Nostrils is making a modest living writing police fiction; often reminiscing about his early years in the job. While attending the funeral of the late Queen, he accepts an opportunity to serve his country for one final time and the retired detective sets off to New York. As winter bites, Nostrils becomes increasingly addicted to heroin and ever more distanced from his loving family. Just when he believes his task is complete, destiny delivers to him the most brutal of choices.
Warning: What follows does NOT do justice to this book, the last of Jonathan's Cox's fantastic series about Met Police Officer Christopher Pritchard. In many ways, this is the best book of the series, albeit I said that about each of the previous seven books. This book wraps everything up and shows the true nature of its hero. Not to give away the story, but I read this last book over a day and a half - more or less - non-stop. Each of Jonathan Cox's books in the series is compelling in their own way. They are difficult to put down. This last book was impossible to stop reading - particularly the last 1/3 where the action rises to breakneck speed. Mr. Cox has jumped to the top of my favorite author's list. I anxiously await more from his pen. In sum, I've avoided giving away anything plot-wise in this book. BUT, if you're a fan of police procedurals, particularly European ones, THIS is the series you MUST read! And make sure you start with the first book, "From Green to Blue".
I really can't write a review. So many mixed emotions. The Nostrils Series are a must-read in order. Was so disappointed when I thought number 7 was the last. Number 8! Wow. I stayed up to the wee hours reading it. Gives me the chills to think any part of this could happen. It was hard at first going through the different times, past and present but once I got in I couldn't put it down. Don't want to give anything away but a very interesting book. Nostril had quite the life-real or not, very-interesting insight into being a copper. Nostrils enjoy retirement, I will miss you.
Another excellent read, well worth the wait. Nostrils does it again. A bit dark in places but also humours at times. Nice to be reminded of past books and characters. And the connections with the new characters from Chris past life in the job. The ending was sad and reflective but I think was just right. Hopefully Jonathan Cox,s will write more books perhaps about Dawn and Mrs M as I am sure theirs a good story their to tell.
Humour, terror, adventure, and humility this tale has it all.
I love the way this story weaves the anecdotal stories from the authors career with a bang up to date story of international espionage.
I hope there are more Nostrils stories in the pipeline, especially if we go back in time to his life in the Job!! Chris Pritchard is like a flawed old friend whose heart is firmly in the right place with an unerring sense of duty.
A great read, well worth the wait. Nostrils does it again. I really enjoyed the change of scene, obviously Jon knows New York well, although he should be more selective about where he goes for a sauna.
Highly recommended. Nostrils, must surely return as an established secret service agent maybe this time running his own team of agents. Nostrils for the big screens.
I really got involved with Christopher Pritchard in these stories and feel a little sad there'll be no more. He really came a toss as a very decent human being despite all the trials and tribulations in his life. A truly literary hero
I’ve read all 7 previous books on the Nostrils series, and I can honestly say book number 8 was absolutely amazing, it had every aspect of a good story line you need to make it unputdownable. 📖👍
I hardly write reviews for books. The Nostrils series of books are excellent are some of the best books i have read. Well written easy to read. Get them
Well it’s over. My journey with Nostrils is finally at an end. I put off reading this last book in the series as long as possible and where I would normally have polished it off within 48 Hours I really stretched it out. What a brilliant series Jonathan Cox. You’ve made me laugh and cry along the way. I certainly shed a tear at the end of Never Yield. Thank you!
Have loved every one of this series of books...but this one has been my favourite. I look forward to hearing more of what becomes of Nostrils in the next book. Very well written and fabulous story as always from this author.
I’ve read all eight of these books and they have all been ,hard to put down,as each one takes you on different journey . Enjoyed my journey and look forward to any more coming in the future .
Jonathan, Jon, Coxsy - you cannot leave it there! We (in our thousands, not just ex-Old Bill) have followed Christopher 'Nostrils' Pritchard (very welsh name incidentally) from his infancy in the Met with Dawn as his tutor constable all the way through his Stoke Newington, Tottenham and CIB adventures and nightmares to his retirement. We've seen his lust for justice, his heroin addiction and his lust for life bringing him back from the brink of death. There are very few books that I can read in a few days, but these have been some of them. You cannot leave it there. How about doing a Lynda La Plante and have a prelude - what did he do in the Army, how was his childhood?
Finished this book today 5*/5* absolutely fantastic, quite a bit different to the previous 7 books as they are based around 'Police Procedural' This is more of a spy novel, mixed with semi autobiographical details. There is quite a few chapters which go back to the previous 7 books. Gripping, gritty, brilliant storyline.. didnt pan out how i expected, especially the last 5 or 6 chapters. Keep up the good work 'Nostrils'
