I had hoped that the kind Duchess would take me there, but I found that great ceremony was needed before the acknowledged wife of the Prince-Duke of Schomberg-Kissingen could be disposed of in any way. At last, after a private interview with the confessor of the Duchess-Regent, and another with the Bishop of Kissingen,--sent for in haste from his episcopal country-seat,--it was arranged that, escorted by the Duchess-Regent and her whole Court, I should go publicly into the Convent, to remain there under charge of the Abbess till my husband, or some one deputed to act for him, should come to fetch me away. To the Bishop I told everything; the confessor of Madame la Regente I mistrusted, as having a too easy conscience. The Bishop, who was a kind old man, believed me. He strengthened me in my resolution; he recommended prayers to me when thoughts of Count Philippe came into my mind. I told him what McGregor had said, and Captain Parrot, and owned that they had helped and strengthened me. "Often," he said, "by the grace of God, words of wisdom are put into the mouths of those who are not of the true religion; you may take it for a little word from God, sent to you in your great extremity." He told me, too, that in my resolve to cling fast to my duty as Charles Antoine's wife, I was choosing the better part, and that if I would but hold fast, God assuredly would bless me in the end, and give me happiness.
