Colette Peters's one-of-a-kind wedding cakes -- for which she charges hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars -- have made her America's most sought-after culinary artist. Now, with this dazzling cookbook, brides-and-grooms-to-be can bake their own Colette's wedding cake -- or commission a professional baker to follow one of Colette's designs.
Illustrated throughout with eye-popping color photographs, step-by-step drawings, and templates, Colette's Wedding Cakes showcases more than thirty of the author's most amazing wedding creations, organized by season -- a love-in-bloom cake, an Edwardian cake, a chocolate fantasia cake, an art deco cake, a coral reef cake, and many others.
The book festures several lovely cakes at each skill level. It's gorgeous and practical. Although I'm sure that many, many books on this topic have come put since then, this is sure to remain a classic, both for design and practicality of tips and recipes. This is the first book I tried when fancy cakes, and Collette, first started being featured in magazines and on talk shows. I made the purse cake for my sister-in-law back in 1998 or 1999; it wasn't perfect but it was very pretty and fun. And the chocolate cake was so good that my uncle told me that he never eats cake but he finished his piece this time. The secret is coffee, adds a punch of flavor and moistness. it's the only cake I've baked that's enough better than the boxes to make it worth the effort.
Seeking inspiration for that really, really special cake? Got either good artistic or icing skills? Then this is the book for you. Although the cakes are divided into several skill levels, the easiest of them is extremely difficult for a beginner, unless you have a fair amount of artistic talent then you can muddle through. The book makes a fantastic gift for someone who really likes cake decorating and would enjoy learning new techniques and being inspired with creative ideas.
