Forever After Retellings #2

The Captain and Miss Winter

Rate this book
A captain seeking to repair the past and the daughter of a fallen gentleman, searching for a treasure that will change their lives forever.

The end of the Napoleonic wars comes as a relief to Caspar Graysmark, but before he can settle into the comfortable life of an English lord he has a duty to the people of France. A treasure lies hidden in the heart of the forest, stolen gold that would save the lives of many who lost everything during the war. In his quest, Caspar stumbles across a hidden cottage in the woods, and a different sort of treasure altogether.

Scarlett, living with her sister and grandmother, belongs nowhere. Her father’s mistakes led to their exile from England and their banishment into the forest. The cold winter months have taken their toll on Scarlett’s spirits and her grandmother’s health. The Englishman who arrives at Scarlett’s door, looking more like a bear than a captain of the British army, reminds her of all she lost to the war.

With winter drawing to a close, Caspar must find the missing gold, but his quest to right the wrongs of war has changed. Can Scarlett let him rescue her, too?

The Captain and Miss Winter is based on the story of Snow White and Rose Red, as recorded by the Brothers Grimm. It is a sweet/clean romance novella, and is Book 2 in a series of Regency retellings. The stories can be read in any order.

Not as cute as the first book but still nice.

This author usually gets four stars from me, this time it’s closer to 3,5. I’m not sure what kind of retelling it was supposed to be, because it didn’t really resemble anything, but it was okay.

Scarlett lives in France, in a small cottage in the woods, with her grandmother and sister. Caspar is an English earl, currently looking for a hidden treasure in said woods (he wants to give it away, so maybe it’s a Robin Hood retelling?). He finds shelter in the cottage during a snowstorm and falls in love with Scarlett.

This book didn’t make me feel much but I’ve had this problem with other books from this author too. They are nice but just too clean for me; there’s never enough chemistry between the MCs and even though the writing is good and I enjoy the story, I can’t ever really love it.

I never knew that Snow White and Red Rose was its own…interesting story. I thought it was connected to the classic Snow White story, but it’s actually a different one and not too bad compared to the usual Brothers Grimm fairytales. 😅

A little too kissy/attraction based for my tastes, but that’s to be expected with the forced proximity trope. Probably my least favorite of the series, but it wasn’t bad. Just not one I really liked.

This is a novella of a fairy tale retelling. I love Britton's writing. This did not pull me in like her other books have but I enjoyed it. I think I am just a little tired of fairy tale retellings. This was very unique and well done as a shorter story. I think I just wanted more back ground and feeling from the characters that you get with longer stories. I'm a huge fan of Sally's and can't wait to see what she has in store next.

When I was very young, I had an illustrated book full of fairy tales and I had forgotten that I enjoyed Snow White and Rose Red so much back then. Sally Britton took that lesser known tale and created a beautiful Regency novella that captivated me.

I loved the setting of the French forest where Scarlett, her sister and grandmother live.
Feeling banished with nowhere else to go, they struggle to survive here until Caspar shows up. I love the air of mystery he brought with him, as he’s on a quest for treasure, but it’s his gentlemanly ways that truly won me over. The sweet and gentle romance that gradually and naturally developed is the snow cap on the mountains.

This story is so sweet and left me feeling so content. This is such a fun retelling and I was swept away by Britton’s writing style.

Content: mild romance

Caspar and Scarlett were two very delightful characters in this Regency fairytale story. I didn't read the synopsis very closely before I started listening to this story and was trying to puzzle out which fairytale it was based on. I kept thinking possibly some fairytale about a bear...in my memory there was some vague recollection of a fairytale or maybe it was a myth about a bear. But when I finished the book and finally read the synopsis I realized it was based on Snow White and Rose Red by the Grimm Brothers. And I can't recall if I've read their version of Snow White or not. If any of you know something about the bear myth/fairytale that was nudging its way to the forefront of my brain feel free to enlighten me. And it could be very possible that it is from the Brothers Grimm and I have read it and had just forgotten.

I really enjoyed the bit of mystery and suspense throughout this one and the fairytale quality of it. Caspar is a gentleman through and through and it showed throughout the book in every scene he was in. His care for Scarlett and her family was evidence of that. I couldn't help but grin and feel relief for them when he showed up and helped to lighten their burdens and cares through simple little tasks. When it talked about the sisters having to shovel all the snow and that it would take them hours to do so, then Caspar without being asked, swept in and shoveled it for them in a shorter amount of time I could have cheered loudly. Hee Hee! I live where it snows A LOT! And a house I lived in for several years has an enormously long driveway. It would take me hours to clear it off with no help, only to have the snow cover it up completely and I'd have to clear it off again. I enjoyed it but man was I grateful when the snowblower was an option (it worked sporadically so manual shoveling it was)!

I have always loved fairytales, the lighter happier versions more so than the dark and grim originals. I enjoy seeing how different authors can create their own spin on those fairytales, and this one was charming. Scarlett was a light to read/listen about. I loved her finding joy in her situation and adding her humor to the more dreary moments of her life.

A fun winter story to enjoy while snuggled up with your favorite hot cocoa flavor and fuzzy blanket!

Content: Clean. A couple moments of mild peril.

Happy Reading!!!

I listened to the audiobook which was great--the narrator did a fantastic job. I hadn't read the book blurb before I started listening but it sounded familiar because it's a Regency retelling of the Grimm's fairy tale Snow White & Rose Red.

I liked Scarlett's relationship with Caspar, the Captain who was determined to find the treasure that had been hidden so he could right some of the wrongs done to the people during the war with Napoleon. Scarlett is a brave young woman and Caspar is such a gentleman, who wants to do the right thing. He wants to use his position to help her, her sister and grandmother, and Scarlett would love to go back to the easier life she had led before the war, but she's afraid of what would happen to them because of her father's actions that led to them living in the forest. Scarlett and Caspar have a tender love story which I enjoyed.

This isn't a novella but it's also not quite a novel--it's a nice way to spend a couple of hours curled up in a cozy blanket.

Short and sweet.

I loved the author's way with words.. so beautiful:

"Scarlett tilted her chin upward and slid the bolt open, then swung the door open with all the confidence she could muster. Cold night air rushed inside, slipping around her feet to find the corners of their tiny cottage, like cats coming in from the weather."

" Caspar pitched his small canvas tent and crawled inside, wishing it were possible to bring the fire in with him. A place on a rug far outranked his current sleeping situation. The night’s lack of rest served to strengthen his resolve to go back. Trees creaked above him, the frozen stream made strange groaning sounds, and the wind found ways to slip into the tent to curl up against him before drifting out again."

A nice Christmas read.
The MC´s were a bit too perfect.
The plot a bit too convenient.
The ending a bit too fairy tale.
And there was almost zero angst.
But, nice and enyojable.
***
Una agradable lectura navideña.
Los protagonistas han sido demasiado perfectos.
La trama demasiado conveniente.
El final demasiado de cuento de hadas.
Y con cero estrés.
Pero agradable y entretenida.

Update after listening to the audiobook. I really enjoyed the narrator for this book. She brought the characters to life. Scarlett and her family have things pretty rough, but they're doing the best they can. I was impressed with their resilience. Casper was a happy addition who helped lighten their load, spirits and hearts. I really enjoyed this story the second time around.

When I first read the title I thought it would be a story about Snow White. Then when I read the description I thought it was Little Red Riding Hood. I was wrong on all accounts. I haven't heard of this fairy tale before, but I sure enjoyed this retelling of it. Scarlett and Casper are wonderful people. I loved reading their story and watching their relationship grow. This is a beautiful story and I really enjoyed it.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Snowy weather and warm feelings

When love comes knocking...

The Captain and Miss Winter is a sweet historical romance novella full of snowy weather and worm feelings that will melt your heart away.

Scarlet Winter lived in a small cottage in the middle of the French forest with her grandmother and her sister Blanche. Their home was very humble, and they farmed for survival without any servants.

One snowy and stormy night, a man knocked at their door, asking for shelter. He was a Captain in the English army named Casper. The Napoleonic wars had just ended, and Casper had returned to France to find a box that he left behind during the war.

The women gave him shelter, and he soon realized that, despite their poverty, they were educated English ladies. The mystery of their situation puzzled him.

The audiobook was very well narrated, and I especially liked how Scarlet's French accent was portrayed.

The story has all the elements that I love: an honorable hero, a smart and caring heroine, strong side characters, a slow-burn romance, and a real sense of companionship and family.

The audio (3 hours) length is also perfect because you can listen to it in one sitting or during a short trip.

I've read a few other books by Mrs. Briton, and I love her romantic and sweet stories.

The Captain and Miss Winter is a lovely historical romance novella about hard times and finding the strength to keep going.

I received a code for this audiobook from the author for an honest review.

I just love Sally Britton's books and this lovely story was no exception. It was delightful reading a retelling of a less common fairy tale, Snow White and Rose Red, and this adaptation was done masterfully, perfectly capturing all the elements of the original fairy tale while naturally adapting them to the Regency setting.

I adored the French woodland setting in winter, which served as a lovely backdrop for the romance. Scarlett and Casper were both wonderful characters—she had a delightful spunk and he was such a gentleman—and their romance was well paced and blossomed adorably. Casper’s goal of finding a lost treasure was a subtle but interesting subplot that added just a bit of mystery to enhance the story. I also enjoyed Scarlett’s relationship with her younger sister and grandmother. Overall, this was a sweet romance written in Sally Britton’s beautiful writing style. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Synopsis: “ A captain seeking to repair the past and the daughter of a fallen gentleman, searching for a treasure that will change their lives forever.”

I had such a good time reading this fairy tale retelling of Snow White and Rose Red. While I wasn’t familiar with the fairy tale beforehand, I still really enjoyed everything about it. Non-magic fantasy/non-magic fairy tale retellings are some of my favorite types of books to read. I also particularly enjoyed the winter setting. Personally, I can (and do) read winter books all year round and a book that takes place in a cozy cabin in the middle of a snow covered forest is quite literally the perfect book for me.

This was my first time reading anything by Sally Britton and I have absolutely no complaints. I’m super excited to continue this series and I can’t wait to read more of Sally Britton’s work in the future!

I loved this fairy tale retelling. It was set in Regency period which is my favorite. Scarlet was fun and spunky. Casper was the perfect gentlemen and handsome. I read it in one setting and was sad for it to be over. It was so good I wanted more. This is the second book I have read of this series and I have loved both and can't wait to read the next ones!

Charming and cozy

I haven't read a book by this author that I didn't enjoy. This story was just as sweet, realistic and engaging as her full length novels. I prefer a full novel to the smaller novelette/novella, however the storyline was so compelling, and the loose ends were wrapped up so nicely I don't mind the lack of pages.
I hadn't heard of this fairytale prior to this book and therefore didn't have any expectations other than comparing the style to her previous works. Again, this book didn't disappoint.
On a steaminess level I would rate this a pleasant PG.
This book is definitely worthy of a repeat read!

This story is a sweet and enjoyable retelling of Snow White and Rose Red. It’s a quick read or listen as it is a novella. Yet, I felt fully invested in these characters and hopeful that things could work out for Caspar and Scarlett.

Scarlett, her sister, and their grandmother had been living in hiding in a cabin in the French woods for years. They weren’t welcome in England and had lost their homes in France. They were poor and alone and hope for a good future seemed dim.

I loved the way they welcomed Caspar, even when things were so sparse for them. He folded into their little family so nicely and it was wonderful to see love begin to grow between him and Scarlett. Yet could these two actually have a hope of a future together? Would Caspar’s high station be a help or a hindrance to Scarlett’s family?

I liked listening to this sweet story. The narration was very good and it was a fun winter read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Sally Britton's The Captain and Miss Winter audiobook is a captivating Regency novella (book two in the Forever After Retellings series) that expertly blends fairy tales, mystery, and sweet romance!

Britton's skillful reimagining of Snow White and Rose Red in a Regency setting unfolds with appealing characters, striking the perfect balance of mystery and romance.

Jessica Elisa Boyd's narration is a standout feature, bringing the characters to life with authenticity, including Scarlett's charming French accent.

Despite its concise length, the audiobook maintains strong character development and delivers a genuine, heartwarming slow-burn romance.

A must-listen for aficionados of historical fairy tale retellings, this audiobook, showcasing Sally Britton's captivating storytelling and Jessica Elisa Boyd's magnetic narration, is a thrilling gem for every avid listener.

I received a download code to listen to The Captain and Miss Winter via Spotify and Booksprout by Sally Britton. I was not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. The words above are my honest review of this delightful audiobook.

Little did I know when I started this series that all the books have different authors. I just grabbed the first one and then went down the line without really paying attention.

Out in the middle of the woods, Casper comes across a cottage where Scarlett is staying with her grandmother and sister. Casper is in search of some gold that he wants to return to the people. Scarlett’s father left them in a bad situation.

Again, another cute novella. Short and to the point. Had some action and a bit of treasure hunting. I do like the MCs together.

LOVED, loved, loved this heartwarming story. The simplistic but vivid cover of the book drew me in, and the author's subtle descriptions didn't overtake the characters but added a simple warmth and cohesiveness to this sweet and clean regency romance.
I don't usually enjoy reading novellas because they're too short, but this book was full and well written. I highly recommend.

Update: I just listened to the audio version of this book. The narrator was perfect. I loved it.

I have only recently discovered Ms. Britton's works and have enjoyed reading them. This is a regency era retelling of The Brothers Grimm story of Snow White and Rose Red, a fairy tale I was not familiar with. It is not Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I had to look this one up to review the story.

I think Ms. Britton did a good job keeping to the original story yet making it different. She gave a believable reason to put three English women in post-war France for an Englishman to find. It was clean, sweet and entertaining. In the brief space of a novella the characters had a convincing insta-attraction that led to falling in love (as opposed to just having insta-love). It was a sweet happily ever after ending.

I enjoyed the first in this series as well so I'm looking forward to reading more.

Sex: a few kisses
Language: no
Violence: threatened with a knife- mild

This was a truly sweet, clean & feel good story. Set in France during the Regency era, it incorporates all of the components that I enjoy! Intrigue, suspense, humour & romance - include a spunky, beautiful heroine & a kind, handsome hero along with a doting grandmother & observant no-nonsense little sister.... what’s not to love?!
I have enjoyed every one of Sally Britton’s books & this one is no different. I also really enjoyed the first book for this series (which can be read as a stand alone &/or in any order) by Joanna Barker & I am eagerly looking forward to the next one in this Forever After series.

SQUUEEEEEPPPP!!!! A Regency Fairy Tale Retelling?! I've gone and swooned into a puddle on the floor at the very thought. And that this novel is inspired by one of my absolute favourite fairy tales -- Snow White and Rose Red -- I'm in such ecstasy I have no words. Except...

Sublimely divine from the very first page! Britton has combined the pacing and cadence of a fairy tale with the scrumptious courtly manners and playful banter of the Regency era. It's a lethal combination if you happen to be a bibliophile of my ilk. Though short (novella), the story has all the crucial ingredients of a longer novel and it makes for just as satisfying a read.

A hero with a troubled past set on putting things to rights. A wronged heroine doomed to be an outcast the rest of her life. The hope that tragedy might be overcome and a happily ever after possible. My heart is flip-flopping just thinking about it. And, oh, the dialogue, the shy glances, the yearning to fan the fires of that sweet spark of attraction...BUT...Scarlett has secrets, Caspar is on a quest and there's danger lurking in the woods! Squeal! Eep! Squueeeepppp!!!!

This is my first time sampling Sally Britton's storytelling style and I'm hooked. I have my Good Reads friends to thank for the introduction since I usually read Christian Fiction and I trust them to guide me to clean sweet romances -- especially where Regencies are concerned! If you like Sarah M. Eden, Mimi Matthews, Sarah E. Ladd and Julie Klassen, you'll want to add Sally Britton to your list.

Caspar is in France searching for some treasure hidden for safety in the war, with the intent of using it to help the poor who have suffered from the war. But winter isn't a good time to do so, and one freezing day he is fortunate enough to come across a hut in which he can shelter from the cold. The two girls and their grandmother who live there are willing to welcome him and appreciate his help in doing chores - but there is an attraction between Caspar and Scarlett that causes each to question their future...

Dare I admit that I don't actually know the original fairytale? Well, anyway, I didn't feel like that really changed my enjoyment of the book. Though I generally prefer longer books, this was done well in that it didn't feel rushed, but was a satisfying novella. With very few characters and the main focus on only two over a very short time, there is not a lot of character building, but I didn't think that was a bad thing in this case. All in all, a clean, well written story with a satisfying end.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

I haven't read Snow White & Rose Red since my childhood, but it has a fond place in my heart and I was happy to see this story is roughly based on that fairytale.

It's a engaging and well paced short story, with great insight into Scarlett & Casper's past. They are a good match, with a satisfactory conclusion.
