Using over fifty maps, John Imhof shows the battle's progress over the course of the afternoon and evening of July 2nd. Each map shows the battlefield as a whole, rather than small sections of it, allowing the reader to see how events were interrelated. Each map is followed by several heavily-footnoted pages of text explaining what is occurring on the maps.
A detailed map study of the Confederate assault at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. This series of 55 separate "map studies" examine the actions staring from Hood's attack on the southern end of the Union line and finishes with the events on East Cemetery and Culp's Hills. The maps are presented at an appropriate scale to visually demonstrate the "en echelon" strategy of the Southern assault, the key to understanding Lee's plan and the nature of the battle.
This is a superb publication, limited at the time I found out about it to 1500 copies. I xeroxed the maps and wish that I had xeroxed the explanations!
While not an analytical study of the tactics and strategy used on July 2nd, this book is great at showing what happened simultaneously across the entire battlefield.
