See my full review here. This is an out-of-print but still worth finding cookbook that offers an excellent range of easy to make and easy to keep holiday cookies. I tried two in the book - instructions were excellent, and both tasted great, through the yield was off significantly. The thumbprints recipe promised 64 cookies and it made 36, and the chocolate krinkles, said to make 80, gave me 56. All were normal sized, too. As it was for a bake sale, I even weighed the krinkles - they were 19g each before going into the oven. Still, the collection of 75 recipes is a good one, with a lot of old standbys like gingerbread people and holiday biscotti, as well as interesting new ideas like the meringue mushrooms from France. Each recipe includes a colour photo, ingredient list, and step-by-step directions that seem clear and easy enough for even beginner cooks to follow. But as it’s a field guide, Wilson has included fascinating additional information on the type (rolled, drop, etc.) of cookie, its country of origin, a description of how it looks and tastes, “field notes” on the origin of the cookie’s development, and a quick comment on how long they keep. Thanks to the Grand Forks (B.C.) and District Public Library for including and keeping this title in its nonfiction collection.
This is an excellent resource for old and new favorites. The recipes are easy to follow and we’ve had great success with them. Also love the pictures are included for every cookie, which display well on my Kindle.
I got this book from the library to use over the past holiday season, and it has so many great cookie recipes in it that I'm going to buy it so that we have it on hand for the coming year.
There are recipes for basic, traditional Christmas cookies (sugar cookies, gingerbread), as well as more unusual ones (night before Christmas mice, candy cane cookies). The recipes are also marked so that you can easily tell which ones are easy to make with kids, which are quick to prepare, and which freeze well.
I'm looking forward to using this book again - there are many recipes that are appropriate year-round, as well as for the next holiday season.
This is an excellent book filled with helpful tips, contextual insights and easy to follow directions too. I picked this up as a 'Daily Find' from B&N for $1.99. What a bargain.
I noted quite a few complaints about the e-book version, but they turned out to be unfounded - at least on my nook tablet - however, there are a couple of glitches that are easy to get around. This book is well worth the investment.
The Sicilian White Cookies (Pastine Bianche)are delicious and easy to make.
