The fourth adventure in a Mountain Man series from Ash Lingam!
When three buffalo hunters encroach on the mountain and valleys near Rusty and Angus’s cabins, they take potshots at Sioux hunters to run them off their buffalo herd. They stood all day killing one dumb beast after another until the valley floor was red with blood and carcasses. They took the food out of the mouths of the Indians that had lived there for ten thousand years.
In the compound, the mountain men prepare for the coming winter. Ex-Captain Bill Forrester is still trying to wrap his mind around the loss of an arm. As he comes to grips with what happened, a new man emerges from the ashes, much like the Phoenix.
Levi Beaver Johnson has proven he is as skilled as his fellow mountain men and gobbled up all he could learn from his peers. He was already a better pathfinder and sharpshooter than the rest. He and Bill settle down in their new home, Rusty Steel’s cabin. But what they had expected to be a quiet life in the wilderness turns out to be anything but tranquil.
Ash Lingam was born and raised in Southern Ohio, not far from the mighty Ohio River. He had somewhat of an isolated upbringing on a family farm with his sisters. His best friends were his horse, Sugar, and his grandfather. Born in 1886, the family patriarch grew crops, raised cattle, and doted on the young boy. At his grandfather’s side, Ash learned about livestock and firearms at an early age. His grandad carried an old Colt with him at all times, helping spawn a young boy’s dreams of yesteryear. Ash was only eight years old when his grandad taught him how to trap muskrats to prevent them from draining the farm’s ponds. He gave him a double-barreled shotgun at twelve and taught him how to hunt to put food on the table. It wasn’t long before Ash was breaking horses. His spirited Tennessee Walker never allowed any other rider on her back. Together, they searched through the plowed fields in the spring, looking for Miami Indian arrowheads to add to his grandfather’s ample collection. Ash’s family was among the early settlers in pre-Revolutionary America. He has traced his lineage back to around 1746 when his ancestors immigrated from Europe to the aspiring American Colonies. A retired marketing executive, Ash devotes his spare time to training police dogs and writing novels. He has found his niche in the Western, historical fiction, and adventure genres. With his vast vault of experience, he never runs out of sources for new stories. He has lived in eleven different countries and worked in a total of forty-six, To date, Ash has written approximately 130 novels, short stories, and poems. More than one hundred of his eclectic titles help the American frontier come alive for his readers.
The story seemed somewhat disjointed. I felt, for the most part, that the writing, in places seemed decent and in other places seemed rather confusing. I don't much care for it when I have to reread a sentence more than once to be able to understand the message it was intended to convey.
The ending left much to be desired. It seemed as if the writer simply got tired and just decided to quit at that point.
Over all, this "book" has me thinking that the author really had no idea of where they were headed with this story and was simply putting words down on paper hoping to eventually arrive at an acceptable conclusion.
Newcomers to America seeking peace and prosperity, struggle from the beginning as to who will be supreme? Native Americans were ancestors of this great continent but culturally not adept to change? Mankind struggles throughout history with avarice, greed, looking over the proverbial fence to better themselves, not realizing that all should but can’t, live in peace and harmony for mankind as a whole!!! To this day mankind struggles for supremacy at any cost!!!
I gave this book a five star rating because , I think you wrote truth in the buffalo killers , that were sent to kill off the native Americans . History , even in fiction is most often told with a slant . Today America is having a hard time with truth
This was a well written mountain man story with lots of action. Devious buffalo hunters invade the land of the Sioux and the Crow and end up paying the ultimate price. I'll be reading more of Lingam's stories and would definitely recommend this one!
This is a good book about a young hunter/trapper frog the East who moved west to find adventure, and hopefully become a Mountain Man. As luck would have it he met the right men, and under their training he became a good Mountain Man.
Book 4 of the Levi Johnson series has the mountain men facing trouble from the Grimms brothers. Buffalo hunters who has both the Sioux and Crow Indians stirred up.
