Hailey Hearst has been abducted. She's taken from her home and brought to a derelict apartment on 84th Street--a place notorious for violence, drug running. and horror! Hailey is given as a gift to a rising gangster. A fiend named Raleigh Smyth, whose tastes range from cruel to sadistic! But, all is not lost. On the night of Hailey's abduction, a killer-for-hire approaches the building. Jaffe Whitlock's goal is simple... Clean up 84th Street AND LEAVE NO WITNESSES
This is an extreme book. It features graphic violence, gore, and offensive themes.
Straight for the jugular. That's how Sonnet writes. No flowery language, no dancing around the carnage, just straight ahead, no holds barred, brutality. The carnage flows both with her easy to read prose and the wet subject matter.
Well all I got to say is hell yeah... This book the characters the setting the MOTHER FUCKING CARNAGE. This book rules it just makes me want to watch old grind house movies. This book is straight up a extreme pulp crime novel were violence, bone fragments, blood splatter, and revenge are aplenty. I highly recommend this one its awesome and I can't wait to read the other books in this series cuz the bar had been set by Ms Sonnet and it was set damn high fucking cool read.
Carnage on 84th Street is absolute carnage and totally worthy of the “Splatter Crimes” banner. This novella is bleak, brutal, and blood drenched…which, at this point, shouldn’t come as a surprise at all since this was penned by the always nasty (I say that in a good way, by the way) and extreme Judith Sonnet who somehow always manages to up the ante with her books.
Though she skips the horror and replaces it with crime, there is no doubt this one is “extreme”. Obviously this one is offensive, gory, and one of the most mean spirited of Judith’s works I’ve read so far (which I know is saying something), but somewhere between the bullet riddled corpses, the nasty characters, and the sprayed viscera on damn near every page, there is still a great story buried beneath and gives more proof that Sonnet’s talents continue to grow, no matter the genre she decides to write in.
Oh, I absolutely LOVED this book by Judith Sonnet!
This was an extremely fun read, a gangster story with a splatter twist. There was a specific character, the murder-for-hire, that I enjoyed so much. He was hilarious and was rooting for him the whole time. As expected from Judith, there is plenty of graphic and gut-wrenching writing!
This right here was fantastic. In your face mayhem and carnage! Everything from the atmosphere to the gore and straight messed up scenes were gut punching and full throttle. If you're a splatterpunk fan, this is a must read! Thanks for an awesome time Ms Sonnet!! Will definitely not be my last rodeo!
Didn’t dislike this book, but I’m not gonna rate it. I’ve found that I honestly prefer straightforward horror (extreme or otherwise) to violent crime novels (especially ones with tons of gun violence… I prefer my gore to be more personal & sadistic. Gun violence is too quick & puts too much distance between killer and victim… so I tend to feel nothing when I read about it…)
I think this one was a load of pretty sick fun, with a side of too much for me. This is the first I've read by Sonnet. I know she's an extreme horror writer, so I knew it was gonna be fucked up. I liked the twists the novella took and I did enjoy the pacing and Sonnet's characterizations throughout. I really freaking hated some of these monsters. Proof that she nailed it. That said, I'm not quite as extreme when it comes to some of the stuff in here and a few scenes had me cringing (as I know they;re supposed to do).
Overall, I enjoyed the book. I was gonna go 3.5, but I'll round it up to a 4!
Definitely will tread lightly into more of her work.
If you like your crime novels brutal and extreme check out this novella. Very different than any crime novel I've read. The setting is the 70's, and 84th street is filled with degenerates.
I’ve been really lucky this year with finding new authors that I’ve absolutely loved and one of those is Judith Sonnet. I’ve actually started a collection of her books.
If you’ve read any of her books you know what to expect. They’re dark, they’re gory, they’re disgusting and they’re absolutely brilliant. If you’re a fan of extreme horror I’d definitely recommend giving them a go. She comes up with things you’d never think of in a million years.
Although this is a short novella you feel an attachment to the characters and their stories. The action hits from the get go and believe me when I say that you’ll read through this one very quickly. I was so happy with the ending and I can’t wait to see what Judith and her beautifully twisted mind will bring us next.
I also discovered that it’s maybe not a good idea to relay some parts of this book to certain friends as they will be horrified.
Carnage on 84th Street delivers just that in a reverential package of Rape-Revenge, Seventies grimy crime, and the decrepit ambience of inner cities before gentrification. Gut churning set pieces, on point characters resurrected from films of the time, and well paced plotting all mark this as a smashing success. Do yourself a favor and read the afterward. Rarely do authors share their reflections on inspiration and process. Sonnet’s is enlightening and inspirational. Obviously not for everyone, and that’s just fine with me. Sonnet has definitely done the homework, and it delivers a kick ass memory of cinema of a past time. You want to visit the Grindhouse? Buy and read this book!
This was 124 pages of the worst and most depraved of humanity. I really enjoy seeing how far she can go in such a short book. She has never disappointed.
Judith Sonnet is such a force of talent. This book has exemplary charater builds ,anxiety fueled page turning , and just amazing storytelling, all done in 130 pages. The Noir feel of this book brings it beyond the splatter punk gore to a must-read for anyone who wants a great story in a compact time allotment. Well done, Ms. Sonnet Well done.
Even tho it wasn’t very long, I had so much fun with Judith Sonnet’s Carnage on 84th St that I ended up finishing it in a day. Now that’s it’s over, I want more. 😫 Luckily there’s still one more SplatterCrimes book in the series I get to read, so at least I have that.
Quick Synopsis: 84th Street is where the corrupt, poor, vile masses gather. ROUGH neighborhood doesn’t begin to describe it. It’s so bad that a hired mercenary is sent to “clean it up.” At the same time, it just so happens, Hailey Hearst is taken there against her will. Now she has to fight to stay alive, do some cleaning of her own & try not to get thrown out with the bath water.
I’m a fan of the exploitation films of yore. Heads exploding, knife jugg’in, junkie-yeeting…all in painfully tight polyester. I love it and Sonnet delivered it all on a blood-soaked platter. Yes Eminem, I do like violence. I’m a cheap date. Give me an ending with a surprisingly poignant use of a razor-blade & I’m happy. It was also interesting to read how the SplatterCrime novels came about…but I need more. Lots more. Please!
p.s. “junkie-yeeting” just got added to my list of offenses that I’ll have to answer for @ the pearly gates.
Are you ready for the carnage that Sonnet is about to deliver? I'm not sure you are, but it's gonna be one helluva ride either way. Sonnet delivers an excellent story with her trademark splatter writing style. If you are a fan of her other works, this one doesn't disappoint. Is it horror? No. But that doesn't matter because Sonnet's excellent writing style is splattered all over it. (See what I did there?) Not to mention the twist at the end! I didn't see it coming, and I loved it. And I loved the ending. It was abrupt, and I usually nitpick at that, but the way this was written was perfect for this story. Definitely give this a read.
So great, Judith writes like a seasoned pro and her books are a blast. They are also ruthless and gory and nightmare inducing. She is a natural writer and doesn't make any of the common mistakes you see with a lot of newer indie authors. No words wasted and she is great at showing instead of telling. This is a blood streaked, grimey, set in 70's hell quick little thrill ride that you need to read!
It was a lot of fun to read a crime book full of violence. I was even hoping one of the characters would be held back from doing one awful thing in particular involving salt. I was disappointed, however, to read in the afterword that Sonnet, Otis Bateman, and Brian Berry were only planning on one book each under this banner. It'd be great to see a whole line similar to the Splatter Westerns. Maybe someday.
Nurse Hailey was just enjoying a quiet night in when she was abducted to be the plaything of deranged drug dealer, Raleigh Smyth, at his playpen of perversity, a derelict apartment block called, Decdale Place. Jaffe is a killer hired by corrupt cops to clear out Decdale Place and every living thing in it. Tonight their paths will collide in a gore soaked rampage that would make even the Devil blanche.
Another brutal and beautifully written 10 day challenge piece by Ms. Sonnet. This author has such a keen ability to describe scenarios that most should never hope to see and endure and make you feel like a fly on the wall watching it all. The realism of this one cannot be understated, and a theme I’m noticing in her works thus far (2 in) is the victim always gets theirs, and delivers a hell of a punchline. On to the next!
Fast paced, extremely gory. An assassin hired to clean up the derelicts of the streets drug dealers, junkies, and hookers. And you have Hailey a nurse who got kidnapped and brought into this carnage.
I want to see Hailey in Savage on 84th Street! <--- Not a real book title but I want to see more of her character! This is the first book I read in the Splatter Crimes and I really liked it. Jaffe was a beast.
This one’s fast, brutal, and I absolutely loved it. I'm a huge Sonnet fan, and this one now ranks among my favorites. Highly recommended to all fans of vivid, extreme fiction!
