't like it as much as the first three; the new/titular character is very annoying.

A great continuation of the series, with themes of acceptance, family importance, and responsibility.

ORIGINALLY POSTED AT Fantasy Literature.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE AUDIO VERSION SPECIFICALLY.

The Mischief Monster is the fourth book in Bruce Coville’s delightful MOONGOBBLE AND ME series for ages 9-12. I’ve been listening to this series of short books on audio with my girls who are 6 and 9 years old. Each book is about an hour long and dramatized by Full Cast Audio, which means there’s a cast of readers playing parts rather than just one narrator.

In The Mischief Monster, Edward, Moongobble, and their friends try to return a mischievous monster princess named Snelly to her home in Monster Mountain. As usual, there’s a surprise twist at the end. The plot of The Mischief Monster is cute and funny (especially when Urk the toad gets turned into a fluffy pink kitty). My girls loved the story.

Though I’ve been recommending Full Cast Audio’s versions so far, I can’t do so for this installment. The voice used for Snelly, the titular character of The Mischief Monster, is piercingly high-pitched. This is supposed to be cute and she’s supposed to sound like a brat, but it’s so effective that it soon got on my nerves. Even my daughters were annoyed by Snelly’s voice.

If you’ve enjoyed the previous MOONGOBBLE AND ME books, you’ll be happy with The Mischief Monster. I just suggest reading this one in print. My 2.5 star rating reflects my disappointment with the audio version, but my daughter Tali said she’d give it 3.5 stars.

Edward's good friend, Moongobble, is finally a full-fledged magician, but it's not as great as Edward had hoped. Now things are quite boring wihtout having to accompany Moongobble on tests and tasks. But then a strange little creature that goes by the name of Snelly comes bounding into their lives. Snelly has run away from home and must be returned before her mother declares a mischief war. But Snelly lives in Monster Mountain and it will be a scary journey to get there. And when they finally arrive, there's more in store for them that they originally thought.

This is apparently thr thirs in the Monngobble and Me series. I'm not sure how I found this, but it was definitely cute and a good chapter book for young readers. The world is fun and interesting and the text is simple. I'll be looking for the others soon.

Snelly, a young monster has fled Monster Mountain for the village of Pigbone, after dropping her little brother off at the crude castle of Oggledy Nork (a sort of cretinous caveman giant with a speech impediment). She was jealous of the attention her mother, the Queen of Monster Mountain, was giving to the prince and felt his removal from the family home was the best course. Now, Moongobble, an addled magician, and his trusty friends Edward and Urk need to get Snelly back home before war is declared by the queen. In the meantime, however, Snelly has fallen in love with Urk, who, because of Moongobble's terrible command of magic, has been transformed into an undignified pink kitty. Urk's metamorphosis both complicates and resolves the problem the friends face in this installment of Coville's series.

This is a cute book. I just finished reading with my kindergartener.

Moongobble is not a full wizard. At least he has been accepted by the wizarding community. He still has a lot to learn about spells.

The daughter of the queen of the mischief monsters runs away from home. Moongobble, Edward, Urk and the dragon go on an adventure to take her home. They get her home and find that their work is not finished. Another adventure is around the corner.

Great fun for kids and the young at heart.

I read this book outloud to my family. I loved doing all the different voices. Irk has such a deep stracthy voice that it hurt sometimes to do. My fav character voice to do is Snelly, the tiny monster princess. The easiest character voice to do was edward. This was a fun series to read. I am sad that this was the last book. I hope that Bruce Coville would write a 5th book about the curse of oggledy nork.

Moongobble may have completed his three mighty tasks, but the adventures continue! I do think this one lacked a little in terms of the feel-good themes I loved about the first three in the series, but it was still engaging and well-worth reading aloud before bedtime. My kids love this series, and it was fun to watch my nine-year-old figure out the plot twist well before it was revealed (and well before his mother! Haha).

I think the Moongobble series is very cute. They are simple without being dumbed down, the characters are charming and I imagine that they would be perfect for those who are starting to read on their own, or even as a bedtime story (told over several nights) for smaller children.

My 4 year old is enthralled by this series. We just read this entire book in one sitting, and she's not a sit still for long kind of kid. I'm finding this series a little above her age level, lots of name calling and use the word stupid which is not my favourite (I wouldnt like it for an 8 year old either, we just have lots of conversations about what is funny to read but not to say) but but the story is funny and engaging.
