Based on nearly two decades of Chantal Sicile-Kira's personal and professional experiences with individuals and families affected by this growing epidemic, Autism Spectrum Disorders explains all aspects of the condition,
- The causes of autism spectrum disorders - How to properly diagnose ASDs - Treatments based on behavioral, psychological and biomedical interventions - Coping strategies for families - Educational needs and programs - Living and working conditions for adults with ASD - Community interaction - Teaching strategies and resources for educators and other professionals
In my opinion a must read for anyone who has a child or a close loved one who has been diagnosed within the realm of ASDs. Very reader friendly, this book explains some of the ins and outs (as best as one can) of Autism Spectrum Disorders, and offers some very useful strategies for dealing with Autism on a day to day basis.
This book is a good book for parents ( or family members) that have a child that has been diagnosed of being on the spectrum of Autism.
Being a Mom, I want to do everything possible that I can to give my child the best life possible. When my son was very little, he had major challenges learning to walk, learning to speak. He had fears of large crowds. Music made him cry. I felt like I was failing him. I didn’t know what to do. I asked my doctor what I could do differently to be a better parent to help him. My doctor diagnosed my son with Autism. He said there wasn’t much that I could do. ( this was 18 years ago. Thank goodness things are getting better now. Fortunately, today there are many organizations, doctors, schools, teachers, mentors, other parents, books that are wonderful to help children, parents, and families. There is research and movements to make things even better.) The doctor even mentioned that some people put their children in institutions because raising a child with Autism was so difficult and exhausting. I knew that was definitely NOT what I was going to do to my son. I got a different doctor. I started reading everything about Autism that I could get my hands on to learn how I could help my son live his best life possible . I reached out to a few different organizations.
Autism has a very broad spectrum. So, this book helps you understand different things about Autism and different behaviors. Being a parent of a child with Autism. You really appreciate all of the information that you can get to help your child. This book answered some of the questions for me. I believe it will be helpful for other parents that have children with Autism to answer some questions that they have about their children. I believe that knowledge is power to do the best that I can for my children. I would recommend this book .
thorough. by a parent for parents, but broadly informative. was struck by how hard it can be to claim the special education kids are supposed to receive automatically -- special educators are poorly paid when funding is present at all.
Good overall landscape. Lots of commented references.
Only 3 stars because it's too soft on pseudo-scientific and potentially harmful believes. E.G.: It does not endorse the relationship between vaccination and autism but it does not categorically denies it.
A must have for practitioners working with children with developmental delays or ASD or parents of children with such diagnosis. The book provides valid information on symptoms, criteria available resources and helps its readers understand ASD through words of parents of children with developmental delays and people having a similar diagnosis. A good description of this puzzling world of ASD. However, I think one of the downfalls of the book is that it does not list specific treatments available with good descriptions of each it directs the reader to many other resources in which they can find access to such information including websites and other resources. Though, a great book as all in 1 about developmental delays!
Very interesting, full of useful information. Would be a tad more useful if it were to delve further into some of the techniques and treatments rather than sending the reader to countless websites. I suppose that would be due to the huge number of options available and that fact that an author couldn't fit them all into one book. I learned a lot from this book and enjoyed reading the paragraphs placed throughout from the perspective of parents of and people with ASDs. I do, however wish there was a bit more to read about individuals with severe ASDs, for instance non verbal people.
As someone who works with children on the Autism Spectrum, this was a very informative book that gives a nice overview of topics related to Autism. Sicile-Kira notes that her information is in no way meant to be exhaustive, which I would agree with, but it is a good place to start. It also includes some great resources specifically for teachers, parents, siblings, ect., which is very helpful. Overall, a perfect book to start learning about and understanding ASDs.
This book is a must-read for any parent of an autistic child. There it's a wealth of information here and is undoubtedly a resource to return to many times. Everything is covered, and additional resources are given for any aspect of life with autism that you can think of. This is an informative book that's an easy read because things don't get too technical - it's like having a good friend holding your hand and leading the way.
Very thorough in breadth of topics, but not very in-depth (for instance, it doesn't tell you how to implement any of the many different therapies, it just gives you an overview of the 30+ techniques/interventions available). It is a great resource as a starting point and gives many many references of books, websites and addresses to turn to for more info.
Well this book is from the UK. If you live in the UK this book can help you very much dealing with autism. It tells you where to turn to, what books to read, what to apply for, who to talk to. What it does not is to go into some depth about how you should deal with an autistic person behaving badly. There are other books which are dealing more with behavioural problems
I choose this book because I was confused as to what autism is. I did appreciate the inside the author gave on a number of issues I had not thought of. I am just the grandparent of a boy with autism and I wish to help rather than hinder his further development.
This is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn about Autism Spectrum Disorder. This book was required reading for my job. However, I did not fully appricate the book until 7 months into the job and was writing a research paper for school. This book is a lifesaver for anyone seeking to understand the world of ASD.
I would highly recommend this book to parents! The author has a child with ASD and she shares her journey in a personal and proactive manner. It's loaded with useful resources and information. I love that it's jargon free because it makes for a quick read.
A very good and easy to read book about Autism Spectrum Disorder. Has a lot of good general information although being published in 2004 may be dated a little.A good start for those new to the subject.
This is an easy to read and informative book. My daughter (11) checked it out of our local library for a non-fiction writing project. We both read the entire book. This is a great starting point for people interested in understanding ASD.
I found this book to be quite informative, but not with the information that I was looking to read up on. I wish it told more about PDD-NOS. Still an enlightening read and chock full of resources.
This book really helped me understand a lot more about ASD. I noticed a lot in my child. I especially liked the section on what to look for in her IEP.
