This was a Free Friday selection on the Nook, which I don't typically download, but this looked like it might be an interesting mystery. What to say about this book? About halfway through, I couldn't figure out if I was continuing to read because I actually wanted to know what was going to happen or if I was just reading it ironically or if I was reading it out of spite or what. It was kind of like reading a Lifetime movie. The whole thing was cheesy - everyone was super fit and good-looking. The rich people were filthy rich to the point of ridiculousness. The gruesome parts were ridiculously gruesome. There were several times where I thought, "Well if this thing happens, then I will definitely stop reading." And then that thing happened, and I rolled my eyes yet continued to read. The first person narrator was a detective named Claire who had this annoying habit of addressing the reader and "telling" instead of "showing." She'd say things like, "I guess I'm just sarcastic, you know?" And it made me want to punch the book. Yet, I kept reading. (I will say, there were some chapters interspersed with the first-person narration that were just straight narration, which I found much more gripping and well-written than anything through Claire's eyes.) The climax/conclusion of this book was so totally wackadoo that I don't even know what to say about it. I unwillingly suspended my disbelief. And yet -- I breezed through the book really quickly, so there was something about the story that kept me interested, which I guess I should give the author credit for. And maybe I should get over my book snobbery. Fair enough. (2 1/2 stars)

p.s. Since I read this on the Nook and didn't have the cover in front of me all the time, I forgot what the title was, so when I went to review it and I looked back for the title, I just burst out laughing. I don't want to spoil anything, but the title is actually hilarious.

Linda Ladd is a new author to me and I think a relatively new author to begin with (this book is her first and was published in 2006). But once you start reading this book, she comes across as a veteran writer. This book is very well written, with a plot that will throw you for a loop.

This book has what appears to be 2 story lines, that work towards joining each other. A great police procedural with a very good cast of characters. The main character has a bit of a shady past that is given out in small details at first, then towards the end of the book, pretty much her whole background is known. Detective Claire Morgan could remind some of Lieutenant Eve Dallas to an extent. Claire is your typical detective that some times marches to her own drum and inevitably gets herself in a bind or two.

One of the first suspects is an extremely wealthy psychiatrist who is also extremely good looking, with a bit of a shady past - sound familiar ID friends?

Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, yes it took me a bit longer to read due to the holidays, but I never lost my focus.

As I mentioned - 2 story lines, the first is actually quite disturbing as to subject matter and we are given bits and pieces in the form a chapter placed between wrap ups or intensity within the main story line - I don't want to give out any spoilers, it would definitely ruin the "OMG" factor.

I just came across this series within the last week or so - and I am so glad I did. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves police procedurals with a touch of romance thrown in (no graphic details, but enough to let your imagination fulfill your mind). So 2 thumbs up and 5 stars for a great read.

A new author/series for me and a strong 4 stars~~~Detective Claire Morgan pursues a uber creepo serial killer. The twist at the end...a couple of them, really...totally surprised me. Ladd's first person takes a bit to get used to, but that's true with many author's writing styles. I love Nick as the romantic male lead. He is truly an amazing guy to see through Claire's armor and put up with her tough, chip-on-the-shoulder attitude. I wasn't a big fan of Claire's at first, but finding out what she went through in life helped me adjust that first impression. Just saying...I was practically choking on the In Death series references/similarities that were being tossed out throughout the book. It's not a totally bad thing, but I never really know how to feel about it, either. No one can match the real thing, but oh, how they try(; Jumping right into the next book in the series~~~

Yikes!

Is there a genre called Romantic Horror? If so, Ladd would win with this creepy but well written book.

As a veteran InDeath series fan I have to say I think I enjoyed the millionaire Black as love interest reveal even more than the fairly quick hot 'n horny over a good cup of coffee connect between Roarke and Eve.
I was right there with Claire not trusting Black as far as she could throw him. He was written arrogantly enough that I wanted him to be a suspect. Mission accomplished for the writer.

The creepy bordering on pure horror of the investigation was almost too much for me, and that is saying a lot.

I like Morgan's style and angsty back story so I will hang in there and hope I can stomach the cases to come.

Pretty gruesome serial killer. Melodramatic with the murderer being supposedly the person you least suspect, but it makes no sense to me. The killer is so disturbed that it is impossible to believe they could pretend to be normal for any length of time, much less fooling so many for so long.

Where to start with this one? Definitely gruesome, truly disturbing in parts and creepy! Linda Ladd is a new to me author and this was a riveting book to read. Claire Morgan is a police officer who has moved from LA to Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri after a personal tragedy. A grisly celebrity murder at a local brings her in contact with uber psychiatrist Nick Black, and sparks fly. This story has two threads, one past and one present, that eventually merge and reach an intense finale. The first story line is a little disturbing and very violent but gives us an insight into the making of the killer, which we would otherwise not have. Claire is initially difficult to understand and even to like, but as her past comes to light, you understand why she is the way she is.
Ladd's characters are revealed in stages so our initial perception is not necessarily their true nature. Extremely well written, this story is a blend of Stephen King meets JD Robb and I am looking forward to reading more of this series.

Giallo che vira leggermente e in maniera molto soft al romantic suspense, ma che lascia tanto spazio alla parte thriller. Avrei preferito una costruzione più omogenea della parte romantica, più che altro perché viene buttata là una storia che ha poche basi da cui partire e su cui costruire. E invece ci ritroviamo un colpo di fulmine che, se per lei potrebbe essere giustificato, vista la figaggine del soggetto, per lui è quantomeno incomprensibile e surreale, vista l' antipatia di lei, vorresti prenderla a schiaffi a ogni capitolo per quanto è insopportabile. Ma si sa, all' amor non si comanda, anche in presenza di serial killer pericolosissimi.
I capitoli dedicati all'infanzia del killer sono ben dosati e un vero pugno nello stomaco, cosi come la soluzione dell'identità del misterioso killer, ma la parte finale l'ho trovata eccessiva e fin troppo rocambolesca e inverosimile.

Un thriller davvero ben fatto, la storia ti prende fin dalla prima pagina e non ti permette più di staccarti dal libro. Il giallo è costruito a regola d'arte, l'autrice guida il lettore verso la soluzione del caso con tutti i pezzi del puzzle che piano piano vanno al proprio posto fino al colpo di scena finale. Molto ben caratterizzati anche i personaggi principali: Claire Morgan, l'ispettore a capo delle indagini che nasconde più di un segreto nel suo doloroso passato, Nicholas Black, molto più che uno psicologo che traccia profili di serial killer e che non potrete non amare e naturalmente Moccioso, su cui non dirò nulla per non spoilerare. Un libro da leggere assolutamente!

4 stelline perché è stata una piacevole lettura e perché per finirlo, già che c'ero, ho fatto quasi le 2 di notte.
Romantic suspense abbastanza ben bilanciato, che riesce a mantenere vivo l'interesse, anche se la parte thriller fa abbastanza acqua (troppe cose non mi tornano, troppi eccessi) e la parte romance ha elementi di esagerazione (quanti soldi ha e quante cose fa/ha fatto il protagonista?! Ce ne uscivano 3 di personaggi...).
Comunque, ho letto decisamente di peggio.

Moccioso sentì il fuoco ardere ancora più bruciante nel ventre, e i suoi pensieri tornarono alla rimessa delle carrozze. Pensò di far del male alla cuoca e alla bambina, colpendole con la coramella ancora e ancora. Le fiamme dentro di lui divennero sempre più calde finché capì che il giorno dopo avrebbe dovuto farlo. Ma quando scese la collina con la coramella in mano, la cuoca e la ragazzina se n’erano andate e la porta era aperta. Così attirò Mr. Coda Nervosa con delle ghiande come aveva fatto la ragazzina. Afferrò lo scoiattolo per la coda, gli torse il collo e lo sbatté ancora e ancora sui gradini del portico finché il fuoco non si placò dentro di lui. Poi tornò a casa sentendosi molto meglio. Quando Moccioso raccontò a sua madre del piccolo scoiattolo, lei disse: «Meritava di morire visto che era amico della donna terribile e della ragazzina che ti hanno fatto tanto male. Oltretutto, non è così brutto essere morti. Mi piace stare qui nella cella frigorifera con tutti i miei amici. È bello essere morti. Forse potresti portare qui Mr. Coda Nervosa a giocare con noi.»

Una piccola cittadina sulle rive di un lago, tranquilla e fuori mano, è qui che la detective Claire Morgan è andata a vivere dopo che qualcosa di gravissimo le è successo tempo prima a Los Angeles, dove era un agente decorato e di grande reputazione. Dalle sue notti insonni e dal desiderio ossessivo di non ricordare, percepiamo il suo dolore e il suo tormento, così come la sua solitudine e la sua gratitudine per Charlie, il suo capo, che le ha permesso di tornare al lavoro. È una donna estremamente riservata che non parla mai di sé stessa e che riesce a lasciarsi andare veramente solo con Harve, un ex agente ora sulla sedia a rotelle, che a Los Angeles era il suo partner e che è sempre disposto ad offrirle aiuto e amicizia. Ma la tranquillità di Claire così faticosamente ritrovata viene ben presto messa da parte, a “Cedar Bend Lodge” il lussuoso resort del famoso Nicholas Black viene commesso un atroce omicidio, una giovane attrice ha trovato una morte orrenda e particolare e molti indizi puntano il dito sull’affasciante e ricchissimo psichiatra. Per Claire è un attimo provare subito un’istintiva antipatia per il bel dottore che intuisce abbia più di un segreto nascosto e mentre lei tenta in ogni modo di trovare le prove atte ad incastrarlo, lui sembra incredibilmente affascinato da questa donna pungente che nasconde i suoi sentimenti dietro il sarcasmo. Ma più procede l’indagine e più ci rende conto che la giovane Sylvie Borden non è stata l’unica vittima, una mente malata sta mettendo a punto un piano accurato e Claire in qualche modo, ne fa parte e mentre il pericolo si avvicina sempre più, il detective dovrà decidere se fidarsi o meno dei sentimenti che comincia a provare per il suo attraente e fascinoso sospettato.

Devo ancora una volta complimentarmi per le scelte editoriali di Triskell Edizioni che ci ha permesso di conoscere Claire, personaggio alquanto interessante, e una serie che comincia davvero in modo superbo. Quello della Ladd è un thriller davvero ben congeniato, che riesce ad avvincere fin dalle prime pagine dove veniamo catapultati nel mondo pieno di orrori di un bambino di cinque anni alle prese con un padre che non sfigurerebbe in nessun film dell’orrore. L’autrice ha adottato infatti un espediente molto interessante che ci permette di assistere alla nascita di un vero e proprio serial killer, inserendo durante la narrazione qualche capitolo intitolato “Vita col padre” che ci fa assistere orripilati alla trasformazione di un bambino innocente, a cui hanno tolto l’infanzia, in un adolescente feroce e vendicativo, per poi vederlo inabissarsi in una lucida, tremenda follia perseguendo il suo oscuro obiettivo. È quel bambino infatti che tenteremo in ogni modo di associare ad uno dei personaggi che incontreremo durante la lettura, ma anche in questo l’autrice è stata molto brava, lasciandoci indizi che sembrano adattarsi a molti di loro, ma vi assicuro che difficilmente vi verrà mai in mente di sospettare la sconvolgente verità. Se dovremo aspettare parecchio per scoprire il passato di Claire, ben presto ci verranno fatte rivelazioni importanti sul ricco e bellissimo Nicholas Black, psicologo, scrittore, affarista, una sorta di Re Mida che cura ricchi e famosi clienti dalle loro dipendenze e che la nostra protagonista non potrà fare a meno di detestare fin dal primo incontro, nonostante non possa impedirsi di trovarlo estremamente seducente.

La parte suspense è davvero intrigante, passiamo dall’indagine presente ai ricordi di quello che per tutta l’infanzia si è sempre sentito chiamare Moccioso, così tanto, che in alcuni momenti della sua vita ha perfino stentato a ricordare il suo vero nome, scoprendo pian piano tutta la tremenda catena di delitti che nessuno ha mai collegato, per giungere a un finale sconcertante ed adrenalinico. Testa a testa è un libro che mi è piaciuto moltissimo, che non sono riuscita a chiudere sino alla parola fine presa dal desiderio di scoprire la verità; una serie che sicuramente continuerò a seguire con grande interesse. L’unica pecca che gli impedisce di avere il massimo è l’aver voluto calcare troppo su alcune atmosfere da cinema horror (un esempio, la visita nella palude, per non parlare dell’orribile festa a sorpresa per Claire) che non erano neppure necessarie alla storia, già abbastanza angosciante di suo, specialmente nel finale.

Spero davvero che questa serie venga proposta nella sua interezza dato che il personaggio di Claire è assolutamente stupendo e questa serie comprende già ben 10 libri ed altrettante indagini su crimini efferati; sono già in attesa di scoprire il prossimo, orribile e fantasioso modo, in cui quest’autrice farà morire le sue vittime. Dopo averlo finito infatti, leggete il titolo, e vi accorgerete di quanto sia ironico e macabro allo stesso tempo.

I knew there was a reason I gave up reading novels about serial killers. You have to wade through pages of horrific child abuse masquerading as literature only to get to a ridiculous ending which features the killer living right under the noses of 2 police officers the entire time.

The reader is supposed to believe that the killer is irrevocably damaged and sick and yet also buy into the fact that the killer can hold a job and act like a healthy human being capable of normal social interactions.

Um...no. I spotted the killer halfway through and the gender bending surprise didn't really surprise me.

"Head to Head" did a good job at getting me to turn the pages ...and that's about it. I won't be checking out any more titles in this series.

I had previously read book #8 in this series and loved it so much that I decided to go back and read the series from the beginning. Fortunately, I already had this book on my Kindle, so I dove right in. Am I sorry? Heck, no! This book is every bit as good as #8. Linda Ladd is consistent in her character development and plot line. This is a creepy book, but I learned so much about Claire's early years and history with Black that I simply could not put this book down! I will be heading into her second in the series very soon. Highly recommended!

Grande ritorno sulla scena mondiale, dopo ben 10 anni, di Linda Ladd con il libro Testa a testa, un thriller adrenalinico dal costrutto perfetto che vi terrà incollati alle pagine.

La storia si snoda attraverso due racconti paralleli che forniscono man mano i dettagli per risolvere il rebus e convergono verso il coinvolgente finale. Benché il colpevole sia abbastanza intuibile, la bellezza sta nel capire la motivazione dietro i gesti: l’autrice costruisce una trama intricata, senza perdere mai il filo, svelando poco a poco dettagli che aiutano a mettere insieme i pezzi, fino ad arrivare all’adrenalinica scena finale.

Probabilmente la storia può risultare un po’ forzata, ma la Ladd è brava nel mantenere i toni bassi; non esaspera i dialoghi e le descrizioni, fornendo così il giusto contributo senza annoiare.

Inoltre c’è una componente romance che alleggerisce l’atmosfera tesa e distoglie l’attenzione dalle indagini, rendendo più sorprendenti gli sviluppi della storia.

"Non era poi così male, in fondo, e poi c’era ancora il problema dell’attrazione, anche se stavo gettando acqua sul fuoco. Si trattava di quello strano tipo d’intesa che faceva battere forte il cuore quando l’altro entrava nella stanza e ti faceva fremere le dita dalla voglia di toccarlo.

La protagonista, Claire Morgan, è una donna messa a dura prova dalla vita e lo si intuisce dal modo in cui schiva le domande personali. Cerca di passare il più possibile inosservata (come biasimarla!) e nasconde bellezza, caparbietà e grande volontà.

Il racconto è inframezzato da suoi “commenti personali”, brevi ma incisivi, che sottolineano il proprio atteggiamento in maniera ironica, contribuendo così a sostenere il ritmo narrativo.

I read this book when I was like 12/13…I would not recommend this to anyone under 20 lol…actually even if you are over 20 you need to have a strong stomach.

The way the two plotlines start matching up blew my mind and the twist at the end really caught me off guard.

However the gruesome details and (child) abuse depicted in this book is really not for everyone.

Okay, so first off, I devoured this book. It was a rollercoaster and a half. My next read will have to be something light after this.

That said, I gave it four stars because it was very disturbing but also a bit obvious. I guessed the killer in the first third of the book. That isn't necessarily a bad thing as it adds to the suspense but I was not surprised.

Also, if this book has been written in the mid nineties, the ending wouldn't be surprising at all. It was written in 2006. However, the author's use of the word "she-male" to describe someone who was forcibly made to present femme by a cruel father wasn't okay. The gender non-conforming community has enough issues without having terms like that just thrown around.

It was a good read. I did have some personal issues with it, but I don't regret reading it. I may not read the rest, though.

Edited to add: as another reviewer stated, Ladd had an annoying habit of using the "The Polite Officer" or "I'm just sarcastic like that" phrases to death and it got very old, very fast.

Un killer spietato, una detective determinata, due passati diversi, un unico presente.

Claire Morgan approda nel Missouri dopo aver lavorato come detective della omicidi a Los Angeles. La tranquillità del luogo viene però sconvolta da un omicidio tanto efferato quanto inspiegabile e starà proprio a lei il compito di indagare al riguardo.

Claire è una di quelle protagoniste le cui sfaccettature ci vengono svelate piano piano nel corso della storia, quando si pensa di aver capito qualcosa di lei, ecco arrivare un altro aspetto. Tutto questo la rende un personaggio credibile, al quale ci si avvicina profondamente e per la quale si prova rispetto.

Claire è sarcastica, pungente, tutta d'un pezzo, difende le sue idee anche se a volte sono fuorviate da pregiudizi che le scaturiscono da un passato non facile. È anche una professionista dotata di grande intuito, pronta a rischiare in prima persona. Claire ha una faccia da dura, ma in realtà nasconde una grande fragilità. Leggendo scopriremo cosa le è accaduto, i motivi che l'hanno portata a chiudersi in sé stessa e verso i sentimenti.

Quando inizia a indagare sull'omicidio avvenuto nel resort di proprietà di Nicholas Black le sue certezze iniziano lentamente a sgretolarsi e quello che sembrava solo un caso complicato si trasforma in qualcosa di molto più personale.

Nicholas Black è un uomo carismatico, affascinante, abituato a ottenere facilmente ciò che desidera. Un facile bersaglio per i sospetti di Claire, ma anche lui ha i suoi oscuri segreti che lo spingono ad avere alcuni comportamenti.

Mentre le indagini vanno avanti il legame tra Nick e Claire si trasforma in qualcosa di diverso, l'attrazione è innegabile, ma il passato è sempre pronto a fare il suo ingresso e forse Claire non è pronta ancora pronta a lasciarsi andare e aiutare, anche se Nick non è sicuramente un uomo che rinuncia facilmente.

Chi è l'assassino? Quale significato ha il suo modus operandi? Claire sarà in grado di scoprire la realtà prima che sia davvero troppo tardi?

Linda Ladd ha creato una storia intricata, ricca di colpi di scena, che ti avvolge e ti impedisce di abbandonare il libro fino all'epilogo. Lo stile narrativo...

OMG talk about gruesome! Half of this book was the disturbing life story of the killer and the other half the police investigation. The killer's story was so unsettling that I found myself skipping parts of it because it just turned my stomach to know what was done to him. Eventhough you sort of know who the killer is (he's called Brat - as in you're such a brat - through the whole book), the ending is such a shock, I actually said "no way" when I got that far. This book will seriously mess with your head.

Claire, the cop, reminds me of Eve Dallas (of J.D. Robb's In Death series) with her brusk attitude and disturbed past. I really enjoyed Claire and Nick Black's interactions. Nick Black is the psychiatrist at the high-end spa (drug rehab place) where the first murder takes place.

If you haven't tried this author and like mind-blowing psychological suspense, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. I think Linda Ladd's right up their with Keith Ablow, another great psychological suspense author.

This is actually the first book in the series, followed by Enter Evil - another spectacular read.

Claire is a cop who has left LA to live in a quiet Ozark small town. When there is a horrifying ritualistic murder of a soap opera star at a local resort, she has no idea how bizarre it will get.

I really enjoyed the suspense in this book and the dynamics of the characters. Not to mention the back story on Claire.

I accidently took a bit of the pleasure out though, because when flipping to the back to see how many pages I had left at one point, I saw a chapter heading that gave it all away for me. So of course, I picked up on clues I might not otherwise have done and went from a whodunit to a why? But that's okay, it still engrossed me and satisfied me.

Definitely want to read more in this series.

Loved it, I normally review a lot of books and I don't get to sit down and truly enjoy a book I want to read very often. This one was well crafted and the chemistry between Claire and Black is off the charts. A couple of weeks ago I was gifted a book five or six in this series and it did really well. Well enough that I wanted to start over. At the volume of books I can read I can tell you that this doesn't happen very often and I was very happy with the first book enough to continue to the second. Kudos to this author for a well crafted book. Overall entertainment at the best. Five stars.

This book was a mix of soft porn and horror with unlikable cardboard characters. I skipped more than half of it but did finish it. The ending has Claire/Annie ,who has had everyone she ever cared about , including her infant son, killed by a nut case, living happily ever after with the dashing, rich hero. Also the ending implies that the nut case will probably return in another book to terrify
Claire/Annie but I'm sure she'll defeat him with her wise cracks. I think I'll pass that one and any other books by Ms Ladd.

My first book by this author. Claire Morgan is a police detective working a gruesome case in the Ozarks. Lots of events happen in this book and the author kept me guessing pretty much the whole time as to who the killer was. There were a few lows in the book where I felt the story dragged a bit but all in all I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books by this author.

Another nook Free Friday. I don't know why I download them!
Well, there is certainly "no resemblance to any person, living or dead" here and I am sure that "all names, places and incidents are products of the author's [lurid] imagination".
It's a wacky police procedural set in the Ozarks interwoven with the gruesome life story of the killer.

Nice easy suspense thriller. Claire is an officer with a past that she has thought to escaped. But a murder in her town that is so despicable, ends up opening a full can of worms. With a murder of an actress at a resort that Dr Black has, brings him into the case and also finds that him and Claire share more than the murder.

A great page-turner that not only keeps you guessing, but also makes you want to read more from Ladd. I wish my library carried the rest of the series:
