Well, if you do know, then so much the better. Because I have already told you till I'm blue in the face. I'm not hand-some, I'm not smart, I'm not witty, I'm not dashing. I don't know how to offer my girl, my sweetheart, my beloved, my wife, those wild ecstatic declarations of love that would light the stars in her eyes, and raise her pulse to a hundred and forty. No. But I'll give her a couple of hundred thousand instead, which in a couple of years I shall turn into a million for her, for my beloved. A million, my sweet. That will be my declaration of love. And that is why I am going to the Countess's soirée tonight, if Madame really wishes to know, and not because I am interested in listening to that American baritone.
