Slavery wasn't all singin' and dancin' and grinning. Explicit details of the brutality and inhumanity of that "peculiar institution". Onstott kills forever the notion of the benevolent master caring for his slaves like children. I read this after Mandingo and was probably expected the violence of Onstott's stories. Not a happy story.
