Apples

Rate this book
Apples! Apples! Apples! Crunchy and tasty, sweet and tart, in colorful shades of red, yellow, and green -- sometimes all three -- everyone loves apples! In this lively and vibrant book, young readers will learn how apples grow, from the planting of a tree, to the pollination of buds by bees, and on to the harvest. And then comes the fun part as apples are used to tease the taste buds in so many ways -- in pies and strudel, in cider and applesauce, but most of all, in that one simple crunch when one bites into an apple's crisp sweetness. Ken Robbins's hand-colored photographs will make you want to take a bite yourself!

A great educational book for your children of all ages. My 5 yr old loved it as well as my 3 yr old twins. Lots of good information with beautiful pictures that will help keep children engaged. A great addition to any children's library.

Full of information and so many photographs that really help the reader understand the apple growing process, from grafting branches all the way to making applesauce.

Robbins' strengths as a writer are his clear, well-composed photographs that match his straightforward, informative style. My 4-year-old son now understands the process of farming the apples we eat, beginning with grafting branches onto an existing tree, setting out hives to pollinate the blossoms, waiting for the fruit to swell and grow, then finally picking them when ripe. I plan on taking him to an orchard this weekend with a cider press, so he can experience what he has seen and heard in the book. It's a great educational read for children up to approximately the age of 10, with additional information for older children on a 2-page spread at the end.

An introduction with photography to apples: history, growing/cultivating, ways to eat. This one isn't as strong as Robbins's Seeds, but it's a solid introductory book nonetheless, particularly if you want a book with actual photographs as opposed to illustrations. There is an interesting author's note in the back about the apple through history.

This is a wonderful non-fiction book about how apples are grown. I learned so many new things! The pictures are great, and even though the text is short and simple, anyone is likely to learn something from this book. AND I was left wanting to eat an apple.

This is one of those books where you just want to see pictures of something or find out something and you end up finding out all sorts of things. Like bees and how they like apple trees! I had no idea! And now let's make some apple pie!
