Fear Street -- Where Your Worst Nightmares Live... It's Cindy's birthday, and her friends are throwing her a surprise party on Fire Island. It's a private party -- no parents, no cops...in fact, no one around for miles. Except there's a madman loose on the island. A murderer who quietly crashes the party. I think I had read this a real long time ago as it seemed kind of familiar, but if I did read it then I enjoyed it for the second time around.
It is Cindy's birthday and her friends want to give her a night to remember so they literally kidnap her so that they can all have a good time without parents or chaperones. They all decide to go to Fire Island and have the party there. When they get there they find out there is an escaped prisoner that is running loose and they all decide to take precautions.
I read this in one sitting as there is quite a bit of mystery along with some twists to the story which I found to be pleasantly surprised. Giving it three stars for keeping me entertained!
I've always had a soft spot for a killer lurking in the woods surrounding a cabin where people are staying and they get picked off one by one. I blame the 90s. This is one of my favorites from a kid so I'm pleased to find out I still love it as an adult.
I'm sorry but I'm going to have to give this one a big fat NO
These characters, they were so awful!
OKAY so the issues I had with this book
1) Because Cindy is blonde and blue eyed all the guys lover her, more so than Hannah who is a redhead. Are you effing kidding me? I am a redhead, and I don't feel like guys choose blonde & blue eyes over me. Can we stop assuming every blonde hair blue eyed chick is always going to beat out everybody else? I don't like blonde dudes, some dudes don't like blonde chicks. Get over it already.
2) Gretchen was overdramatic. She thought because Jackson was TEASING her, he was actually threatening her and he was OH so creepy because he was always looking at her. MAYBE he just likes you? Usually people with crushes LOOK AT YOU.
3) Gil was a class A ass. So Cindy was dating Gil, and than her parents found out. She was forced to dump him, so of course he starts dating her best friend Hannah. Because that makes sense right? He continues to flirt HARDCORE, like very sexual, very, very inappropriately with Cindy right in front of Hannah. It was disgusting. He's eye fucking Cindy in front of his effin girlfriend.
Than later he yells at Hannah for crying when someone dies and than
I wanted someone to stab him so badly.
Now for the who-dun-it that happens in all of these books, this one tricked me.
Of course the ending was a bit bizarre, I guess I could see it happening but it was pretty convenient. Overall with these horrible characters, I didn't enjoy it, at all. This was a typical Stine storyline with many twists and turns and a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter. It is not very well written but I couldn’t stop reading despite this because he does draw you in trying to work out what has happened before it is revealed. I would perhaps recommend it to slightly younger readers who do not expect so much from a book but will enjoy a loose horror storyline that keeps you guessing.
Being that this was my first proper Fear Street read, I was pleasantly surprised. This was honestly pretty fun, and very quick, I basically flew through it, and I was a little shocked when the killer was revealed. I was definitely inspired to pick up some books from this series after my watch of the Netflix Fear Street trilogy, and I'm happy I did, can't wait to pick up another one.
Very good and very sad. Sad that the birthday girl died. Why would you kill someone if they kept on teasing you? Sad that Patrick never found out Cindy liked him. Hope Patrick gets the help he needs. Also hope everyone gets on with their lives.

This was a good one! A group of kids are headed back to Fear Island for a birthday surprise. A surprise that ends in murder.
All-Night Party was fast-paced and had a lot of jumpy moments. As it’s Fear Street, there wasn’t much character development, but I thought it was a fun and clever story.
Unbelievable horror is sweeping you off your feet. You hold onto the book tight, any noise around you will make you jump. Yep, that's right, R.L. Stine's way of writing sends chills up and down his readers back, making them jump at every little noise. All-Night Party isn't the party you'd want to be at. Murderer occurs, and that is just what sends the chills up and down your spine. A girl has everything she wants, everything she needs, and so concieted. That led to her death. Poor Cindy. The horror that R.L. Stine puts you through is undescribable, he makes you scared like you never were before. You're scared out of you're mind, you wish you have never picked this book up in the beginning. You wish this, but your hands are glued to the book, flipping each page, not wanting to put the book down until you're done. Still don't believe me? Pick up a copy now! Nothing will eat you, you just won't put the book down and you want to read more and more books from R.L. Stine. Go pick up a book now!
It was Cindy's birthday and she thought everyone forgot about it. She also thought her day couldn't get any worse, but she gets kidnapped. Cindy then finds out it was a suprise and it turned out to be her friends who kidnapped her. They brought her to Fire Island to party all night where there would be nobody around. But somebody gets killed that night and everybody is scared...
Another one set on Fear Island, but this time there are cabins on it. Never read this one before either but pretty suspenseful. I couldn't figure out who did it until the end. The ending was a bit underwhelming but still fairly good.
I read this a long time ago in middle school right before I left the eighth grade when it came out and got added to our makeshift library and not the official one.
I can see why I didn't remember it and why it got donated to the library...it's boring.
Giving it one star would just be too mean. The cover and the back of the book make it look like we are going to have a decent story.
Fear Island, an all-night birthday party with a bunch of teens. Girlfriends and boyfriends who are in love, couples getting together, some love triangles maybe and gossip?
A mad man killer on the loose and it turns into murder?
Sounds normal for a Fear Street book to me and it starts out promising.
Gretchen Davies is new to Shadyside but she has made some friends and gotten the attention of a few boys. She finds herself a part of the gang and they plan to kidnap Cindy from her house and take her to Fear Island...for a birthday prank and then to celebrate with an all-night party!
Um...didn't Jawbreaker start this way?
Goes a little bit better even if Patrick pulls out a gun. It's meant for protection.
See his dad is a cop and he told Patrick that there was an escaped killer on the loose...one who murdered three teenage girls. Patrick wasn't supposed to tell but he spilled the beans when getting confronted with "WTF you have a gun for?!"
Majority wins when the birthday girl still wants her party and they row out to Fear Island.
They arrive and Gretchen isn't too happy when her boyfriend, soon to be ex, Marco shows up uninvited to the bash. It's just part of the drama.
Even the back and forth of this is just like watching some early CW drama. Hannah is with Gil who use to go with Cindy. Cindy and Gil still flirt like crazy and Hannah is not happy. Marco is just too much of a loose cannon for Gretchen to deal with and she wants to dump him. Patrick is just a goofball who stuffs his face with hot dogs and Jackson just seems to be a creepy guy always staring at Gretchen.
Not to mention Cindy is a brat. She's a rich girl and doesn't seem at all impressed with any of the gifts her friends got her for her birthday. Earrings, perfume, concert tickets and...slasher movies?
Okay that last one is depending on your taste but the first three I mean come on even tickets to a concert...that you didn't have to pay for!?
The triangle between Gil, Cindy and Hannah as well as two intense boys in Marco and Jackson on top of a crazed killer on the loose make Gretchen want some air for just a minute. Soon the whole group has kind of split off but Gretchen hears a fight between Cindy and one of the boys...possibly Jackson?
All we soon know is that Cindy is found dead in the kitchen on the floor in a puddle of blood and spilled flour. Happy Birthday indeed but yeah thanks book, you kind of spoiled that on the back for us anyway...
Who killed Cindy? The mad man on the loose or one of the teens?
Yep...that's really it.
Won't spoil it but you can pretty much come to your own conclusion whether it is wrong or right.
None of the characters are very likeable. Cindy especially. I'm sure if we let the party drag on enough to get to the scene where her friends present her with the cake that Gretchen and Hannah slaved on making...she would have found something wrong with it.
Chocolate icing!?...Heavens no, I'm trying to lose weight!
Also there is so much you can do with teens stuck on an island, waffling between being jerks or whiny crybabies. We get to our reveal and our ending in one rushed breath with a quippy last line that doesn't really have any well...zing to it.
This was toward the ending run of Fear Street and yeah I can kind of see why. If you haven't read it and are curious, it isn't too bad for a quick afternoon read. Looking to try and find the whole series from a collecting standpoint...would probably be the only reason to have All-Night Party basically.
So after reviewing that trilogy, I wanted to go back to the present of the day's and fit in a Fear Street read. I did this one purely because my buddy this guy ( https://twitter.com/fear_tweet ) is covering it soon, so figured why not. I may review this one, but isn't super high on my interest list, but it's not on my "Nah, I'll skip it" pile either.
It goes up on the upper Decent side, the pile of books that are close, but fall victim to some flaws, usually the standard ones. I like the setup here, as Gretchen and her friends have setup a surprise birthday party for their friend Cindy on Fear Island. After The Overnight, you'd think people would stay away from there. Soon Cindy is killed and they figure one of them possibly did it.
Got that classic isolation setup, along with the change one of is the killer. It starts pretty quickly and mostly flows fine, and was decently engaging and suspenseful for most of it. The most interesting aspect is that it turns out Cindy was kind of awful, so basically everyone has a motivation. The best friend Hannah especially has a complicated history with her that was interesting.
The reveal of the killer was interesting. They go to lengths that are either clever or cheap, I'd say a bit of both lol. It's a case where it's sort of obvious but Stine tries to be a bit more interesting with it, and their motivation is okay but involves some convoluted stuff that could have been done better. The climax is on the rushed end as I've come to expect by now, but it's not the worst I guess?
The fake outs are especially annoying in this one, even by the end they're still doing them, yeesh. The character stuff in here is interesting but it could bubbled up into something a bit bigger by the end. This is a case of someone unique elements becoming something a bit standard by the end.
Also, this is one of those ones where all the men are awful in some way, including the one Gretchen kinda sorta hooks up with. It's not as bad as something like Lights Out, as I said kinda sorta for a reason but it's still blah.
Overall, has enough for me to kinda like it, but it's in the "could have been better" pile. BODY COUNT: 1
REDHEAD WATCH: Hannah
REPRINT WATCH: Weirdly, there were no pop culture things that needed updating so I didn’t bother checking this one.
CLASS WATCH: This is a new one I'm adding as it pops up a lot in these. In this case, Cindy is in a well off family, and she competed with Hannah for a scholarship. Gretchen's family is rich enough to get her into any college, while Hannah is not so well off and kinda of needed to win it, but Gretchen won it, and only tries to get it when Hannah did, she's always doing stuff like that to Hannah. It's an interesting bit I liked.
TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS: Another to add because it's so common. Gretchen/Marco (a guy she is trying to break up with because he's dangerous) and then later her and that other guy I mentioned, plus some involving Cindy.
Three friends plan a surprise birthday party for Cindy. On Fear Island 😑 It’s such a bad idea! Nothing good ever happens there! And this time it turns out there’s an escaped prisoner/killer on the loose there. All the kids are freaking out cause one of them gets murdered, now they’re wondering who the murderer will kill next 😬
I really liked the premise of this book. The mystery was okay, but the first person I suspected turned out to be the killer, so there’s that 🤷♀️
All that being said, I was very meh about the characters. Gretchen’s boyfriend Marco was the worst! I did not like him. And then when she broke up with him he was giving her a hard time and then she felt bad about it? Like it was somehow wrong of her to NOT like him. No girl, it’s fine if you don’t like him. Hot bod or not, you’re entitled to your own feelings. Oh, and then this Jackson character apparently liked Gretchen too but he was being a total creeper! WTF dude! Yeah, these guys? Not great.
Anyway, it wasn’t that bad. The set up for the killer had a double twist that was pretty cool. Plus I really liked the setting in a deserted cabin on Fear Island.
The Fear Street connection: Surprise, all-night part on Fear Island? Great idea! *insert eyeroll here*
This book is called "fear street all night party'' by ''R.L.stine .Its about a birthday girl name cindy and her friends patrick, hannah, gretchen, marco, gil.and jackson. they plan to kidnap cindy to take her to fear island to have an all night birthday party so when they do patrick had a gun his friends got scared they asked him why does he have it he said that there is a killer that killed three teenage girls. so they started the party and the started dancing when the stopped they went outside except for patrick cindy and jackson. when gretchen was collecting wood for the fire she heard arguing in the kitchen with cindy and patrick she thought that was jackson's voice. so when she finished collecting wood she went inside with marco to put the wood so the fire would get stronger. then when they went back inside everything was quiet so she thought they were all outside but only jackson gil and hannah were out there.so she decided to go cut the cake and and get everything ready before they come back. when she opened the kitchen door she noticed flour all over the floor and there were dark red stains so she wondered what it is when she stepped inside she saw cindy dead on the floor all over the flour then she stepped out and marco asked her what happened she told him cindy is dead then patrick came down with blood all over his shirt.so she started backing away from him and she told him that he killed cind he said he didn't then she told marco and her other friends she is dead in the kitchen and she stayed outside the kitchen while they all went there except for her and patrick.so patrick told her it was the killed that killed the three girls.but at the end they found all the evidence that patrick killed her so he took out his gun and pointed it at all his friends. then the police came no one had called the police so they were all surprised then patrick turned the gun towards the two cops then gretchen started yelling telling him not to shoot so she jumped on him and knocked him to the floor and kept slamming his hands on the floor until the gun was loose then the cops took the gun away and handcuffed him so they asked him why did they come he told them that patrick stole the gun away from his dad so the came to get it so gretchen told them everything that happened and the cops took them back home

All-Nigh Party, by R.L. Stine, published in 1997. This is the 43rd novel in Stine's classic 90s horror series, Fear Street. I have to say, it's one of the best Stine novels I've read.
This book has something that I love in murder mysteries, and that's the isolated mystery trope. A group of friends surprise Cindy for her birthday and take her to a cabin out on Fear Island for an all-night party. When one of the party-goers ends up dead, an insane killer is reported to have escaped an asylum nearby, and a rain storm is fast approaching, the remaining party-goers are in fear of their lives. But is the killer really outside, or is the killer already in the cabin?
I love isolated mysteries, where the characters are trapped, rainstorms, and insane people on the loose. This book felt like a homage to Agatha Christie or The Cat and the Canary play. It read like a play. The small cast of characters, all have motives for killing the teen who ends up dead, etc. It was just a fast, teenage Christie storyline that worked really well.
Stine's ability lies in quick chapters and not too much insight. It's like you're reading the script to a movie but in novel form. What characters say and do is what Stine does best. Making it all seem very cinematic. Also, Stine weaves the cliffhangers and suspense really well. There are no stupid conclusions to them as you read on. This book felt realistic in many ways and wasn't based on Stine's signature humor and hijinx he's known for incorporating into his stories, giving it a more suspenseful feel. My rating - 5/5
I wanted to start the new reading year with a book that would set up a great reading year. I thought what better than a Fear Street book since it was this series that started my love of reading as a child.
We follow a group of friends who are having a birthday party at an isolated cabin where no one is around.
Cindy’s friends surprise her with a birthday party and while on the journey one of her friends, Patrick reveals that there is an escaped killer on the loose who targets girls.
During the party, one of them is found dead.
~ it’s fast-paced. ~ the characters were getting on my nerves half of the time because of their actions or because they weren’t using their brains. ~ it was repetitive and predictive at times ~ Gretchen frustrated me throughout the story. ~ the twist at the end made up for the book.
I know it’s YA but I still was getting annoyed and yelling at the characters 😂
Similar to a few Fear Street books we have a contingent of teenagers stranded on an island or other vacation spot and one “among them” is a killer of course. We have a spoiled rich bratty girl, the sad crying girl, aggressive brooding guy, violent biker guy, happy joking guy, man hoe guy, and finally the only regular person female protagonist Gretchen.
I will say it is liberating that Gretchen wanted to break up with her violent biker boyfriend that’s more than most girls in these books (and in real life) can say for themselves. Her boyfriend really was a nutcase. When she told him it was over he came at her with a pocket knife then stabbed the tree behind her last minute. Bleh.
Favorite quote from the book: “Who wanted a boyfriend who was constantly coming onto his ex-girlfriend?” Right? Finally someone with common sense. Man hoe guy for the loss. Once spoiled rich girl is killed it’s like Murder Mystery of whodonit? This one was actually hard to figure out. None of the usual suspects were it. Instead turns out happy joking guy framed himself and actually did kill her and for a dumb reason too.
Overall decent enough. Somewhat surprising. Not too original. Redhead moment: Hannah (sad crying girl).
These books are enjoyable as adults if you picture them cast like Wet Hot American Summer and played like Not Another Teen Movie. The crazy cliffhangers are probably why I and a generation of other readers kept reading them back in the day, even if they are stupid and annoying.
Cliffhanger Example 1) One girl complains to another about a third and says, “I could just KILL her.” The other girl takes this as seriously as possible. “You don’t mean that! Right?!” Dunh dunh dunh….!
Cliffhanger Example 2) One character stabs another in the chest! “Oh my God, he’s raising the knife and he’s bringing it down right into the center of my chest! Ouchie!” But, lo and behold, the first sentence of the next chapter reveals the knife she thought plunged into her chest actually plunged into a nearby tree. What?!
