Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr., National Hero of Jamaica, was a publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, Black Nationalist, Pan-Africanist, and orator. Marcus Garvey was founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL).

Garvey was unique in advancing a Pan-African philosophy to inspire a global mass movement focusing on Africa known as Garveyism. Promoted by the UNIA as a movement of African Redemption, Garveyism would eventually inspire others, ranging from the Nation of Islam, to the Rastafari movement (which proclaims Garvey as a prophet). The intention of the movement was for those of African ancestry to "redeem" Africa and for the European colonial powers to leave it.

A conglomerate of material in regards to Marcus Garvey that should be required reading for all persons of African descent, anywhere. In addition to his political stances, this volume also includes some of his poetry as well as lessons which are referred to as "Message to the People, The Course of African Philosophy". My person opinion is that this volume contains enough material that if we were to replace our current love for the King James Version Bible with Message for the People, we would be in a better state of mind immediately.

This is an amazing book; I wish I had encountered it earlier in life. While I don't agree with about 20 percent of it the man writes full and complete wisdom the other 80 percent. I'd recommend this to anyone

A fascinating book. Only a brief comment is made about Marcus Garvey in most high school history books ending with a statement that he went to prison for mail fraud. In this book he answers the charges against him and reveals some of the opposition he faced when he first introduced his plan for African Americans to organize and enter the arena of world trade. His plans may have seemed grandiose, but were feasible. And in todays world of ethereal financial schemes actually seems a rather safe investment. That he actually got some of them off the ground and running was remarkable in the early twentieth century. His downfall (according to him)is the result of his naive, blind trust in anyone who seemed to take a sincere interest in his plans. Background checks were not a tool he used. Handshakes are not enforcible under the law. He claims to have been libeled, embezzeled, and set up by nefarious politicians and competing business interests. A really good read into the mind of a man who was inspiring at times and downright scary with some of his ideas on penalties for incompetence in government (death to the leader, and his wife) for those who betray the public trust. I recommend it for anyone who is curious about a man who rates mention in U.S. history, but about whom so little generally known.

The most influential Black leader in history, The Most Honorable President General Marcus Mosiah Garvey. This book is probably the best recommendation you can receive as a scholar of Black History. It has everything from Garvey's ideals, his Dialogues, his rhetoric, his Autobiography and most importantly his Lessons from the Course Of African Philosophy. I want to comment that in reference to those lessonz published in 1986 in book form of "Message To The People: The Course Of African Philosophy" here is a complete layout of different subjects with essential knowledge in intelligent and sensible living. Marcus Garvey was probably the most intelligent and most business oriented Black man of his time--if not all time.

The lessonz presented in the book laid out a complete reformation of African thought and essential knowledge in the principles of survival & social awareness. These lessonz will inevitably shift your average African American's awareness immediately and lead them to an ambition to strive towards self improvement and self determination. What's incredible about his lessonz was the fact this was conducted in 1937 and the information is relevant and essential to our reality today. It's no secret that all authors or philosophers of the early 20th century had a zealous amount of knowledge which paved the way for timeless success for many generationz. Napoleon Hill released Think And Grow Rich in 1937 and it's a timeless classic with over hundreds of millions of copies sold. Dale Carnegie released How To Win Friends and Influence People in 1936 and by 1937 it was a bestseller and a book Garvey himself cherished as well...millions of copies sold on that one as well. In retrospect to Garvey, his Course Of African Philosophy today is one of the most thoughtful most powerful books I've ever read in retrospect of Black History, he's giving you principles on not only how to live correctly but also your essential knowledge on how to survive and prosper in the world and in America.

This is why when they released the book "Life And Lessons A Centennial Companion to the Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers" this book was supported by 6 historical organizations (The National Endowment For The Humanities, The National Historical Publications and Records Commission, The Ford Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, The New York African American Institute, and The University Of California Press) in preserving the legacy of the most significant people in history--Garvey being one of them. The content he offers in his work is so timeless that even your average American would question whether or not the entire United States later paralleled their structure under some of Garvey's ideals from economics, to the stock market, to small business building and political rhetoric. As powerful and intelligent as this man was to the entire world and despite the fact he has employed a large number of Blacks throughout the world in the U.S. and several countries, it is quite a shock to find that not that many Americans today have a clear conception of just how important and big this man actually was.

He is the single reason why J Edgar Hoover decided to form the FBI in subverting and destroying Black organizations...he also is the reason why Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And Malcolm X was later Black Leaders of Human Rights. This is the single most influential Black man in history and he is not widely celebrated as the former men I just mentioned. I do believe someday the world will come to wholeheartedly celebrate his legacy on a world scale again today.

Life And Lessons was an amazing book and I highly recommend this book and his book Philosophy And Opinions . Though I think you should read Life And Lessons first. His work will raise the national consciousness of even the most analytical, most narrow -minded person on earth. I also want to say that I researched throughout this book and other Encyclopedia books that Marcus Garvey personally read and compiled a reading list which is now available on the website Radical Reads (. com) History has been made. He has read Carnegie's Gospel Of Wealth, The Miseducation Of The Negro, Up From Slavery and many other classics. This man was truly a pioneer of excellence and I believe this is a book you should cherish forever. You will not be disappointed. Every Black Man, Woman and Child should own a copy of this book or Message To The People The Course Of African Philosophy. I finished this book on August 17, 2022 his 135th birthday anniversary. I highlighted almost the entire book of sentences that resonated with me. It's truly a brilliant compilation of his work. After a year of reading the book on and off and studying it, I figured out quickly that this is definitely a book you want to own. Marcus Garvey is the true epitome of African culture, excellence, ambition, entrepreneurship and African / Black dignity.
