John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction: Interference Pattern

In this sci-fi horror, an experiment in faster than light travel goes terribly wrong. Unintended side effects will drop pilot David Peeler into a living nightmare when alternate versions of himself start appearing, each one more deranged than the last. Putting both himself, and his family in danger, David will navigate the farthest reaches of the cosmos, and the abyss of the human mind.

Little by little, he will lose himself to the growing insanity of confronting the darkest parts of himself made flesh. All of it culminating in an explosive ending that will almost certainly be Peeler's doom!

W świecie science fiction, gdzie eksperymenty z prędkością nadświetlną rzadko kończą się dobrze, Dennis Calero zabiera nas w psychodeliczną i mroczną podróż przez multiwersum… i własną tożsamość. „Interference Pattern” to opowieść o Davidzie Peelerze, pilocie i astrofizyku, który po nieudanym eksperymencie zostaje wplątany w spiralę rzeczywistości, gdzie jego alternatywne wersje zaczynają dosłownie zderzać się ze sobą — i to wcale nie w metaforycznym sensie.

Pomysł wyjściowy jest znakomity: co by było, gdyby spotkać samego siebie z innego świata? A co, jeśli ten „drugi ja” okaże się bardziej zdesperowany, brutalny… lub szalony? Calero stawia ciekawe pytania o tożsamość, wolną wolę i moralność, wpisując je w ramy klasycznego horroru SF. Niestety, choć koncepcja wciąga, sama realizacja miejscami rozczarowuje.

Największym problemem „Interference Pattern” jest brak konsekwencji w budowaniu napięcia i rozwoju postaci. Zaczynamy mocnym, brutalnym akcentem, sugerującym obecność grozy cielesnej, jednak dalsze wydarzenia nie podążają za tą estetyką. Wątki zostają poruszone, lecz nie rozwinięte – jak choćby los pozostałych podróżników między wymiarami, których historia zostaje spłaszczona do kilku strzałów bez większego uzasadnienia. Dialogi chwilami brzmią pretekstowo, a niektóre decyzje bohaterów wydają się nielogiczne lub pozbawione emocjonalnego ciężaru.

Warstwa graficzna zasługuje jednak na uznanie. Calero jako rysownik kreuje mroczne, nastrojowe kadry idealnie korespondujące z niepokojącą atmosferą. Kosmos w jego wydaniu jest nie tyle fascynujący, co klaustrofobiczny i groźny, a wizualna dynamika między Davidami dobrze oddaje ich wewnętrzne rozdarcie.

Podsumowując: „Interference Pattern” to ambitny, ale nierówny komiks, który ma potencjał, by zachwycić miłośników egzystencjalnych dreszczyków w stylu „Event Horizon” czy „The Thing”. Choć fabularnie zabrakło głębszego rozwinięcia i domknięcia wielu wątków, docenić należy intelektualny zarys i wizualną jakość. Jeśli cenisz koncepty z pogranicza fizyki i psychologii, a niedopowiedzenia Cię nie zniechęcają – warto dać tej opowieści szansę. Inaczej możesz odnieść wrażenie, że to tylko intrygujący szkic czegoś, co mogło stać się prawdziwie wielowymiarowym horrorem.

I think what got me is that you put John Carpenter in the title so I'm expecting something to build to something intense. But the main characters, when pressed to act, just kept changing their minds and not going through with it. The whole thing with the two Davids, one having lost his family being extremely violent towards the other who didn't lose his family, was super compelling! But then when actually faced with the reality he just kind of curls inward and goes along with other family David's plan to have him return to his own universe. I think also starting out with a really cool gruesome imagery set the scene that there would be some body horror aspect, but after the first time there was nothing like that again. It just seemed like a lot of build up for there to be no pay off. It really seemed like something was going to happen when they met up with the other people who had done the jumps to parallel universes, but then they're just mindlessly all shot with little to no explanation other than they had to be dealt with. There were so many parallel storylines that I could've come up which brought some importance and drama to the scene, but it was just over and done with quickly.

This was a cool idea dealing with real world physics questions and I liked how this played out. It just got a little too out there and open-ended at the end for me.
