Investigative journalist, Joanna Haslam, as the most junior reporter on her paper's newsdesk is sent to cover the memorial service of a theatrical knight. The service turns into a drama, and the mystery can be traced back to the early days of the 20th century.
Lucinda Edmonds was a birth name of the Northern Irish wtiter, under which she published her early books, before starting to use her new married name of Lucinda Riley.
Dafuq was this? What did I just read? An overly twisted and complicated mystery and a devastating secret that really wasn’t all that devastating. I loved the concept, and I realize this was written in the 90s but only recently published. However, I think that fact works against the book. In today’s royal family, a prince married a divorced American actress in a fairytale wedding. No scandal, and no one treated it as such. The monarchy has seemingly tried to embrace life in the 21st century like the rest of us. It just makes this book about a 70 year old affair (and the ridiculous lengths secret agents go to in order to preserve the secret) seem... not so scandalous.
I really couldn’t with a lot of this. Just couldn’t. Over the top and so silly. Gah, I’ll never read this author again.
niet doorheen te komen. allemaal te makkelijk bedacht en het duurde 100 blz te lang voor ze bij het (ook niet zo heel boeiende) plot kwam. toch las het nog wel lekker weg, vandaar 2 sterren

It's a long time since I read this book, I read & enjoyed all of Lucinda Edmonds books in the early 90s & I remember this was my favourite as it makes you realise what could go on within the Royal Family. A secret lies buried for 70 years - a secret that could expose a scandal within the very highest strata of British society. Investigative journalist, Joanna Haslam, as the most junior reporter on her paper's newsdesk, is sent to cover the memorial service of a theatrical knight. The service turns into a drama, and the mystery can be traced back to the early days of the 20th century.
