I had to perform this play for my GCSE drama exam. I played Mel, and I think I did a brilliant job. Unfortunately however, drama is a pretentious subject, so I only got a C for my performance. Oh well, next stop Hollywood I guess.
(Btw I'm joking, GCSE drama was fun, but it sucked balls)
Re-stirred it might be, but over 25 years on Shakers is still a bit dated. 'Contemporary' references include Filofaxes, Ford Sierras, Selina Scott, The Blow Monkeys, Fine Young Cannibals, YTS and the casual acceptance of sexual assault in bars.
Like its companion Bouncers, it's tightly scripted and rewards a well-drilled cast but will challenge a cast and director who aren't really on their toes.
Similarly dated are the stereotypes of the northern working class and of theatre-goers (who are portrayed as chinless toffs). And how many people vomit in cocktail bars on a normal evening?
The script is well-crafted but I found it a bit dated.
This is a great if you’re looking for a small ensemble piece to act, it’s an onion as Shrek would say, it’s got layers. If you’ve done bar work you’ll probably really appreciate the insight into the characters.
