About the author

A pseudonym used by Douglas Borton, aka Brian Harper.

Douglas Borton grew up in New Jersey and attended Wesleyan University, then moved to Los Angeles and pursued a career as a screenwriter. After working with several independent producers, he eventually switched to writing novels, a much less stressful occupation. He has published 25 thrillers, starting with horror novels in the 1980s and continuing with suspense and crime novels in the '90s and beyond. His latest book is Bad to the Bone (2015), a sequel to Blood in the Water (2014). After twenty years in traditional publishing, he went the indie route in 2011 and has become one of America's bestselling ebook writers.

I believe this is my 2nd book of this series and I enjoyed it. The primary characters and their interactions are interesting. The story kept me engaged and there were a few surprises in the end. Well worth the time I took to read it.

I did not know this was a series so have read two books out of order but I still enjoyed this suspense thriller. It is great seeing women in lead roles of good guy and baddie.

Interesting cast of characters - including the two leading female detectives, who, as far as I can tell, are both rather unappealing people, though talented at their job. One is a neurotic and violent step-removed-from-a-criminal, and the other is a dishonest and untrustworthy paranoid. Strange couple for a pretty standard thriller. Greedy evil politicians, ex-con druggie bikers, a woman imprisoned for infanticide...the litany of charmers never stop.

Strangely enouogh, the book is intriguing and kept me interested right until the end. It must be some good writing that can make such unpleasant compelling.

The problem I had with the last book by this author was that from the beginning I knew who the villain was, the author made it clue very early on. I didn't find the characters or the story very interesting and it seemed as if the author didn't care about those things either. This book started out with the same set-up, the villain is established early, but the character that sets out to bring him down is very interesting. Her name is Abby and she stalks stalkers for a fee. She is manic, has sociopath tendencies, and no qualms about bending the rules to get her way. I see that the author as featured her in a few other books, I hope to come across them.

Both Tess and Abby come close to losing everything, including their lives before the truth comes out near the end. Thanks for another great read. You won't want to put this book down.
