Hajime Kindaichi is a world-class underachiever. At school, his only real friend is model student, Miyuki-- so it comes as quite a surprise when he gets invited to a classmate's wedding. But Kindaichi notices there's something a little odd about the bride's hometown and the six gorgeous mansions built there. His suspicions are confirmed when the owners of the mansions are gruesomely murdered, one by one, by someone calling himself the "Seventh Mummy." Could this idyllic mountain village be cursed? The deeper Kindaichi digs into the town's past, the more he discovers that the only real monsters lurking here are human.

This volume (and these series) are stupendous! I absolutely hate detectives, I consider them to be much worse than even harlequins, but this manga definitely has a special place in my heart. I admire the authors for their well thought-through, unpredictable storylines. The murders, the mystery and the tension are really outstanding, but it's the reveal of the murderer and the motives that are the most gratifying. I love that in most of Kindaichi stories I've read the murders were an act of vengeance and that the criminals weren't mentally ill or inherently evil, but the victims of other people/life circumstances; people who were driven to extremes because of the terrible anguish they experienced. Most of the "villains" can be pitied after we find out their life story.

Back to this particular volume :
The art was absolutely amazing, albeit gruesome (the chopped off limbs, the cut off head).
The plot was really shocking and impressive, the story of a boy's revenge for his and his mother's ruined lives, for all the innocent girls burned by the villagers. It’s a pity that he never had a chance at a normal life because of his upbringing. I gasped in shock when I found out that the killer actually murdered his own mother!
I think it's sort of right that every village inhabitant was killed, the moral of this story was "You reap what you sow", emphasized by the purification with fire.

In conclusion, I wish there were more books like this one, books that keep you on the edge of your seat and stun and move you and have a satisfying ending.

i was under the (wrong) impression that this series was going to be a fluffy and fun murder mystery with high schoolers. BOY WAS I WRONG BECAUSE TRIGGER WARNING:

This volume would have been perfect, BUT FOR the traumatizing image of the roasted cat served up on a platter as a gourmet meal with a man biting into the cat, and the romanticized teacher-student relationship, plus the unnecessary ecchi scenes. i’m literally traumatized i feel like my cat will be mad at me if he understood what i just read!😭

BUT that’s not even the end of it, this story was so dark and depressing i was not even ready for it lmao. Like the suspect characters each having a real mummy skeleton with a distinct missing part they casually keep in their house and the very ott backstory to this?? hello?? Between the constant mind blowing revelations, the grittiness, the realistic feel of the dangerous situation they were all in, and literal near death experiences, these teenagers are going to need a LOT of therapy. shit me too.

i vacillated between giving this 3 stars or 4 stars and i was so close to 3 but the mysteries were too good to not give it a 4. i sincerely apologize to my cat for this.

2019: 4.5 stars.

Another nth time reread but I'm a bit underwhelm this time because I remember almost all the answers to the mystery. Anyhow, I'm planning to reread all of the books in the series to move to the latest series of Hajime Kindaichi.

One can tell that the writing of the story is heavily influenced by Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes books and one can also question how realistic the solution or ways the perpetrator did the crime.

Dalam rangka bernostalgia~

Definitely not as good as the first and there are some really weird what-the-hell’s present in this one. I mean, beyond the usual goofery I enjoy in this series.

A student and teacher get caught having an affair and her family decides to push up her arranged marriage. Their village is a series of mansions designed around the Star of David (uh... okay...) and in the centre is the... church? (Wait, what?) There’s an elaborate ceremony involved and it quickly turns into a locked room mystery and, as always, the bodies are soon piling up.

Our second masked person of interest in as many stories, which is a little much (and seriously, the second there’s a murder, UNMASK THAT PERSON). There’s some really complicated slight of hand at the heart of things, although the solution to the locked room mystery is actually pretty clever (and the good side of ridiculous).

It’s okay fun, just overlong and everybody is damned unlikeable throughout, save Kindaichi and Miyumi. Our first swearing on Kindaichi’s grandfather that he’ll get to the bottom of things - even as in one scene he missed a very obvious clue.

I wish this one hung together better than it did, but the elaborate premise just to set up the mystery does it no favours. The series is better when it has a basic set-up and then a ludicrous solution. This one’s a little too murky for its own good.

FIRST EVER MANGA! I was actually slightly terrified reading the end of this but then again it was midnight. Perhaps the atmosphere became too much for me.

Anyway, RTC!

After reading the first book in the series, The Phantom of the Opera (which you really should read), I decided I had to get a hold of what happens next, so I did.

When Hajime and Miyuki are invited to a classmate's early wedding (which was pushed early because of an affair between the bride and a lover), Hajime, Miyuki, and a teacher, Susumu Odagiri, drive to the isolated village in the mountains which the classmate, Wakaba Tokita (a.k.a the bride) calls home. But on the night before her wedding, she...wait for it...gets murdered! Hajime and Miyuki immediately get on the case. But Hajime and Miyuki discover that there is a secret about the strange isolated village, and a pattern, that the killer might be following. And the pair of detectives have to catch this person quick-before he/she commits his/her last murder and gets away with it!

Oh, shoot. Said too much.

This book contains intense, maybe explicit and scary content, and should not be read by kids under 12. But the storyline is so well plotted, and the artwork so intense, who wouldn't want to read it? Maybe the faint-hearted.

Great and well-crafted mystery. I have always been a fan of the anime and the live action adaptation, but the original beats all of those. Even though this volume is excellent, there are drawbacks. I can tell that the author paid homages to "Tokyo Zodiac Murders". A little too much, if you ask me. But, it weaves well into the story. However, there is a something that killed it. It costs one star from me. Spoilers ahead: the author suddenly added a suspect to the panel around the end chapters. To me that totally gave it away. I think that someone mishandled the property. Other than that, this is one of the best lockroom mystery I've picked up.

Although I felt this case seemed a bit far-fetched for me, I couldn't deny the creativity behind this story is exceptional. I don't know whether the ending is considered romantic or pathetic, but I think this one lies slightly heavier than the first case.

Each case in this manga is a stand alone mystery, and we are still very early in the series. So while reading in order will be better to understand the recurring characters, it's not necessary to enjoy the individual stories.

The Mummy's Curse brings our highschool detective and his best friend to a strange isolated village in the country by way of a school scandal. When preparations for their classmate's arranged wedding are interrupted with murder Hajime must unravel the truth behind the village's curse.

Like volume 1 (The Opera House Murders) this is a classically built murder mystery. Some key setup and all the players established up front and then the danger and tension hit hard and build rapidly. There are a lot of interlocking layers here to explain and the resolution spans most of the second half of the volume, but it's all done very well. One of the main secrets is a classic twist that has been seen before. But everything comes together and is used in unique ways and combinations, making this a very interesting read. There are also some great little touches and instances of the author playing with preconceptions. Subtle clues are available and while the reader will never piece out every little detail the core mystery is solvable, which makes these stories particularly intriguing.

The art is extremely good. It's well detailed, easy to follow and conveys atmosphere and tension wonderfully, acting as a great component to the storytelling.

The Mummy's Curse is a strong second installment in Kanari and Sato's mystery series and continues to build momentum for more stories about our young detective.

The Kindaichi Case Files, Vol. 2: The Mummy's Curse is one of the best stories of the series--gruesome serial murders took place in an remote village, cruel unknown murderer, grudge, dismemberment, mummified mysterious corpses, dark secrets within the village's most powerful families and lot and lots of amazing plot twists, all weave together into an epic tragedy filled with mysteries and crime.

But one star needs to be taken down because the major plot twist is in fact plagiarized from a detective novel by a famous Japanese detective novelist.

My goodness, I had also read the novel and I know what Kanari Yozaburo, the author of the Kindaichi Case Files series had done is plagiarism at first degree--for plot twist is the heart and soul of detective story and its creator's lifeblood. Stealing plot twists is the same like stealing someone else's lifeblood. And why would Yozaburo think he can get away with it when the original novel is already so well known among detective novel's fans!?

Though I admit Yozaburo had no problem adding creativity of his own into the story, still...it can't cover up the whole rip-off thing.

Good grief, this is a masterpiece! More so than the preceding volume, this one does justice to Seishi Yokomizo’s original Kindaichi series. It’s dark, it’s a little twisted, it’s bloody, and the climax is full of revelation after revelation.

The artwork is also top notch. Some of the panels are almost surprising with how well they manage to convey light and shadow.

It’s understandable why this one, along with the one where all the students hang themselves, was deemed unsuitable for the anime series but it did at least get a live action adaptation.

Long live Young Kindaichi. Hopefully he has a resurgence someday. In the US, his grandfather is finally being published more than ever. Maybe Hajime never would have left us if the anime creators used filler episodes…

First Manga title I've ever read. After I finally figured out how to read it, I really kind of liked it. Couldn't keep the character's names straight for a while, but it all mad sense eventually. Having to read many graphic novels for a graduate course I'm taking, this was a nice refreshing change of pace. I was getting tired of meaningful, deep, culturally relevant titles and this was a classic (Japanese) Encyclopedia Brown type of book. Not too bad...

Dark, mysterious and eerie about this case. As the mystery delves further there is a very darkest truth behind the murder leading the most tragic conclusion. Nevertheless Kindaichi Hajime never cease to amaze of his deductions.

The Curse of the Mummy Village is one of the best Kindaichi Youth Case Book mysteries, although the main plot twist is absolutely plagiarized from an other novelist, still the plot is so rich and engaging!

I tend to re-read this series every year, and it's still an impressive story.
