Smith’s account is incredibly well-written and vivid. I had initially acquired this book for a course project from the library, and kept reading it after I had completed the project. Safe to say it totally hooked me. Smith balanced the atrocities he witnessed with light hearted stories and humor. Though I do wonder the extent he had to censor himself—there are numerous times he hints at opinions that may have been difficult for him to share directly. He describes the strict censorship in Russia, and I wonder if he faced that of a different kind in America?
