A 5000 year history, from 2500 BC to 1972, Splendid Is The Sun ranks as one of the greatest hockey histories ever written. A groundbreaking work, rich in research and detail. Splendid Is The Sun covers the roots of hockey from ancient times, through both World Wars, and the Cold War, documenting the growth of American, Canadian, and Russian hockey culminating in the 1972 Canada-Russia hockey showdown. A monumental history that is truly one-of-a-kind. Notable Topics +Origins of Hockey. +European and North American history and development. +Birth of Professional Hockey. +Nationalism and International Play. +Rise of Russian hockey. +1960 U.S.A. Olympic Gold. +1972 Canada-Russia.
I'm a huge, life-long hockey fan well versed in the history of the National Hockey League as well as the development of the sport around the world. Disguised as an actual book, this poorly written and thinly researched work feels more like a cheap vanity publication in which the "author" borrowed large snippets of weakly attributed text from a variety of other not necessarily current or validated sources, then invented some improbable (and silly) links to modern-day hockey. I suppose the idea that 5,000 years of anything can be distilled into 261 pages should have been a warning. The blurbs accompanying this book where it's for sale are hilarious, no doubt written by the author. Be warned - it's a piece of crap.
