Rate this book
It's a stress makes you fat. Renowned clinician and scientist Dr. Pamela Peeke goes beyond diet and exercise with a lifestyle program that shows women how to stop being diet "POWs" ("Prisoners Of Weight") or victims of "Toxic Stress" and how to evolve into physically and mentally stress-resilient individuals. Peeke helps women identify their stress-eating profiles (Are you a stress-overeater? A stress-undereater?) and explains that to remove weight, you have to lift weight. She explains what to eat and, equally as important, when to eat by navigating the afternoon "CortiZone," the hours of highest vulnerability to stress eating. Learn how to put it all together through the fine art of regrouping.

Women can tailor this accessible program to their individual needs using Peeke's three behavior

* Stress-resilient nutrition
* Stress-resilient physical activity
* Stress-resilient regrouping

Dr. Peeke's program is a must for women who want to break the stress-fat cycle that has thickened their after-forty waistlines.

The money quote: "If you've been winging your diet up to this point, the winging is over. You have to pay attention to what, how much, and how often you eat. Period."
That addresses a certain denial in my life about my age and changing metabolism. I related to the sections about stress eating for sure. Listened to this as an audio book; ordered a print copy so I can better see the eating guidelines.

This outlined the way stress affects our hormone levels and thus not only affects our behaviors, but determines where the fat on our body collects and how much/what kind of fat: the toxic kind.

I found the book truly amazing, as it really clearly taught me what is going on inside my body. I was glad for her medical approach and explanations.

This is my favorite book of the three done by Dr. Peeke. Bravo. Succint and the exact slant on the info. I needed to teach and motivate me.

I kindof skipped over her weight-lifting chapter at the back, as I'm already comfortable with what I'm doing, but the ideas for meals and portions really gave me a clearer picture of what I should do to care for myself. The concept of the inverted food pyramid really clicked with me.

I really enjoyed this authors take on living a healthy lifestyle and losing and or maintaining healthy weight into your 40s and beyond. I also like the way she talked about Cortizone and all the science things behind her pouches and having plan a and Plan B because that was very realistic in my opinion and to help as to how we eat in real life. I would definitely read something else by this author.

This started out pretty good, and I liked the emphasis on stress reduction, but then it kind of veered off into vagueness and didn't tell me exactly what to DO, especially since I've been exercising and eating pretty well for a while and still have 10ish pounds I need to figure out how to get rid of.

I don't really need to lose weight, but I did notice that my body was changing at 40 and I wanted to understand why and how it was changing. I also have a high stress job, and noticed that it was impacting me a lot in terms of how and when I was eating. This book helped me to see patterns and understand why my body was making the demands that it was. I feel more confident that I understand how and why my body is changing as I age because of this book.

I read the 2000 version and the food info was, um, dated. :-)
However, if you know more about food and what is good for you now, you'll love this book. Pamela Peeke explained so much of what I've been doing wrong. Accepting the fact that I need less calories despite increased exercise was crucial for me. And her admonition to taste and savor instead of eating the whole thing is excellent.

Women 40 and over cannot eat the same as they did in their 20s. Dr. Peeke explains why that is and how to take back control of your body. Very helpful book.

I loved this book! Written by a doctor, author Pamela Peeke goes deeper than simply telling you to cut calories and exercise. She explains the way the body functions, and changes after 40, and how exercise and dietary choices affect it all. She goes deeply into stress and its affects -- not just the daily stress of deadlines and tragedies, but also the lifestyle stress we live with and don't always acknowledge. Explaining how all this affects the different hormones within our bodies, she offers solutions and her reasoning behind it, tempering her recommendations by age level and diseases you may already know you have.

Best of all for me -- she doesn't advocate cutting out entire food groups! Instead, she encourages you to find you favorite treat and eat it wisely, without guilt. Yes, she talks about good nutrition and adequate vitamins, and yes, she talks about exercise and weight training. But she's also realistic with busy and/or sedentary women. While she encourages the best, she explains what doing nothing truly costs, and advocates that something is better than nothing. I found many of the changes she recommends easy to adapt to my lifestyle. While I am partially overwhelmed with the volume of information she poured into this book, I took away a lot of great information and am confident that it will help me to become healthier.

IF you are worried about stress and are middle-aged, this book is for you. Chock full of very concrete medical and nutritional facts about how stress on the body is soooooo bad for you as you age. Very scary. Layout of the book is very accessible and contains helpful lists and charts. Personally, I would have liked a get-to-the-point cheat sheet so I could avoid the information that I already knew re: the evils of carbs, sugar, alcohol, etc., but I did appreciate the specific information about stress, menopause and aging. As well, the book provides sample diet menus, and exercise plans.

This book is one that will stay on my shelf for continual future reference. The science is readable and understandable. The eating plans are realistic as are the exercise ideas. Having a plan A and plan B is also very beneficial. For once, after reading a book on health and weight, I really feel like Peeke's lifestyle on losing and keeping off the menopot is possible!
