I can see why Stine says this is one of his favorite books. The sheer number of twists in the first 5 chapters is something to be admired. About halfway through the eventual resolution presents itself pretty obviously, but I still enjoyed the ride.

SPOILERS:

SPOILERS:

What the heck is it with body swapping books? Anyway..short book and not my favorite by Stine who I happen to like but this one just was not up there for me.

I read this plot line in YA before in a Lois Duncan book which actually scared the crap out of me. As a result, I tend to compare any of the "body swap" genre to that book.

I did enjoy that it was twisty. And his books always have that creepy quality that makes them so popular. Sometimes, curling up with a good Stine book or Christopher Pike book is just perfect.

I just like some of his others better. It does work as a creepy little YA thriller but some of his others are scarier and more to my liking.

A rather sad one. There a spoiler I think should’ve came later, it lessened the surprise of the ending. Oh and there’s no cabin, it’s a stone wall.

I don't have a lot to say on this one though I did enjoy it. It wasn't what I was expecting at all, it's much sadder. It did become rather obvious what was going to happen at the end but I did still enjoy reading it.

This one seems different from other RL Stine books. I found it interesting and I did like it. The ending was just sad, though. I mean, think about it... very sad.

A really good book that I have read is the book "Switched" by R.L Stine. I was so into this book that I never thought I could be tricked by all the events going on. All of the details and everything made me feel like if it was me living the story. I didn't have to see a movie to know how everything in the story looked because it was already on my head.
From the beginning I already knew my favorite character would be Nicole. Nicole and I have similarities. One similarity that we have is that we both have parents that care about us a lot and get scared when ever I don't come from my friends house early. Nicole seemed so confuse and paranoid. She reminded me of my mom when she has many things to do and she goes all crazy. My mom can act just as Nicole did when she found out she had switched bodies and she murdered people. Lucy and Nicole were best friends and they both didn't like their lives, so they decided to switch bodies, but that was not as cool as Nicole thought. It was a tragedy.
This book has showed me how to use sensory details and how to describe characters to make it seem like you were living that story with them. Also, this book made me think about how friends can be something that you really care about, you would understand me more once you read it. z

Moral of the Story: A book as crazy as this one MUST have a logical explanation. Also, you shouldn't switch bodies with your best friend... you may not know them at all. Just love yourself!

Gaping Plot Holes: None

Body Count: Four: Kent, the Kramers and Margie

The Usual Suspect(s): Lucy Kramer

The Actual Suspect(s): Erm....

Tagline: A mind is a terrible thing to lose.

I read this book when I was younger and about 50 pages into it this time already remembered what the major plot twist reveal was. Honestly, it's the only explanation. This one is cuckoo bananas!!

Plot: Meet Nicole Darwin. She just hatesssssss her life. Her parents suck. She's wearing all black. She's not turning in homework. Her boyfriend just broke up with her. Her best friend Lucy Kramer isn't having a good time either, but she has a secret that just might help Nicole. She wants to switch bodies!!

Nicole doesn't care that Lucy is a bit too eager to switch. Lucy tells Nicole that she knows of a Changing Wall from ancient fables. This wall, in Fear Street Woods, is covered in old stones. When two people stand on top of the wall and hold hands and jump off on the other side their bodies are switched with one another's. According to lore, criminals would bring unwilling body donors to the wall so they could switch bodies with them in order to escape punishment. Hmmm. Without hesitation, Lucy and Nicole jump off.

Now, Nicole is Lucy! What a trip. She feels sorry for Lucy having gotten the rotten end of the deal... after all, Nicole's boyfriend just broke up with her. Her life totally sucks. But Lucy has a boyfriend, Kent, that now belongs to Nicole! They go their separate ways. Nicole (in Lucy's body) realizes she has to go to Lucy's house now.

Turns out she's going to spend the rest of the book on the lam. The sight waiting for her at Lucy's house is not a pleasant one. Lucy's parents have been murdered!! Getting used to a new body is weird enough, but getting used to your best friend's parents being murdered is even weirder. Nicole flees the house, determined to find Lucy and tell her what happened. Suddenly Lucy has dropped off the face of the planet. She remembers that she has a boyfriend now. She goes to Kent's house so he can help her find Lucy.

Kent is home, but he calls her Nicole! Nicole reasons that Lucy must have told him about the switch. She tries to get Kent to tell her where Lucy is, but he says he'll get her a drink and disappears into the kitchen. Nicole hears him calling the police. Wtf? Why won't he help her?!

Nicole heads back to Lucy's house and resolves not to look in the kitchen again. She heads upstairs to Lucy's bedroom. Inside she finds everything completely empty. No clothes. Nothing. Are you starting to catch on a bit to the final twist? She DOES find a knife driven into the desk with a note that says "I couldn't take it anymore. I had to kill them. Lucy K"

Nicole realizes her best friend has framed her for murder!! Lucy used Nicole's body just like the prisoners did in that lore. Now she'll get away with her crimes. Nicole runs out of Lucy's house and realizes that she's being chased by two cops. They must know who she is already. She heads to a Pizza Joint, more determined than ever to find Lucy. She spots her!

Lucy is sitting with her friends Margie and Hannah. Nicole confronts them, but Lucy has vanished. As does everyone else in this book, Lucy's friends just gape at Nicole openmouthed. But they still call her Nicole, and THEY know about the switch too. Frustrated, Nicole runs out of the restaurant with Margie and Hannah chasing her down. She basically almost runs them over in her attempt to get away.

Since she didn't have may options to begin with, Nicole is back to confronting Kent again. This time she arms herself with a knife. No need, as Kent has already been murdered! She sees him decapitated on the floor in front of her. The knife clatters to the ground, but not before the police see her holding a knife above Kent's murdered body.

Nicole has nowhere else to sleep but on the cold, hard ground of the place that started it all. She sleeps at the Changing Wall, which she finds herself doing a lot in this book. She thinks about Lucy. How could a best friend do something like this to her? Nicole was always there for Lucy, even through a terrible car accident that she was in. The doctors gave up on her... everybody did except Nicole. So why would Lucy suddenly start murdering everyone and blaming Nicole?

I hope you've figured out the twist by now.

The next morning Nicole is back to wanting to confront Margie. She just HAS to know where Lucy is. She evades the policemen outside the school doors and sneaks into the girls' locker room. She has fourth period gym with Margie and decides to wait in a dark closet for her until then. Margie comes in with major leg cramps, so Nicole first sees her lying on the floor. Then she confronts her again and it's the same "Nicole, are you okay?" spiel where she refuses to tell her where Lucy is. Nicole goes back into her closet of hiding, but when she comes out again she sees Margie on the floor... with blood coming out of her head and pooling around it. That Lucy just won't stop!!

Tired of confronting everyone, Nicole decides to find Lucy herself. She thinks that Lucy is probably at her Grandma Carla's house. Once again, she is greeted as Nicole and not Lucy. Nicole hears Grandma calling the police, and she runs out back to hide. While in her hiding place in the barn she bumps into... Lucy! Finally! But Lucy pretends to be a girl named Nancy, saying that Lucy forced her to change bodies with her earlier that day. Nicole finally believes her story but then Lucy says, "Naw, I'm just joshing ya." Nicole still believes she might have a shot at getting her body back.

Lucy runs off to the well outside, while Nicole is tackled by Kent, who is not very dead at all. She hears Lucy falling to the bottom of the well, and she struggles to get away from Kent. She doesn't want to lose her only chance to get her body back. Kent just tells her that it's okay, that she needs to let Lucy drown. Huh?

But - not so fast! Lucy climbs back out of the well (The Ring!) and, while dripping with well-slime, pulls off Kent's head right in front of Nicole's eyes.

How can this book possibly be resolved in any logical fashion when it has jumped off the diving board marked "Crazy"? I'm glad you asked.

The policemen come around back along with the Kramers, Nicole's parents, and Kent. Nicole bugs out. She can't believe the Kramers and Kent are still alive, especially after what she just saw!! Turns out Lucy died in a horrible car crash three years ago. Ever since then Nicole has had PTSD, basically. She hallucinates violent killings and often pretends that she IS Lucy. Nicole was doing fine for a while until this latest break-up with her boyfriend. Yeah, those will drive you crazy. I know firsthand. The policemen are actually hospital workers who take Nicole away to the hospital.

Six weeks later, Nicole swears she's fine. She's making it through with the help of Lucy, who comes to visit her every day.

Poor Nicole!! Come to think of it, I do remember reading that well scene when I was younger. Who could forget?! Next up is Silent Night 2, which I also remember reading just by the cover. We'll see how much of the book and plot twists I remember.

When Nicole is persuaded to switch bodies with her friend Lucy, she does. The only thing that goes wrong is that Lucy is now murdering people in Nicole's body! Will they be able to switch bodies before it is too late? Read on and find out for yourself.

This was a great Fear Street novel. If you enjoy the Fear Street series, be sure to check them out at your local library and wherever books and ebooks are sold.

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

Right off the bat, this girl Nicole is a piece of work. She cried because she broke a nail and I could not help but roll my eyes. I do admit that over the years I have become that girl that gets upset when I break a nail, but NOT to the point of crying. Look, a broken nail means I have to file down ALL of my nails so they match, which means less space for nail art. And I love my nail art. Lol.

Although, now that I think about it, maybe she cried because it hurt? Maybe she broke it toward the nail bed, which OWW. That would definitely hurt. But I don’t know.

That’s not the only thing that put me off of this character. This poor girl’s life is a mess. She broke a nail, she didn’t do her homework which she fully admitted to being her own fault (she literally had no excuse), and now her boyfriend broke up with her. Oh no! AND THEN her parents “smother” her! AKA her parents just worry about their kid 🙄 Yes, I am being extremely sarcastic. Lol. I’m sorry but all her whining was getting on my nerves!

But anyway, this is why she decided to switch bodies with her friend Lucy. Unfortunately for Nicole, her friend is now using her body to do some murders 😈

As the book went on, I went from disliking Nicole to really feeling for her, surprisingly.

So even though I guessed the plot twist, I really enjoyed this book! There were some grisly murder scenes, which I really enjoyed. The number of decapitations was absolutely crazy! But it was also incredibly sad and not for the reason you might think. This was one of the rare books where me having figured out the plot twist ahead of time didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book.

Switched might be the most frustrating Fear Street book I’ve read, in part because it started out with such a wild and engaging premise. For the first half of the book, I was convinced that this was going to become my favorite Fear Street book so far. The first twist that came (after the initial premise laid out on the back cover) really hooked me. It put our main character into such a weird and precarious position. There were so many fantastic possibilities of where the narrative could go. As the second half rolled on, I began to suspect that a final twist was coming. I was genuinely hoping my suspicions were wrong, but they were not. Stine ultimately took one of his coolest concepts and ruined it with a tired trope he’s used in multiple other Fear Street books. I could cite two titles off the top of my head, but I’ll save the spoilers for below the jump. If my expectations hadn’t been built so high in the beginning, I might have been more forgiving. I don’t think I’ve felt this let down by a story since watching M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village. I wanted Switched to be the book that the first half of it led me to believe it would be. Maybe one of the new Fear Street movies can take the best parts and make something better with it. As it stands, I’m just really bummed out at the wasted potential this story had.

Score: 3

How Come Nobody Told Me About R.L. Stine Before?

I have a litte confession: I've never read a "teenage horror genre" book before. Nope. Not one, in all my 58 years. I have no idea why, because they're bloody good! Everybody at work seemed to know about R.L. Stine, except me. I must've had a deprived childhood - stuck with just Stephen King and James Herbert to keep me awake at night. I STILL wouldn't know about him if I hadn't stumbled across a video promo for the movie "Goosebumps".

Anyhoo - why did I choose "Switched" to pop my "young adult horror genre" cherry? Hmm. Not sure. But look: if you happen to be going away camping in a deep dark forest, and you want something to read to your friends while you sit around the campfire, toasting your marshmallows, THIS IS IT. There's no way they'll fall asleep in their tents afterwards. Each little forest noise will make them soil their sleeping bags folks.

Okay, so it's a story about the old body switcheroo thing. You know - where you jump into someone else's body. Not very original I know, but the author has given it a new twist. I couldn't guess the ending, and it was such fun to keep reading to find out what happens. It's written in a relaxed, easy-to-read style with a slick technique, resulting no doubt, from the experience of having written many, many books.

It's a short, sharp and to-the-point book that I'm sure most teenagers (or oldies who are young at heart) would enjoy. It won't be my last read of this author either. A curse upon you Jovial Bob Stine for keeping me up so late at night....and making it a scary proposition to get up to pee while it's still dark. (Just joking - no curses intended.)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Best Friends Nicole and Lucy decide to switch bodies when Nicole is having a rough day. They switch and Nicole, who’s in Lucy’s body, discovered that Lucy has done horrible things before they switched. Nicole is a very interesting character and I finished this book in less than an hour because older RL Stine books have an edge to them.

"That will be just perfect - won't it, Lucy?"
"That will be just perfect."
"Don't you agree?"

Holy fuck, what did I just read? :D I can see why this is Stine's favourite Fear Street book - it's filled with twists and turns and the plot is constantly moving. Even though a Fear Street book is yet to top New Year's Party, I think Switched definitely goes in my top 4, as well as Party Summer and the first Cheerleaders book. I might have grown up with Goosebumps, but Fear Street is so much superior and I will read every single one - one day :D

I thought the characters were actually very well-crafted - I know Stine usually focuses more on plot rather than character in his novels, but Nicole really felt real with her struggles and desires. I kept thinking Lucy was a big time bitch, but I DID NOT see that twist coming. Maybe I should have but I didn't. It reminded me of the film THE UNINVITED and that is part of the reason why I liked it so much.

The last 2 pages made me go wtf. I genuinely thought Nicole was recovered until she said that Lucy visits her regularly. "And you and I will graduate together." Jesus fuck I cannot.

This book was a clusterfuck in the best possible way. Sadly, no one writes books like this anymore. Fear Street does have its flaws don't get me wrong, but I just think it's more entertaining and engaging than some books these days, which spend 200+pages building a single scene or character.

Just my opinion :D

Happy reading :)

This is a story about the "Changing Wall". Nicole is a senior in high school and everything is going wrong for her. Her boyfriend wants to break up, she is one late assignment away from flunking out of high school, and her parents are a real pain. Her best friend Lucy has this spur-of-the-moment idea to take a trip to the woods at the end of Fear Street behind the Fear mansion to go to this decrepit 100-year old stone wall that will allow them to switch bodies. Insert urban legend based on indigenous people here. There is no cabin even though one is referred to on the blurb on the back cover of the book. Once switched, the girls separate and Nicole keeps coming across gruesome scenes. The culprit must be Lucy because she's nowhere to be found. Some things aren't explained...like why does the action in the book start on a Friday and the next day is a school day when it should be Saturday....what is the timeline for this book (don't want to give a spoiler here)...why is Nicole's house constantly dark and empty...Anyway, you start to get a feel of what is really going on with some breadcrumbs the author drops. It ends up being an unreliable narrator trope. I enjoyed the fast pacing of the book and the trip down memory lane of reading about teenagers in the nineties pre-cellphones.

Another book in the original Fear Street series that is considered to be one of Stine's favorite works. Nicole is unhappy with her life, so her best friend Lucy decides to let them switch lives. But by switching bodies, does Nicole realize her friend has far more sinister intent. After realizing the crime Lucy committed, Nicole vows to find her and switch bodies back before she is the who to be framed, but if only she realized her friend had mysteriously vanished into thin air.

I will say, this book went more than what I expected it to be, and I could see why Stine is proud of this one. The twist is one most would not have expected, especially if they had already read previous books too. Usually, I keep away from the supernatural-driven books in Fear Street, as the spin-offs do them better, but this one was a real treat to read.

3.5 This is R L stines favorite book with silent night and I can’t see how. The plot was convoluted and nothing made sense. I knew what was going on wayyy early too. The ending was lazy and it was just a way to make a twist ending and also make it to where literally NOTHING HAPPENED. It’s all a big schizophrenic episode literally. There are SOOO many better books stine could’ve liked more like Halloween party, the prom queen, trapped, the wrong number, the secret bedroom. Just to name a few! Genuinely disappointed since I read it because it was stines favorite and was expecting wayyy more. Literally a pointless story sadly. The only reason it isn’t lower is because the story really kept me interested and the pages turning but the ending unraveled everything and those kind of books are such a bummer.

Switched is one of the top tier fear street books!! I’ve read this one so many times and never get tired of it. We follow Nicole and Lucy who both decide to switch places on the changing wall in the middle of fear street woods. Nicole is having a crummy life and her not pretty but cute friend Lucy is all like let’s go to this wall my grandpa told me about where you can switch bodies. He told me in the past people forced people to switch to avoid their crimes and get away. Hmmm some foreshadowing. lol. But Nicole is all like okay and then they switch. And no spoilers but Nicole is fucked by everything that “happens” to her as Lucy after they switch. This one is crazy but in a good way. And spoilers it doesn’t have a happy ending. I can’t recommend this one enough.

Nicole’s life isn’t going so well. Her boyfriend dumped her and she has to spend her entire weekend writing a paper for biology class. So when her best friend Lucy offers her the opportunity to magically swap bodies, she quickly accepts. But she soon realizes she’s agreed to change places - with a murderer!

Hey, who needs a detailed explanation on how it was possible to swap minds by jumping off a wall? With nonstop freakiness and multiple twists, this might be one of the most fun, and best books in the series!

This was a nostalgic reread for me as this is one of the first books I ever remember getting from family. The fact I was reading it as an adult did, however, shine through on some of the content of this one. If you want to see the positive and excellent potential that FEAR STREET has for crazy bananas and bonkers twists and plot points, SWITCHED is the one to read. It's definitely up there with the best of all time. Modern thrillers use the same tropes and twists that this one does. It's impressive.

This book had me on a ride! I didn’t know where it was going, it seemed all over the place and I was confused most of the time. But despite all that the story was very predictable; I already knew how it was going to end. I did end up feeling sorry for the main character by the end of the story.
