Sartre was one of the key figures in the philosophy of existentialism (and phenomenology). His work has influenced sociology, critical theory, post-colonial theory, and literary studies. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature despite attempting to refuse it, saying that he always declined official honors and that "a writer should not allow himself to be turned into an institution."
Sartre held an open relationship with prominent feminist and fellow existentialist philosopher Simone de Beauvoir. Together, Sartre and de Beauvoir challenged the cultural and social assumptions and expectations of their upbringings, which they considered bourgeois, in both lifestyles and thought. The conflict between oppressive, spiritually destructive conformity (mauvaise foi, literally, 'bad faith') and an "authentic" way of "being" became the dominant theme of Sartre's early work, a theme embodied in his principal philosophical work Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant, 1943). Sartre's introduction to his philosophy is his work Existentialism Is a Humanism (L'existentialisme est un humanisme, 1946), originally presented as a lecture.

এত কম মানুষের রেটিং দেয়া বইটায়, বাতিঘরে বাংলা অনুবাদ না থাকলে পড়তাম কিনা সন্দেহ। বেঙ্গল পাবলিকেশন্স খুব সুন্দর একটা প্রোডাকশন করেছে।
সার্ত্রে সম্পর্কে বিশেষভাবে বলার আসলে কিছু নাই। অস্তিত্ববাদ সম্পর্কিত দর্শনের জন্য তিনি বিশ্ব বিখ্যাত।
নাটিকার প্রেক্ষাপটে উঠে আসছে গ্রেট আমেরিকার রেসিজম। নিউ ইয়র্ক শহর থেকে আসা এক বারাঙ্গনা জড়িয়ে পড়েন ক্ষমতাবান সিনেটরের ছেলে ও এক নিরীহ কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ পুরুষের সাথে। সিনেটরের ছেলে ও তার কাজিন দ্বন্দের দরুন এক কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ ব্যক্তিকে খুন করে বসে। সেই ট্রেনে ঘটনার সাক্ষী ছিল বারাঙ্গনাটি। তারপর তার সাথে রাত কাটানোর পর প্ররোচিত করে নিজেদের রক্ষার চেষ্টা করে সিনেটরের ছেলে কিন্তু তাদের পরিকল্পনা ব্যর্থ হয়ে যায়। ঘটনার এই প্রান্তে আগমন ঘটে শক্তিমান সিনেটরের। তিনি ছলচাতুরীর দ্বারা মেয়েটির কাছ থেকে সাক্ষ্য আদায় করতে সক্ষম হোন, যে অপর কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ ব্যক্তিই খুনটি করেছে আর মেয়েটিকে ধর্ষণ ও করেছে।
বংশানুক্রমে ক্ষমতার প্রবাহ, আইন কানুনের সীমাবদ্ধতা কিংবা মিথ্যা প্ররোচনা দ্বারা কিভাবে মানুষকে কাবু করা যায় তাও উঠে এসেছে। অতি অল্প পরিসরে ক্ষমতাহীনের যে মনস্তাত্ত্বিক বিশ্লেষণ করেছেন তা এক কথায় দুর্দান্ত। যুগের পর যুগ এভাবেই ক্ষমতাবানের প্ররোচনায় অবহেলিত হয়ে আসছে অনেকে। কেননা, কৃষ্ণাঙ্গ ব্যক্তিরাই সবসময় কিছু না কিছু করে।
আরোও বিশাল একটা আলোচনা প্রয়োজন বইয়ের পুরো বিষয়ের উপর আলোকপাত করার জন্য।

So, funny story, I spent ages looking for a copy of 'No Exit' earlier this year, and had this on my shelf the whole time. As it turns out, In Camera is just another name for the same play.
As such, I'd already read 'In Camera' and 'The Respectable Prostitute', but it was nice to revisit them. I don't think either are masterpieces, but they both bear Sartre's trademarks of rich characters and helplessness, and he does those things very well.
Lucifer and The Lord, on the other hand... Well, what can I say. This really is a masterpiece. The sort of thing that I was shocked to find out never became a blockbuster film. Almost every main philosophy of the 20th century is represented, and each is mutilated with the same fervour. Evil is inevitable and Good nothing but a pipe dream. Did I agree with all of it? No. Was I enraptured? Yes.
I still don't think Sartre was a playwright of the calibre of Sophocles or Shakespeare. Maybe he doesn't quite reach the heights of Miller, O'Neill or Wilde either. But he's pretty close.

The play is about the sense of superiority ,how truths and morals can be used ,abused and twisted .

1.5 : The respectable prostitute is a very brief story which personally left me unmoved and didn't stir my thoughts for even a moment after reading.

Am i destined to sit in the the least civilized place on earth to read the three plays of Jean Paul Sartre?
what i love about reading is that it unifies humankind even for one hour. it makes us read the book regardless our religions, our doctrines, our backgrounds and our ways of thinking.
as much as i am concerned i believe that yes i am destined to read this book, me, having 22 years and to be the first book in 2017.
it was the first book of his. but it definitely will not be the last.
of course recommended.
