The author wrote this novel in 72 hours for the annual Three Day Novel Contest. Only two things about this novel that might betray that origin: the brevity, it's 167 pages, and the sense near the middle of the book that the protagonists epic slog from Canada to Russia across a North Pole permanently frozen by climate change is an echo of the author's own writing marathon.
No matter how long it took to write, it's a damn fine novel with well developed characters, setting and conflict.
Charles is walking across the Arctic, from Canada to Russia, to raise money for cancer research in the name of his dying brother Lawrence - but the tensions of their strained relationship puts not just his dangerous journey at risk, but the home and love he hopes to return to. Sedore offers an interesting narrative with decently paced mood and surprises, though a bit stale in humour and personality. What waits for Charles should he reach the end of this challenge?
I enjoyed this winner of the 3 Day Novel competition. It switches between scenes in the arctic & in Canada and I much preferred the scenes in the arctic. But it really captivates your interest. A well done novel. My biggest critique would be that every time someone is speaking, they use the name of the character they’re speaking to…multiple times in many occasions. It throws you off but isn’t enough to stop you from really enjoying the book & wanting to see if the protagonist can complete his quest.
I will admit to a conflict of interest right now..I know the author. That being said, I like the book regardless. Considering it was written over the labour day weekend, I find it is a cohesive, interesting read, one that grabs your attention. I have read other material by this other and look I look forward to seeing more of it published!
