Randy Dean Noble is a supernatural thriller kind of guy. He grew up on a slew of movies and books, those of the fantastical variety inspiring most of his writing interests.
Working a plethora of minimum wage jobs took Randy into computer science and a career in IT (because he didn't want to eat PB&J the rest of his life). But, his passion has always been writing, and his dream is to be a full-time fiction author.
When he's not working his day job in IT, and not watching some new show on the ridiculous amount of streamers out there, he's writing.
Paul, the Devil's victim was not a sympathetic character. He was an idiot, TSTL. There is a reason why it's dangerous to hitch-hike. The Devil is the Terminator, he just wouldn't die. He was a serial killer, torturer and a sexual deviant. My eyes bulged only once, when I thought he was going to turn Paul in to a eunuch but alas, he was interrupted just in the nick of time.
I saw this story was free for Kindle and decided to check it out. There were a lot of negative reviews, mainly saying how gross and sick it is. One person even said they wanted to vomit. Being someone who doesn't mind "gross and sick", and has never read a book that made me want to vomit, I was intrigued (especially since it was free. After downloading, I immeadinatey started reading and it took me about a half hour to read this start to finish (yes, it's THAT short).
The story is about Paul, a guy who after being left at the side of the road by his girlfriend, begins hitchhiking and against his better judgement, get inside a truck with a sketchy looking guy named Earl. Soon after, Paul can see he has made the wrong decision as Earl turns out to want a little something in return for helping Paul out. All I will say is, if Paul thought dating his girlfriend was Hell, he had no idea how worse much it could be. Overall, this book was not as gross as some pointed it out to be, and in fact I think this was due to the matter of it being so over the top, it couldn't be that scary. I actually found myself giggling at times and I certainly didn't feel the neeed to vomit. If you like the sick and twisted type of tale, this is certainly worth getting for free.
Very quick read and a free download I found on amazon.
Overall it is not bad. Reminded me slightly of John Connolly's style of writing short stories but a lot more coarse in its construction.
Some very interesting ideas though and I think with some decent editing and polishing could have been a lot better. Reading some other reviews, it is really not as sick and perverted as some are making out (I have read a lot worse in my time) but if you are not used to such violence and practically constant swearing, then give this one a miss.
A quick read that works well as a reminder about the perils of hitchhiking. And, you know, the perils of hell-creatures on the loose and the chaos and destruction they like to cause. A bit bloody and a bit creepy with a touch of sexual non-consent (nothing graphic, just talking about forcing the main character to pleasure someone orally against his will), this was a nice dive into the dark desires that drive some people to do unspeakable things.
This wasn't supposed to be funny but it was. The language was very coarse; if the author removed all the f-bombs, the story would have been shorter by half.
Dialog was completely unrealistic, as were several of the situations. No real build-up to the story, and the ending was so-so. Not the best thing I've read lately.
