Bookshelf Genre: Biography

Bookshelf Mentor Writing Traits (explain one or two content integration ideas):

Organization - This book is structured in a very organized way. Splitting Tubman’s story into a number of chapters that highlights the key stages of her life. Within each chapter, there are subtitles that help the reader flow through each section in a logical manner.

Conventions - This book is a great example of a mechanical correct piece. The writer uses punctuation valuably, indents each paragraph, and applies correct grammar and language throughout the story. The strength of these conventions allows the reader to flow through the book efficiently.

This book is a great example of how a student can create a biography of someone’s life. The book is split into clear sections that provide a timeline of her life, and the mechanical correctness of the piece is something students are able to model.

PERSONAL REACTION
I loved this book. It was so interesting and full of awesome information about Harriet Tubman that I did not know before I read this book. I loved the quotes they had from her and all of the pictures that were in the book to help visualize what things looked like back in her time. I think this is a great book for children to read and I think they will learn a lot from it.

PURPOSE/USE IN CLASSROOM
-this would be a great book to read aloud during a social studies unit
-this would be a great book when doing a unit on slavery or the civil war because some of the events talked about in her biography relate to both
-I think this is a fantastic independent read for students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade because some of the stuff that is talked about (how slaves were treated) will be easier for students that age to understand and also there is a lot of information in this book and I think it would be overwhelming for younger students
-this book has a table of contents, a glossary, an index, and a timeline that does an awesome job of laying out what happened in Harriets life and when
-this is also set up in chapter form which is really helpful for identifying different times/parts of her life
-the captions help explain what the pictures are of and their significance
-this book provides a lot of great quotes from Harriet Tubman and I think that students will find them interesting because they are hearing what she is saying even though she was around many years ago

Overall, I love this book and I would definitely use it in my classroom. When I was in 5th grade I wrote my hero report on Harriet Tubman and this book would have been an awesome resource at the time because it was age appropriate and full of information. I think this book does a great job on telling her life story and I think that many students would enjoy reading about Harriet Tubman.

Wonderful synopsis of Harriet "General" Tubman Davis's life, with U.S. Confederacy maps, timeline, glossary. Early to middle grades will appreciate the rich vocabulary and factual base. Well documented account of the amazing life of a slave who bravely freed herself & returned for her family, continuing the Underground Railroad to freedom for many years before and during the Civil War.
