These two requests seemed to express perfectly what other people wanted in therapy with me. They wanted to enact some sort of drama, with me there but not interfering, not stopping them, or trying to change them by 'making interpretations'. hypnosis, or other techniques designed to change them... the best way to help them out of the impasse they seemed to be in, was to help them enact in my presence the drama that was their particular way to a calmer, more balanced, more integrated, more wholesome, more healthy state of mind. But this drama itself was usually construed as the very pathological process that I was supposed to stop - that is, to cure. (131)
