Iris (real name Iris Davies) was born in Mumbles and lived in Derwen Fawr, a part of Sketty, Swansea. She had four adult children, though her husband of 48 years, Tudor Davies, died on 15 April 2002 after suffering a major stroke. She later lived with a partner, Peter.
She was one of the top-selling authors in the country, and was awarded an MA in Creative Writing by Cardiff University, as well as an Honorary Fellowship at the University of Wales, Swansea. She wrote and published around 40 books including 26 novels.
Gower died at Singleton Hospital, Swansea on 20 July, 2010. She was 75 years old.

DNF-ed at page 188
Why?
- Too many cases of telling not showing.
- Cliched dialogues.
- Flat cardboard characters.
- Insta-love.
- Nothing interesting happens even after I crossed 100 pages.

I was a bit disappointed as the affair between the central characters took centre stage. I chose it as I thought it was principally about the Rebecca Riots & the need to establish justice in an unfair system.
However there was character, plot, conflict & the novel went at a cracking pace.
Iris Gower explored double standards within the context of the end of the Victorian period. It was set in the potteries in Swansea & partially in Llanelli.
It was considered acceptable for a man to take another sexual partner within marriage but totally frowned on when a woman committed adult Ray
The theme of ingratitude
Harshness and judgement versus loving kindness.
Various types of love, romantic love which is slushy & sensuous & acting lovingly, agape love which wethers the storms of life.
I found it compelling & gripping but in the end there were inconsistencies.

There were some good characters on shanni, dafydd, Joe and llynos. I enjoyed the story being set in South Wales, and seeing the Welsh language in the book reminded me of my grandad so much that it gave a nice familiarity to the story for me.

Wow, what an ending! This book was far better than I expected it to be. I liked Llinos best, I found Shanni irritating and childish and I liked the rivalry between Dafydd and Joe.
