The Perfect Storm

Rate this book
Caught in mountainous seas and hurricane-force winds are the swordfishing fleet from Gloucester, Massachusetts and a sailing yacht. The rescue services cannot locate the swordfishing boat "Andrea Gail", and Captain Billy Tyne and his crew of six are feared lost. This is a simplified adaptation of Sebastian Junger's best-seller about a terrible storm that occurred in 1991. It is an intermediate-level story in a series of ELT readers comprising a wide range of titles - some original and some simplified - from modern and classic novels, and designed to appeal to all age groups, tastes and cultures. The books are divided into five levels: Starter Level, with about 300 basic words; Beginner Level (600 basic words); Elementary Level (1100); Intermediate Level (1600); and Upper Level (2200). Some of the titles are also available on cassette.

Brilliant telling of the true story of the disappearance of the Andrea Gail. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. I have seen the film adaptation, which I enjoyed, but this book is absolutely riveting. I thought it would be a bit of a slow burn but I became engrossed immediately. I was also really interested in the superstitions and beliefs of fishermen and sea people. A genuinely fascinating read.

I always have trouble understanding about a ship or anything at sea, but in this version there are lots of explanations and illustrations so it was easy for me to read. This is a true story but I didn't really know it. I realized that fishing can be very dangerous even for experienced fishermen. It is so difficult and dangerous to rescue people.

the perfect storm was one of te best stories i ever read because i really like sea stories. i really liked when they were stuggled in sea and started to go in the storm!! but i became sad when the sailors died and left their families.

A chilling story of nature, and a really good description of nautical weather and technology.
